Houses of the Holy is one of the first episodes where we really see how desperate Sam is for having a "holy mission" for himself. It's something that leads him down a bad path a time or two. Thinking he's got a special role to play.

Season 2 is in my top three (with season 4 and 5) and I think the main reason is that all the MOW episodes are woven into the main story so well so it feels so cohesive. The Mark of Cain story line is my favourite story arc but the season is behind Season 2 because of a few bad MOW episodes which spoilt the flow. The best seasons are the ones that have MOW stories that do not feel like filler.
