The last two episodes, in all honesty, have just not been doing it for me. The whole "Light putting himself in jail" thing from last episode was so unbelievable for me, and now this episode was super slow (aside from the care scene 😱).

Did anyone else have this experience on their first watch, or is it just me?

I believe it was Light himself who mentioned in episode 1 or 2 that the Death Note has a way of tempting people to use it at least once. You also see him panicking and breaking down in the rain after killing his first two victims, only to suddenly shift his behavior and convince himself that his actions are justified. I don’t think Light was an average teenager even before getting the Death Note, but it’s clear that it influenced him in some way.

I think it's because so much happens so quickly at the start of the anime - and that's what you're accustom to. So the sudden shift in pacing is hard to adjust to. The anime IS a slow burn, story driven anime that very much takes its time to get from point A to B. But when the point Bs do come around, it's very good at doing them. And about Light being how he is without the Death Note. That IS the kind of person he is/was. He wants to help, he's kind and actually caring. But as others stated. Power really does change people for the worse.

Thank you!!! I hear so many people say Light was an average/normal teenager before he got the death note. Ummm obviously he wasn’t! They try to make it seem like it was the Death Note that made him act that way 100%. But what average teenager gets a high off of killing people and playing god. Some people even say “if that was you in that position you would do the same” umm no i wouldn’t….. like why are people trying to justify his behavior. Playing “killer” no matter what way it’s in is never a good thing.

André Mendes

Light is not faking 😁 he was a nice guy before the death note

jo

On Light’s character change and if he was manipulative from the start…I don’t think so. When he first met Misa, he was very direct about not reciprocating feelings and that he was going to use her. So imo I do feel that his attitude is in character, and I agree with Adam that the power of the death note corrupts people…or at least magnifies their more predatory traits.

jo

Also Sarah, I wonder if part of your lull is because you really genuinely dislike Light haha

jo

The second half of the episode is perhaps slow in setting up what will happen next, but for me the first half of the episode was intense and exhilerating

Danny

Sarah just has a light bias. My advice would be to not question too deeply and see where the story goes. Adam's mentality about the show is pretty similar to mine

Ronald Bohne

Sarah, its ok. You just really really despise Light. But yeah, this is not the same person with the death note (at least mentally). They say it twice that it has been relinquished and sound effects and visual confirmation was shown with Lights eyes changing (this is not a spoiler, just an explanation of how anime generally handles it). But in a cat and mouse type of show, being interested in the good guy and bad guy is kind of the point. Now if you just hate one side, I can completely see why this type of show might grind you sometimes. All I can say is death note really isnt written with the intent of normal shows where you root for the good guy main character, etc. Different experience, but I enjoy your reactions all the same. :)

riddle

I would think of the current Light that we see in this episode as the same person he was when he was in high school before he came across the death note. Before he got the death note, he did have a genuine interest in becoming a detective and had a strong sense of morality in the same way as his father does. When the receptionist at the headquarters told Light that he remembers him from when he helped the police solve a case (in front of Naomi), that was a real thing that he did before he got corrupted. I would think of them as two separate people, Innocent-Light (who he would be if he never got a hold of the death note) and Kira-Light (who he became after getting the death note). Not sure if either of you noticed this, but as soon as Misa and Light relinquish ownership of their death notes and lose their memories about everything regarding the death note, they are drawn differently. They look cuter and Light's facial features look rounder while him as Kira-Light is drawn a little sharper. If you listen closely, Light's voice actor changes the way he speaks as well. Kira-Light sounded more smug and arrogant, but Innocent-Light sounds a lot more genuine. To me, Misa sounds the same because I feel like she didn't really change very much as a person after she got her death note. She kinda seems like the same person before and after getting her death note.

riddle

Also in terms of general interest in the anime, I felt like you did after a certain episode (I will let you know when the time comes lol). I never read the manga, but apparently, a LOT was cut out. After that specific episode, I felt myself losing interest in the show because the story moved extremely fast compared to these episodes where things were taken slowly. Though despite that, I still really enjoyed the ending of the show. I did come to appreciate those episodes that I was initially mehh about after rewatching the anime several years after though, so there's that. Maybe I should get on the manga so I can appreciate it better.....

Esquirebob

Stick with it!!

Bogdan Narušavičius

Sarah will not be able to finish these series :D Especially when second half of the show is arguably worse than the first half.

Bogdan Narušavičius

it takes one time to use the death not for any reason to be corrupted. Its like ring of power, the only way to resist is to never use it.

Sylvia Chen

I agree with you Sarah. The fact that I don’t even remember any of the plot of this episode is testimony that it’s lagging. And I actually caught up with this classic during the pandemic, so not that long ago. But do recall the revelation after still very surprising, so maybe just hang in there a little bit longer and see how things go?

I personally watched the whole series, but I also know plenty of people who dropped the show around this point. I say give it a couple more eps and if you aren't feeling it, just drop the series. If it's not fun for you, there's no need to force yourself to keep watching.

I know there's a good amount of people that have gripes with certain segments of the show, so you're not crazy for not loving it My philosophy when watching shows is to trust in the author's vision. The author wrote the story Death Note the way he did for a reason. Some people's reactions to shifts in the story are to scoff or be upset, and while I understand where they are coming from, I personally decide to sit back and trust the creator. There will likely be more times when you are unsatisfied with the story's direction, but all of the plot points together make the whole story. You are allowed to dislike the story, but I think it's slightly unfair to wish events didn't happen/played out differently, because the way events do happen make the entire story what it is (changing a part would change the whole). TLDR: It's totally fair to not like certain plot points but I think it's fair to the show to trust the author to tell his story. I really hope you can get back on board and enjoy the show again!

JujuChonk

I think watching an episode week per week also makes it bit tougher and strained. Making it feel even slower.

Sarah

That's what I was asking Adam... is Light this person we now see without the Death Note or is he Kira deep down? Not everyone would have made the same choices he did, so I think he has more Kira in him than he is currently aware of

Sarah

But if you are susceptible to changing like that with power, doesn't that mean that you really are that person deep down?

Sarah

I had to make a quick video about this... it's so hard to differentiate between the essence of who a person is and what power does to people

Sarah

Tbh, I feel like I've been way more accepting? nicer? to Light than I normally am with characters like him 🤣

Sarah

I didn't notice the changes in animation but now I'm going to pay closer attention to it

jo

I think that’s a fair thought. Imo though, the potential doesn’t always equal the person and identity isnt so static or ‘essential’ in my view, but also highly influenced by circumstance and nurture. Anyone can grow up in an abusive household and become more cruel than they normally would be. Anyone can take a hard drug, and it will change them irrevocably. Anyone can be put into a terrible, dire situation and make bad decisions. People’s inherent traits definitely influence things, but imo history shows that even good people will do bad things in bad situations. I definitely see the gray area though and find this an interesting discussion on nature and nurture! An example from literature: Lord of the Fireflies.

jo

I think everyone is capable of great good and also great evil, depending on their unique journey and circumstances. No one is incorruptible
