Yes, you read that headline right. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 features the series' best single-player campaign in over a decade. The developers, spread across multiple studios around the world, have blended the Mission Impossible films with some of our favorite video games. franchises. That anybody with a Game Pass subscription (or a free trial) can play it without breaking the bank certainly doesn't hurt either.

In the second half of the episode, the Resties talk about the top contenders for the Game Awards. And share their pro tips for catching up on games at the end of the year.

Haven’t finished listening yet but I will add myself to the data sample and say that this is the first CoD I’ve played in years, probably over a decade, and that is 100% because it cost me $15 for a month of game pass to check it out. Which also led to me playing others that interested me this year, like Still Wakes the Deep, Dungeons of Hinterburg, Another Crab’s Treasure and some other shorties while I have the time. Never even considered downloading the campaign for BO6 though

The besties is the only podcast that could ever get me to listen to an episode about call of duty

I recently started getting back into Helldivers 2. There have been a few changes but the gameplay is mostly the same. I have mixed feelings about the game. I feel very little compulsion to play for any long-term goals or incentives, because I'm not really motivated by a few paragraphs of narrative text and some (mostly same/same) stratagem changes. However, the moment to moment gameplay is just SO good that it singlehandedly makes me miss the game. The community appears to be as supportive as ever, if a little quieter and less enthusiastically than before the PSN debacle. I found myself missing Helldivers 2 gameplay while actively playing Space Marine 2. That has to say something.

The two contrasting Bowser stories had me cracking up. Good way to start my work week.

Balatro on mobile is a serious detriment to my health 🫠😵‍💫

This weekend my wife and I went out and bought a house plant. She asked me to name it, to which I promptly responded, “Christopher Thomas Plant”.

I had sort of the opposite experience, if that matters. I fell off Helldivers 2 due to a hardware crashing issue. Got that fixed, just in time for Space Marine 2 to drop, and I've been having way more fun in Space Marine 2 to the point where any urge to go back to Helldivers 2 has been completely absorbed by it.

Discussion about meditation was an awesome surprise! I listened to the podcast with the Zen teacher and am watching the Lynch video now (and played Tactical Breach Wizards in between). Thanks for bringing attention to this!

The fact this campaign was fully the work of Raven Software makes me so happy. I still am hopeful that they could be given an opportunity under the Microsoft umbrella to step away from Call Of Duty and do something either in another franchise again. These guys made some of my favorite games of all time, including Jedi Knight II and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. I really want them to get to play in other worlds again.

Me getting interested in a call of duty game was not on my 2024 bingo card, but you guys really sold me! Now I just have to figure out how to get game pass on my steam deck.

IIRC one of the Resties (maybe both) called like 2 years ago that the current gamepass model would result in major devs providing a tight single-player experience rather than bloating it out. This sounds like a perfect example

Another Crab's Treasure absolutely deserves to be part of the GotY conversation. A lot of people seem to have played the beginning, thought it was cute, and moved on, but it starts taking some pretty big swings in the back half.

Not for me, I downloaded it to stop from doomscrolling and by god it works!

I haven't done a CoD campaign for years (I got annoyed with the install process for one a few years ago where you had to install the entire like 150 gb multiplayer to play the 3 hour campaign) but this might sell me to rent this one. Also, a question for y'all: you've mentioned handheld emulator machines before, do you have any specific device recs? I've got some loooong flights coming up and I'd love to play something like that (on a budget!)

Hi, new patron here. Just want to say I am living for this content from you boys… that is all. Thank you so much for all of this.

Not them but I just picked up a secondhand Anbernic RG35xx Plus and it seems like that and the Miyoo Mini Plus are the go-to options for the vertical/game boy form factor. There are some horizontal ones and some that have analog sticks that are better for certain games and consoles, I’d recommend checking out Retro Game Corps on YouTube for good guides and reviews

Brendan

Just jumping in here to double up on retro game corps recommendation. I've just put an order on the rg cubexx. It's the same chip set as other rg**xx devices but has a form factor that appeals to me, for some reason. It's also meant to be great for pico8 as that uses a 1:1 screen ratio which I'm excited to jump into!

I had to stop what I was doing to open this app to request that Russ does way more David Lynch by way of Sesame Street on future episodes
