I adore this episode. Soulless Sam is freaking hilarious when he isn't, you know... turning his brother into a vampire or trying to kill Bobby lol. Definitely would have to say Sammy won this episode, since he banished the leprechaun but honestly I would give it to him just because of his fantastic one liners.

Not watched the ep yet - but season 6 is so much better on a rewatch, it's like watching a movie with a twist at the end that changes your whole perspective on things. Now you know what Cas and Crowley are up to, you see it through different eyes.

FYI - I saw a 'fight the fairies' beanie hat at comic con this weekend! But in the UK fairy as an insult wasn't a popular insult and these days even less so!

If there's one thing I wish it's that they revisited the idea of fairies as another reality. We only saw them again once, in LARP and the Real Girl, and they didn't connect it to this one. Did they care when Chuck blinked out the worlds? This is mainly a good excuse for Jared and Jensen to show off their comedy chops and they're having so much fun with that. One thing that's underrated about s6 is how playful it is with different ideas and formats - Bobby's PoV episode, Cas's PoV ep, this X-Files riff, the cowboy episode, the Titanic one and of course the great 4th-wall annihilator, the French Mistake. And all the time the underlying arc is so dark and upsetting of course 😂

Shelley - I think the father here parallels Samuel, but almost in reverse. This episode kind of mirrors the plot and the reveals of Caged Heat, too. I won't divulge the details because it's much more fun to watch you rediscover this amazing season, but that's my take. But yes, you are right - this is about deals and the consequences and sacrifices because of them.

I love Soulless Sam. By far my favorite evil persona one of the brothers took on. Even more than Demon Dean.

Glad you're loving season 6 more on rewatch. It's my second favorite season after 5. Funny enough, I think you'll enjoy the S7 rewatch more than you think too. Especially given today's political climate... the Leviathans were metaphors for capitalism. Dick Roman is a fun watch next time around knowing that.

Soulless Sam is also my favorite, and Jared absolutely slays as the straight man in this episode. Soulless Straight Man Sam FTW. It's a legit shame that Jared doesn't get more credit for his work in this season.

completely agree! While Deanmon is fantastic, he is still kinda Dean. Just with no morals and very, very limited compassion. Soulless Sam is… empty. The absence of everything, good or bad. Just… a shell, literally. And for someone like Jared “puppy dog eyes” Padalecki to pull off this cold, dark, empty being, with zero warmth or kindness, is just A++++ acting. Just phenomenal performance. Even Jensen has said it was hard on him this season to act with Jared, because it was such a different version of Jared then he was used to

At 1:12:09 mark, Shelley: "But now I know what it is - Is that the lie about working with? Is that the lie about Crowley? Not the lie about - I still don't know why he's lying about being the one that brought Sam back. It has to be some deal with Crowley not to say or something." So this is my takeaway on why Cas didn't tell Dean about Sam. If I am not mistaken, everything will be revealed in The Man Who Would Be King. But because of the timeline jumping back and forth, we lose track of what happens first and what comes next in that episode. I'm not sure if you would prefer to not know the answer why, Shelley, but sometimes, since as you said S6's plot story becomes clearer when you know what's going on, you enjoy the journey better. So, with this in mind, below in the reply is my understanding of why Cas did what he did, in S6 actual mytharc's chronological events. You don't have to read further if you don't want to know yet.

- After Cas brought back Sam in Swan Song, he didn't realize that Sam wasn't wholly Sam. Instead, he straight went back to heaven. - There he was confronted by Raphael who wanted to restart the apocalypse, and because Cas objected to that plan, Raphael blasted him away "into next week". - Cas knew he wouldn't last a straight fight with Raphael. So he went to see Dean at his and Lisa's place. "But watching him, I stopped. Everything he sacrificed, and I was about to ask him for more." - Crowley intercepted Cas at the exact time there when he was considering whether to ask Dean for help. - Crowley then persuaded Cas to have a chat in hell and discuss a business transaction - a deal - that would lead to a happy ending for all parties. - He then leaned hard into Cas's hubris as "God's favorite" since everyone in the heaven and hell realms now knew that Chuck brought and rebuilt Cas back after Swan Song, with a power upgrade to boot - Cas was brought back "new and improved". - Both of them then concocted the plan to take souls from purgatory as a power source in the fight against Raphael. - The plan then was to find monsters to use as bait to capture their alphas and get info about the whereabouts of purgatory. - This plan needed the very best hunters for the plan of capturing these monsters et al to work, so Crowley suggests they need experts in the field, meaning Dean and Sam. But Cas emphatically said "No ... not Dean. He's retired, and he's to stay that way." - In the meantime using Sam is okay, lol. - So Crowley then brought Samuel topside to team up with Sam instead of Dean. So there you go. Because of this plan with Crowley behind Dean's back, Cas didn't admit to Dean that he pulled Sam from the cage. On top of that, he wasn't aware that he brought back not og Sam but soulless Sam. Whoops. Sam and Samuel then went hunting with the Campbells during the year before Dean was attacked by the djinn in Exile on Main Street. Cas also didn't see Dean during this time of year because he was handling Heaven's civil war. And he's avoiding Dean too because of the plan. When Dean saw Cas next, it was in the episode The Third Man where the civil war was in full force. tldr; it is my opinion that Cas didn't tell Dean he is the one who pulled up Sam from the cage because the plan with Crowley might be discovered. Moreover, he needed Sam to hunt with Samuel. He doesn't want to be questioned by Dean and for Dean to pull that particular thread, as then his lie about working with Crowley would become unraveled, if and when Dean seriously questions him. Of which we will see that happen in The Man Who Would Be King.

For what it is worth, I think Cas's situation here is almost but not exactly similar to Dean's when in S9 he lets Ezekiel possess Sam, in that they are pulling the "if you are not here with me, you won't find out what I had done" playbook. Dean kicks Cas from the bunker due to Ezekiel's ultimatum (he is hiding from the angels) and has to hide from Cas that Sam is possessed by an angel because if Cas is around, that secret will be found out. Most importantly, Dean wouldn't be able to answer Cas's question on how an angel can possess Sam because the answer is due to the subterfuge that Dean is engaged in with said angel. Sam then is gaslighted as a result. Here in S6, Cas cannot tell Dean that he pulled Sam from the cage because almost immediately afterward he engaged in a plan with Crowley that he wants to hide from Dean. He then avoids Dean and cannot answer Dean's question about 'who pulls Sam out of the cage' because of the subterfuge with Crowley he is currently in, and both Dean and Sam are gaslighted as a result.

Only correction I'd have to what you said would be that Crowley didn't bring Samuel back. Samuel was in Heaven, ,not Hell. So Cas would have had to be the one to bring Samuel back.

In the Man Who Would Be King, Crowley said he brought Samuel back CROWLEY: Fine. Then I know of a certain big, bald patriarch I can take off the bench. The point is...They can get us to the monsters. The monsters can get us to Purgatory. I know it.
