There are so many ways to analyze it to pieces since we get a massive info dump here but the show very much existed season to season so they did the best they could at the time. And yes, Sam could have powers but you might recall the ol' black eyes issue came from those powers just like when Dean twisted his own soul with the mark. Pretty sure neither of the boys should want to be demons at all but this early Sam model was really way "too precious for this world"! Now I would at least like to point out here in 2x21 that Sam has found out that he has had demon blood in him since he was a baby and that his mother knew who/what Azazel was and confronted him still. Dean doesn't know about this at all until he gets tossed back in time by Castiel in 4x3 and that's when we hear the whole Azazel was covering his tracks but more importantly he finds out about his mother's deal to save John that led to their entire family's demise. In 4x4, Dean shares the trip back in time with Sam who slips and mentions this was all done so 'Yellow Eyes could bleed into my mouth' which was news he never told his big brother. It really helps to further divide these two while powering season 4 like crazy! I only really caught it on my second watch so maybe I went overboard with this post. And boy are we just barely scratching at the surface that is the Winchester family lies - hah!

The whole thing with the Special Kids is confusing. There are two parts at play here. One is the bloodline issue for Lucifer - and Michael. The best vessels are those of a certain bloodline - I forget if it's Cain and Able, or something else. That bloodline is best suited to being able to be a vessel for an archangel. That didn't seem to require the person to have special powers. The special powers seem to be important for the "soldier" part. For leading the demon army. Seems like it was important that they have powers that would be used in leading the army. Still has some logic gaps in there, but that's the gist. The powers are what made it possible for Sam to expel the demons. Even though it took demon blood for him to really be successful. It is odd that Sam never seemed to get the full powers like the other special kids - like Ava. I've always thought it was because he didn't want them and so pushed them down. I also think "opening up", as Ava calls it, is like allowing the evil part to take over. Why Ava was able to kill people and not feel bad about it. Seems like every special kid who opening up basically turned to the dark side. Except Andy. He didn't really "open up" though. He meditated. lol I think Sam was a special case, so they had to find another way to manipulate him, if he wouldn't go willingly into the dark side. So get him with Ruby and hooked on demon blood. Kripke, and others, have talked about it before - that they wanted Sam and Dean to be humans, without special powers. For the most part. Fighting against a world of evil, supernatural, beings. So that's why Sam didn't become a big time psychic. They just left all that unresolved and open for head canon. The ending of this episode is so sad, especially coming after the last episode. Ava was summoning the demon to kill the other special kids for her. In other worlds, it wasn't them. We know that. We've seen some of those other universes. Apocalypse world didn't have a Sam and Dean, so the fight between Lucifer and Michael happened.

In several times watching this show, I always thought the same as Shelley. That the demon blood/special kids go hand in hand with being Lucifer's vessel. But your and others explanations here, really clarifies and makes sense now. Thank you for pointing out that the show was working on two sub-plots in regards to Sam. (one in conjuction with Dean - the vessel bit).
