The Rey Fenix and AEW saga continues.

Fenix posted a number of tweets seemingly aimed at AEW without naming them directly, claiming that he was treated inhumanely and denied a doctor when he needed one. Fightful asked for comment or statement from AEW both via message and in person at Monday's on-sale ticketing event. We were told that they weren't going to comment on the matter, with an additional source indicating that they couldn't comment on medical claims regardless.

Fightful has spoken to numerous sources in AEW who were surprised by Fenix's tweets, even though the two sides are on the outs. One source admitted there have long been communication issues, but hadn't heard anything that would be construed as "inhumane," and hadn't spoken to Fenix about it. They had heard that Fenix took issue with a doctor who hadn't cleared him at one point, though context on that wasn't exactly complete. We're still trying to find out any additional details on issues Fenix took with AEW. We did reach out to both he and AEW, and haven't heard back.

Another AEW source who claimed to be familiar with the matter said that the claims were untrue and that they thought word of AEW "not being upset by the fake WWE news" was someone trying to "babyface themselves" in the situation, as AEW had been upset about word that Lucha Bros had talks with WWE with plenty of time remaining on their deals.

Penta is now a free agent and able to work anywhere he pleases, while Rey Fenix's deal had injury time added to it that takes him well into 2025. It should be reiterated that WWE has never commented in any capacity on the duo, but the widespread belief was that they were planned for a WWE run, bypassing NXT. Contrary to recent reports, AEW did learn about those alleged talks back in the summer around the time Fightful reported about them, and were obviously not happy. They would later find out more information on the matter.

Penta is in heavy demand outside of AEW, we're told. Fenix, despite being under AEW contract, is also obviously heavy in demand. We've been working to find out if Fenix an AEW were in touch to approve his upcoming HOG appearance and are trying to learn more.

Penta and Fenix both were factored significantly into creative plans throughout the year. They, along with PAC were originally planned to win the AEW Trios Championships at All In before the aforementioned rumored talks with WWE took place. While Fenix was injured, PAC and Penta were also at one time planned for a deep run in the AEW World Tag Team Title tournament after Sting retired.

As of now, Fenix's status is up in the air, and there were people within AEW that indicated to Fightful last week that AEW and Tony Khan might actually give Fenix an early release on his deal. However, since then, we've heard of no update, and one of the sources that indicated that believed almost any outcome sets an unfortunate precedent.

Whole situation has gotten so messy, just let him go and move on at this point

Leo Chirichiello

feels like this is leading to Rey signing something saying he wont talk and going to WWE

MB

Sting expired?

patchyrick

Sting expired?

Collin Ingram

Just let him leave before this gets even more messy

This is a no-win situation for AEW. You don't want to set a precedent that people can not fulfill their contracts and leave but you don't want to be perceived as holding someone hostage when they want out. Overall, the next step should be management getting better at communication. These situations can be avoided.

Jose Balderas

I must’ve missed when Sting expired. We’ll miss him.

LostRhino

It's worth noting Sting Retired he did not expire haha

ItsWildBoy

Sting expired is crazy 😂

Those Khans really know to run organizations don’t they? “Sloppy Shop”

I hate this kind of stuff for one reason. The bad faith individuals have just run wild with their nonsense hypothesis. So there is nothing Fightful can report because the grifters will read this and play choose their own adventure with this news. It would be one thing if the bad faith grifters gave a damn about Fenix but they don’t. They care two things only. 1) They hate AEW for existing or 2) wrestlers or owner have called them out for nonsense opinions and manufactured rage. It would be different if these cosplay Stuart Smalley’s cared about the worker instead of trying to find ways to keep rage/hate show fresh and negative for their fans who just want to hear nothing but negativity and bashing

Adding injury time is different from a guy with 1 year left wanting out.

Thomas Rathert

Considering this company has Adam Hopkins employed, I'm surprised they have so many communication issues.

Josh Savory

Yeah, if you have a blown out knee and can't fulfill the contract and they pay for your medical bills, they are within their rights to add time. If they didn't pay the bills, that's a different story.

Forceofwilliam

I find most of what Fenix is saying is likely BS and him trying to force Tony to release him early. Nobody but Punk has brought up similar issues and Punk did only after he was fired. Until proven otherwise, I will assume Fenix is a whiny little bitch who is upset that injury time was added after he and Penta talked with WWE while under contract with AEW.

Stephen Bradley

No idea what actually happened could be wrongs on both sides However it appears to me Fenix is screaming out for an NDA deal

Roberto

My milk joined Sting today...they both expired 😟

Is there an option for a “buy out the remainder of their contract time” option from the talent? So it’s not perceived as talent being released early and/or talent being able to work their way out?

Covell Coleman JR

Gotta hold strong TK. Anyone that wants to say this is the same as the complaints against WWE are deluded. AEW cannot survive if they don't hold their talent to contractual obligations. Love watching Fenix and Penta perform but that's bullshit and the sooner TK sheds the pervasive belief that he's a pushover, the better. You can build a more empathetic wrestling business model and be hardline owner without losing goodwill.

Silvermander!

From day one, he said he wouldn't hold anyone in contract who didn't want to be, that he would NOT run AEW that way, and yet here he is. If he hadn't made such a declaration, he wouldn't be in this mess. This is a mess of TK's making, and he's the one who looks bad in all of this. He continues to state one thing and do another. He worships how VKM ran things, and that's showing up more and more in the worst possible ways.

Silvermander!

In other words, you have no clue and are talking out your bum about something you know nothing about. Never mind that TK has stated that he'd never do this, yet here we are. He made a bunch of claims from the start and has broken every single one of them. To me, from the outside, TK is the petty one, all the while trying to be VKM who he worships.

Covell Coleman JR

And that's fine. I, for one, don't need TK to be a white knight and in this case if he's going to go back on his word to create a precedent for his locker room, I wouldn't in the least bit fault him for it. There a million ways and reasons Vince was a slum lord owner. This will be a valuable lesson learned

Forceofwilliam

Was Ali talking to other companies while under contract with WWE? No? Then the situation is different and you can shut the hell up.

Silvermander!

There are obvious (from the outside looking in) that he has real and true reasons for wanting out and it appears as though TK is simply being petty and going against everything he said he wouldn't do when he got involved with AEW in the first place.

Chadman

When did he state this? I started watching in 2022.

Sean Martin

If I understand what I read correctly, Fenix isn't upset about AEW helping him find a doctor for an injury. He is mad that the current doctor he has won't clear him and that Tony Khan wouldn't find Rey a new one who would. Regardless if he was actually fully recovered or not.

Lynchman

While I have no idea what has actually happened, I have never heard of AEW abusing talent or denying medical treatment. Quite the opposite. They have left talent sitting home, which sucks, but my gut tells me Fenix is being less than honest. Inhumane treatment?? My thinks games are being played. But again, this is just me speculating.

Matt Hennessy

The way AEW have handled the Lucha Bros & Ricky Starks situation have been terrible it reminds me a lot of how WWE under Vince handled the Brodie Lee & FTR situation WWE was rightfully criticised back then AEW is rightfully been criticised now. Fenix is not the first talent to say AEW didn’t help with his medical Punk said no one in AEW talked to him for 6 months 8 he had to pay his own medical. Truthfully when it comes to the Fenix situation & Starks situation keeping these guys when they don’t wanna be there & not using them is petty & is a waste both mens prime. I think it would be in AEW best interest to let talents like Fenix Starks & Miro leave. The company is cold & creative has been very hit & miss they don’t need any more negative PR talent hoarding & not using said talent because of them wanting to go to your competitor benefits no one it’s unfair to the wrestlers & your wasting money on people your not investing in
