Hi! The question thread is up and ready for April.

Here you can ask me things you're wondering about for our games or company and they'll be answered at the end of the month an an audio recording (with a text transcript too). Just make sure the questions long follow the guidelines!

The thread will close after April 19th.

Guidelines:

1. Please don't reply to other people's questions even if you know the answer. The fun of joining a Q&A is that the developer can give a direct response to you and that everyone else also gets to hear/see the answer in the end of the month post. Having another player resolve the question in the comments right here might not be what the asker was hoping for. This thread is more about having a good time rather than looking for an immediate response to an important question. And if you do have a question you want to hear about right away, it's best to ask in some other thread or to message me directly.

2. I'm afraid questions about what scenes/choices/art assets Our Life: Now & Forever will include aren't answerable right now. Most of the details are decided as the game is created and currently I'm only writing Step 1. I do know some things coming later, but only a small fraction of the whole game.

3. The questions can't be about more serious/potentially upsetting topics because I don't want those listening to suddenly be surprised with something they might not have been prepared for/want to be confronted with.

4. Please keep the questions here to things that wouldn't be really hard to tackle in an off-the-cuff, spoken out loud kind of Q&A, aha. Questions about a half dozen characters or wanting an entire theoretical situation described aren't super doable in this situation.

You can always send me questions outside of the audio Q&A if they wouldn't work here!

I feel like someone asked this question before, but I'm just gonna ask again, lol. But what types of music would be Tamarack and Qiu's favorites? Like, rock, classical, pop, indie? I think music taste says a lot about a person.

If the LIs and side characters could play an instrument, what would they play? What songs would describe the LIs in step 1 (and for Derek/Baxter step 2) What would Qiu dance to? Classic ballet music, other genre's or would they quite literally, dance without music? If Tamarack were into dancing, what kind of dancing would she learn? (You don't need to answer all of these lol)

Regarding the special/cultural outfits we can wear at Tamarack's tea party, will there be any chances to see the names of the outfits so we know what we pick out and understand a little more about them?

I really enjoy the use of motifs or recurring themes in your writing, it's part of what I think makes the script so rich and fun to read. For instance, I really like the superhero motif sometimes used in Tamarack's imagery. So my question is, are there any personal favorites or ones you think some readers might not pick up on right away?

Yay, time for over thinking again :D Will we get insight into how quis parents met? They look like they're opposites, and I'd like to know :) In regards to a past ask, the whole crushing but not liking romantically thing. I think it confuses me because you can crush on tamarack yet not like her? because when tamarack says your her favorite, the option is along the lines of "Why would she say that" and even the mom looks at you iffy? Is that not the samenthing?(cause you can crush on celebrities and friends but not want them romantically. Can have a crush on the opposite gender but not want them romantically) Can we have a crush on Mr lin like we did Mr holden? And make him feel awkward like we did Mr holden o3o Will the skintone color scale apply to clothes as well(multi colors) What kind of voice do you imagine all the main characters haveing?(ideal voice) Will qui dislike us, if we dislike their friends?especially in step ,3? If we suddenly become mean, Will everyone be like why? Or will the story just continue? Which character is your favorite!? :o What punishment did we all recieve for running away in the rain? Can we please summon satan in the magic circle!? Do you feel as if it was the wrong decision to have tamarack wait for qui and MC in hide and seek rather than just go home herself?(personally that made me mad for some reason.) Why is jealous/not jealous/envious not an option if your neighbors? I'm jealous of my neighbor. How dare she have a cute garden >_>

I have a question, we hear a lot about Mr. Holden's backstory in the DLC but what about Kyra's? Did she have a good home life? Did her parents approve of Cliff? Also, do Baxter, Cove, and Derek have specific ''types'' that they find attractive physically? Or are they just more attracted to personality?

Hello! Hope everything is well~ I'm in the process of writing a dating sim, but I find myself continously getting stuck when I'm writing. Do you have a process for getting rid of writer's block? Also, what inspired you to use moments instead of a linear story? It's by far my favorite way to play a dating sim.

Hi! I was wondering In OL2 if the game would notice if you only verbally spoke to Tamarack and/or Qiu. Or like that the mc doesn't try to make any friends outside of those two.

I'm sorry if you already answered this, I only got here recently. Is Serenity nonbinary? Or are they something else? I was just curious. I have one more question. Feel free not to answer if you think it's too dark. Does Step 2 Qiu have gender dysphoria? I thought that this might be something brought up.

I know that if Qiu is in a relationship with the MC, they wouldn't appreciate the MC identifying with a sexual orientation that implies attraction only to men because that would be treating Qiu like a man when they're nonbinary. But how would Qiu feel about the MC identifying as androsexual, which is attraction to masculinity or people with masculine qualities, regardless of gender?

Hello, I'm continuously impressed with everything yall do to make OL2 even better than your already incredible previous games!! I was wondering, and this probably won't be relevant until Step 3 is in development, but will OL2 be using the initiative system that OL1 did? I know Qiu and Tam's interactions are already super customizable, so I wasn't sure if this will be a separate selection once all the characters are older. Also, a goofier question: we don't see Vianca and Serenity until Step 2, but what would they be dressed as if they were in the Step 1 Halloween moment?

Hi! I have two questions. The first is: will we get to see Qiu's bedroom in step 1? Maybe in the remaining free moment (don't think so) or in the dlc? And two: will it be possible customize Qiu and Tama's studiousness in ol2? I understand that Qiu will probably always have an apathetic attitude towards school in step 2, but i was wondering if we would be able to influence in any way whether they later choose to go to college (of any kind) or if they'll do something else with their life.

Hey! So, I have one question that you may have an answer for now that you're nearing completion of Step 1 of OL2 - but of course if you don't, that's fine. In Step 1 we're able to have a MC who is upset at the fact they don't have a father. I plan this to be a big thing for my MC. You told us we'll be able to have "father figures" among some of the adults, but in the case of this game, I'm not planning on going that way - will it be possible for the MC to reject any idea of a "father figure" because none of them would be "their actual father" (I mean, to be able to actually decide this is what MC thinks)? And on a side note, even if it's unfair to Opal of course, will we be able to ressent her for that specifically? Yeah, a bit of a bummer question, but I sort of want my MC in OL2 to be more "problematic" than my OL1 MC, and this is a path I'd love to explore! But regardless of if you actually give us these options or not, I'm still very eager for what's to come. Thank you for your dedication to both the game and the players!

Do you have any exact heights for Qiu and Tamarack? You mentioned a while ago we could specify we were taller or shorter than them, but I sort of struggle to imagine that without knowing how tall they are. Thanks!

In the step two preview, I'm getting notes of depression from Qiu and anxiety from Tamarack. Are these topics going to be addressed in the game? I'm looking forward to how you might deal with them.

Hello! To open strongly here I'll say I really don't know where exactly the line is drawn on rule 2's questions about future stuff so apologies if I'm asking something that breaks that rule. My question is how will OL2 handle the MC's hobbies? In OL1 it was as simple as having a character ask about them, but in OL2 we're presented with quite the list of activities for the main character to do after school. Will any of these activities come up again and how much will these shape your character? Thanks for your hard work!

In OL2, will the origin options (hometown, race, nationality) you can type in ever pop up again? I'm not expecting the game to analyze what I type and have custom responses or anything, just wondering if it will ever show up in dialogue or if it's just for Immersion. Back to OL1, is there a specific place in Nevada that Kyra lives? Or is she just in Nevada in general? Asking because the fact that it's a 10 hour drive from Sunset Bird didn't seem like a random choice (but it might have been lol)

Hi GB, been loving OL2 since first beta. To follow up with a question from last month, someone mentioned that Tamarack's step 2 outfit was designed with the mindset that she's quite insecure about her looks and how she's perceived. Do you feel that she has that same vulnerability when it comes to the MC or perhaps with them she's really not even thinking about it!

Hello! Honestly i am a bit scared to ask question of things about the beta, since we can't reveal anything from it so... my first question is... can we ask stuff about scenes from the beta? My second is (trying to be vague here) Will we have more than one chance in step one to become best friends with Qiu? And we will have things like that in the other steps too? Chances to change status in the middle of the step (becoming best friends or crushes or in love in the future?)

Hello to you and the team! I hope you're all doing well! My question is about the art for OL1&2. in your opinion, do you like the art style of OL1 or OL2 more? They're both amazing regardless! It's just that OL1 had a lot more defined and bold outlines; OL2 has more soft and blended outlines. To follow up, does it have anything to do with OL1 taking place in the summer and OL2 taking place in autumn? (Such as, more bold line art for OL1 because summers, especially in Cali, are brutal?) Here's a question! What was the Baumann family (Frederick, Nichole and Tamarack) daily life like before she moved to Golden Grove? I know she was homeschooled until her move, but I was wondering if you imagined what a young Tamarack's dynamic with her parents were like before they decided she needed more than they were presently able to give her. She's such a high energy kid, I can see Nichole and Frederick going "I wonder where she gets it from" or something like "She must get it from YOUR side of the family" with a playful snort in response "No no, it's from YOUR family"

- Hello! Thank you for answering my million questions each Q&A I appreciate it! Feel free to skip anything you can't answer! Will we see an obvious shift in the relationship between our MC and our LI in OL2 if we chose to stay with Tam or Qiu and called them our best friend in the next moments? - For context, I am romancing Qiu... In the game we have choices to show affection to both Tam and Qiu. I'm sure that for Tam, she takes it as platonic as I plan to just be great friends with her. But let's say that I show more affection to just Qiu down the road since I'll be in a relationship with him. Will the game remember that I used to show both characters attention and now Qiu mainly gets it? - Is the jealousy meter in OL2 going to available for step 3 as well? - It's okay if you can't this right now or at all, but how is the new color system coming along? It's something I'm really excited for when the time comes! - I'm not sure if you remember, but in the last Q&A, I asked about the second color in our hair and if it was two toned, but you said it was just shading. Does this mean we won't be able to have two-toned hair in the game? - Lastly, It's okay if you can't answer this, but I saw someone ask about visiting Qiu's room so I am building off of that. I know the MC's room was an occurring hang out spot in OL1, do you plan to have the same dynamic in OL2? If so, do you plan on doing the MC's room as the hang out spot or will it be the woods or hide out?

I've been following the Patreon for a couple months now, but this is my first time actually submitting any questions! I have three I'd like to ask if that's okay :) 1) During Cove's epilogue in Step 4, multiple people make jokes referring to him proposing during the trip, as well as everyone being available to call after the proposal actually happens. Were they told previously that was something he was going to do, or are they just all that good at reading him? I'd believe either, honestly. 2) We establish in Step 2 that Cove's really bad at naming things, which got me wondering if, when the time came, he'd have any baby names he'd be partial to. Would he want something more unique like his own name, something more common, or would he just leave that decision entirely up to his spouse? 3) Is there any kind of official release date for the artbook (exact or just in general)? I want to make sure I don't miss it!

Hello, first I want to say that I love the universe you have created. I have known your games for a long time, but only recently decided to join the community as a sponsor. I am fascinated by how you carry out this whole project, and that is why I would love to know more about how you are able to carry it out. I would be happy if you could satisfy my curiosity about how you face each day to make all this a reality. First of all, apologies if these are obvious questions for you; as I have just joined the community, I don’t know if this is something you are tired of answering or if you talk about it in some space that I have not yet been able to see. -------- Regarding planning: 1. How do you plan your milestone schedule? That is, how do you manage to specify the estimated delivery dates of the games so accurately? As far as I know, this creative task is quite complex, and I feel a lot of empathy for the creators and think about the difficulties that creating all this may entail, especially starting a company from scratch and setting your own guidelines. It simply seems to me like a majestic task. For that same reason, what would the planning of a normal week look like? Is there a weekly plan? 2. How do you maintain the balance between posting on social networks and the creative work? I feel that it is a very complicated task, especially posting in so many places and with such regularity. 3. Last curious question, I find it impressive how you work the stories. Does it really get built as it is created and takes shape on its own, or is there a general underlying structure that serves as the basis for creating the Moments? Hello! I hope you're doing well! I'm pretty new to the Patreon, so forgive me if I repeat a question you've already answered. Sorry for the amount, here are my questions: 1. How many "Our Life" games do you plan to create? I know your next game won't be "Our Life," and I'm equally excited for that, but I'm wondering if you'll just continue "Our Life" after that or take a break and try something new. 2. My MC changes his nickname in step 2, Elizabeth style. I was just wondering if there'd be a small little line (at the least) that points that out? Though it's such a small detail and might be hard to code in, I'd understand if not. 3. One of the greatest things I love about the "Our Life" games is how much you can be yourself with barely any restrictions, which is why one of my biggest critiques about OL1 is the amount of relationships you are forced to be a part of. Of course, no matter what you do in life, you'll meet certain people, but I never really liked that I was forced to like them. I think you might have mentioned it before, but will this still be the case in OL2? 4. Will I get to be a bully in step two, and even if not, how would the LIs of OL2 react to their childhood friend and/or crush becoming so mean? 5. This one's really simple. There are those questions where you type in your answer; I always ignore them because I don't play visual novels with my keyboard close at hand. Do those actually matter? Should I be answering those? 6. Ok... But will I get to have a motorcycle?... Think about it.

I just replayed the Step 2 preview and remembered writing of a 'mailbox incident'. Is that incident something you plan on having in a moment in Step 1 or just having it as a general 'something happened' type thing?

Qiu mentions that his mom has a good memory in the prologue. Does she have an eidetic memory, or is she just better at remembering things than he is so he interprets her as remembering everything? If her memory was eidetic, i think that would be a really cute addition. Especially if there’s a future dialogue choice to remark on the MC’s memory regarding the leads.

sorry this is such an off the wall question, but i was replaying ol2 beta and was suddenly wondering if the mc has a tv in their house and if not will there be references to one in the future (totally fine if the latter part can't be answered yet). the living room doesn't look like it'll have a place for one, but we are only seeing it from a specific angle, and also it's a decent sized house so having a designated tv room/den doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. i was just wondering because i remembered the mc in ol1 has one in their living room and thought the occasional references to everyone sitting around watching tv on inside days and talking about random shows was a cute touch. thanks!

Hi! Lately I've been too busy to keep up to date on these, so I'm sorry if this has already been answered, but I noticed that in the fancy fun moment in OL2 that when presented with the option to wear cultural clothing, there was a specific option for traditional Russian clothes that wasn't just a 'type your own culture' thing. Does this imply that Opal has Russian roots, or is just randomized or a glitch? Again, sorry if it's been asked before, I haven't been able to look at every single q&a 😅

Nothing has changed since I was six," which made me curious about his childhood. Could you please share more details? And, is the 'old crutch' a metaphor, or did something actually happen? (1) What kind of shoes does Baxter wear in Step 3 and then in step 4? Like Wingtips? Black and white dress shoes? Dance style shoes since he is noticed in step 3 to have a little heel on them? (2) Will Qiu have a discussion with MC (if they are close) about figuring out their gender identity like Cove did his sexual identity in step 2? Or will they have already come out prior to the start of step 2 like in the current preview?

Hi! for OL2 - will there be a similar scale (studious, sporty, mixed) that Cove had in OL1? Or will Qiu and Tama's interest topics/levels remain the same regardless of MC's answers and responses to them? Same with the relationship that Tama/Qiu have with each other, they seem to have a set narrative trajectory but will that/could that contain differences depending on choices we've made in the game? Sorry if this doesn't make much sense.
