My heart is overcast 🖤

This episode was genius. The way this interaction, which didn't take all that much time, had me sitting on the edge of my seat, was amazing.... and that cold statement by Light at the end? Chills.

Adam and I reached very different conclusions at the end of the episode. Which side did you fall into when you watched this for the first time?

The biggest reason that she was more willing to believe that he could be part of the investigation squad was what she mentioned - she has worked with L in the past, we know that L has been solving and working unsolvable cases since adolescence / pre-adolescence, and she outright stated that Light reminded her of L. That was the thing that really helped him sell it, and also pulling on her desperation to try and be involved because she has a personal stake in it. He validated her thought process and gave her hope at a moment when she was desperate for it.

Watched this show first time like 10 years ago...I still think about that final shot with Naomi from time to time

Also, the anime aired 2006-2007, but the manga was written a few years prior to that, around 2003. So it was right around / right before Japan started really increasing the amount of security and surveillance cameras around the country, and it's not particularly noteworthy that the bus may not have had one.

I will always remember this particular episode number, because my friend and I had to put down the show for a whole month before resuming. I genuinely felt sick to my stomach. Can't wait to see you guys' reactions!

Let me put it this way for Sarah: Light is like teen Tom Riddle and can be pretty persuasive. But I was also thinking this is a little too easy for Light to get her real name when I first saw the episode

I don't think there was ever a period of change in Light. I agree that it would've been interesting to see, but I suspect that even before receiving the note, Light had already had these ideations. He didn't get corrupted by the note; he knew what he wanted and he knew what he had to do to get there from day 1.

Love these reactions so much. It really is like watching it for the first time all over again, especially this episode. How absolutely anxiety inducing it is.

Right now, the task force are thinking the following (based on evidence they have collected): - Kira needs a name and face to kill. - Kira can control the actions of those he kill before their death. - Kira can only kill with heart attacks (because he has done so exclusively thus far). - In order to kill the FBI agents, Kira must have come into contact with one of them (or be able to hack the Pentagon I guess). - They don't know WHO came into contact with which agent because Raye Penber is bad at his job and didn't report the bus incident, at least not in full details, but nevertheless they know that some 40 odd people are suspicious. Now Naomi has a special perspective that allows her to make further theory: she knows that Raye had to reveal his name on the bus and she knows that he died subsequently. It is not a leap then to suspect that, if Raye indeed was murdered by Kira, then Kira must've gotten Raye's name through the ONLY time he ever revealed himself. But the circumstances that led to Raye's mistake was rather special, it is difficult to believe that Kira was simply that lucky, so she made another theory to support her previous theory: Kira can kill with methods other than heart attacks. If both of these theories make their way to the task force, Light would indeed become highly suspicious. They would interrogate the girl who was with Light and found out the circumstances that led to the identity leak including the fact that Light initiated the date when he hadn't done so with anyone else on any other day; they would check the subway footage for everywhere Light went and may even see him in possession of the package. I don't think they would be definitively certain, but they would definitely make life harder for him. I don't know why Light considers her an existential threat, maybe he (rightly) believed that no other suspects ever made contact with any agents so if he's found out, he'd be the only remaining suspect.

Yes! I think it's really important to remember that despite Naomi being an FBI agent, there's a reason people recuse themselves or are exempted due to personal involvement. Like you said she's desperate, grieving, up to her eyes in personal stakes, and things that outsiders would see as too good to be true she sees as vindication. It sucks because she was doing so well investigating :( but if she got away this show would have been over real quick LOL

In Naomi’s defense, I think it’s important to remember how easily Raye dismissed her ideas even though she was formerly a fbi agent too. If that’s the kind of cavalier attitude she was used to in her day to day, especially in this time period when women weren’t given the most respect in the work force (or in general lbr), then I don’t think it’s too much of a reach that she’d be susceptible to Light in her time of desperation and grief. The police receptionist had already established that Light had worked on cases with them before so he has connections/some authority and credibility, but more importantly he was the first open ear willing to hear her new and radical idea out. He showed interest, asked questions and was engaged, even validating and encouraging her to join their task force saying that they “needed” her and it was fate. He dangled the bait SO well and then immediately backtracked just enough with the “oh but you have your whole life ahead of you” line, which is really just emotional manipulation at its finest to make HER feel like she had to double down and be like no. This is what I want. Let me prove it to you, let me join you, here take my ID. And then yeah 😭 I totally still believe that she was a top agent, it’s just that this isn’t a normal case, and above all she isn’t an uninvolved investigator here. Like this is her fiancé who she loves and believes to have been recently killed by Kira. Under normal circumstances she wouldn’t have been allowed to join an investigation anyway even if she WAS still an agent since she’s too close to the case. And now she’s not even in the US but in Japan, where the fbi have pulled out and she has no authority or connections to speak of except to L, who no one can contact, no access to ANY resources except the one before her in Light. She desperately needed that connection to him to even have a hope of somehow reaching L, and even then she still stuck to her guns with him until the very end. She was amazing

About not seeing much of Light’s turmoil - I think the main reason for this is that he rationalizes so quickly. We know how black and white or “childish” his sense of justice is, so once he tested the death note out in ep 1 and killed those two people, he had to quickly self justify in order to maintain his self image of him being “good” and “one of japans best and brightest”. He did question briefly if he had the right to weigh human lives like that, but he had already killed those people. They’re dead and nothing will change that, and I don’t think his psyche handled the emotional weight of that well so he buried that and turned to cold hard “logic” instead. Which was basically just that whole inner monologue of him telling himself that he’d always thought the world needed to be changed, he just didn’t have the means before but now he DOES so of course he should do something about it because if not me then who could POSSIBLY be more capable? No one (nvm about if he should or not because oops too late already tested the death note!). We see him rationalize himself into his god complex in ep 1, but we fully see him buy into it in ep 2 when he gets provoked by the fake L calling him Evil. That’s when it truly turns into I’m so great actually I am GOD therefore nothing I do is wrong, it’s everyone who’s trying to stop me who’s wrong. And now we’re just seeing how far the extent of that belief will reach (quite far). I’m not sure you can even call it a slippery slope anymore lol, he’s fully convinced himself that he’s doing this for the good of humanity which we see in that conversation with ryuk about their two worlds, so by that logic anyone who’s opposing his “goodness” automatically becomes the “bad guys.” Doesn’t matter if they’re police, fbi, whatever. If Light was a guy who operated on emotions or was swayed by them to begin with then I think we would’ve seen more turmoil, but I think it’s purposeful we didn’t because he’s just not that dude. If he had doubts before, they were dead and buried QUICK in favor of his mind and his mission. That’s what the story is trying to tell us.

Same thoughts on this, but having difficulty to express myself in english BAHAHA! love your comment!

Sarah

I was holding onto hope that she was alive... I couldn't imagine her losing to Light

Sarah

Ah yes.... Harry Potter is my love language. Great comparison!

I don't want to spoil anything so let's just say that we'll discuss this topic again in the future.

I’m not sure if you know this, but check out this place called Curiosa: https://www.instagram.com/curiosasociety?igsh=MThvYXpzOWhxcXduOQ== next time when you’re in Toronto. Their deco is top notch and they sell a lot of Harry Potter related merch. I feel like I was transported to the Wizarding World the moment I entered their shop🧙‍♀️
