Mack's moralising pisses me off as well - especially since it's coming from a rather sanctimonious (and ultimately hypocritical) religious world-view. I guess he's retreating into this more naive black-and-white world-view because he's finding it difficult to cope with what's been happening - we already know he's had difficultly accepting that the Framework was real. In his current mindset, I don't think he should be at SHIELD - he doesn't seem to be willing to accept the nuance that's required to their jobs.

Nice to know you're reading the comments but sad you got spoiled on the Thanos reveal. I want to comment on the relationship between AOS and the MCU but I don't know what movies you have seen since Endgame.

Laurel

Not a spoiler. Infinity War was released before 5x19 aired.

Becky White

The show only hinted at it. Someone in the comments told her what it meant.

Laurel

No? Someone who saw Infinity War when it was released, then watched 5x19 when it aired, would know what the New York reference is talking about (the IW trailers also showed shit going down in N.Y.). Hearing Thanos simply name dropped this episode wouldn’t have been a surprise.

I am one of those people who really appreciates what Mack brings to the team (and the show). He has his own, wholly-separate from SHIELD, sense of morality that allows him to say what really needs to be said. The "problem" with the other characters is that are quick (maybe too quick) to just fall in line with what Coulson decrees. Or to let slide what Coulson lets slide. Mack's an essential member of the team and he should definitely be there.

There’s a heavy argument to be made that AoS *is* part of the MCU and an argument to be made that it isn’t, I personally include it but I know many others don’t (mostly because they haven’t watched the show) but even then some people that have watched the show also don’t consider it part of the MCU. AoS is by far and away the most tied into the MCU in comparison to the other shows i.e. the Netflix shows, there’s been multiple cameos, references to films that were airing at the same time, the same can’t be said for all the others. As for AoS affecting the MCU at large, no it doesn’t really, but then again neither do majority of the other shows including the Disney+ ones with the notable exceptions being WandaVision, Loki, FaTWS and Ms. Marvel. There’s basically 3 options you can take Aos is *purely*canon and always was (my take), AoS is not canon, and AoS is canon by way of the introduction of the Multiverse. As a side note, I don’t know the full history or all the details but I know a big reason the films didn’t cross over more was because Kevin Feige didn’t like the man who ran Marvel Television when TV and Film were separate divisions (iirc).
