Hello! Today we've got May's Q&A thread. It's a day later than usual, since the beta was ready by the fifth.

Here you can ask me things you're wondering about for our games or company and they'll be answered at the end of the month an an audio recording (with a text transcript too). Just make sure the questions long follow the guidelines!

The thread will close after May 19th.

Guidelines:

1. Please don't reply to other people's questions even if you know the answer. The fun of joining a Q&A is that the developer can give a direct response to you and that everyone else also gets to hear/see the answer in the end of the month post. Having another player resolve the question in the comments right here might not be what the asker was hoping for. This thread is more about having a good time rather than looking for an immediate response to an important question. And if you do have a question you want to hear about right away, it's best to ask in some other thread or to message me directly.

2. I'm afraid questions about what scenes/choices/art assets Our Life: Now & Forever will include aren't answerable right now. Most of the details are decided as the game is created and currently I'm only writing Step 1. I do know some things coming later, but only a small fraction of the whole game.

3. The questions can't be about more serious/potentially upsetting topics because I don't want those listening to suddenly be surprised with something they might not have been prepared for/want to be confronted with.

4. Please keep the questions here to things that wouldn't be really hard to tackle in an off-the-cuff, spoken out loud kind of Q&A, aha. Questions about a half dozen characters or wanting an entire theoretical situation described aren't super doable in this situation.

You can always send me questions outside of the audio Q&A if they wouldn't work here!

Have you ever thought of how different the game would be if you switched it? 3-is noticing different feature on mc like bandages specific to each step or for each story. I noticed that sometimes I wear random and they're just like 😀 4-what cake flavor, do you think the mains will like best? 5- would you say that, you've followed your passion, dreams, in creating these games and such loving memories for others? :3

Hi!! I'm a new member of the patreon and I'm in lovee with OL games, thank you for these amazing experiences! My question is; Do we ever get in the first or second step a hint about being bullied? It doesn't have to be the whole thing but, for example, my MC has always been intimidated by other children at school, even if they're not interacting, because they're Qiu's friends and he feels out of place there. So would be get an option to choose that'll be like "In school wasn't the best, the kids were mean" or something? It's definitely ok if we can't!! I'm just curious if that could add levels of drama to each gameplay

Hi! Real quick I wanted to say I love OL2 so far, the art style is beautiful and it’s one of the best games I’ve played by far! My question is, when the MC and Qiu are in his treehouse alone (depending on if you didn’t leave with Tamarack to greet her grandpa in Magic part 2) and you say that you like him, does he realize they probably mean romantically if their relationship status is crushes? Hi! First of all, thank you for creating these amazing games. It's really cool to follow, and I hope you're doing well :> So, for the questions. First, I've been wondering, and it might be difficult to say now, considering we're still at part 1 for OL2, but when we get further into the game (later steps), do you think we'll be able to choose stuff like... body image and type, changing height - that sort of thing, like we were able to in step 2 and foward (I think) in OL1? It was a very nice feature, so I'm just curious if it'll be similar here. And secondly, would you be able to explain a bit more about the difference between envious and jealous in the game? (sorry if you've already answered these questions before. If so, feel free to skip!)

Hello and I'm glad that I managed to see OL2 on Steam after playing OL1, love them both. As I saw with another question a person asked for bullying, will there be any drama choice that the player can choose for our character to deal with (in any of the Main/DLC steps?). I noticed that players can choose to have a MC to have a scar. It would be cool for the MC to have some choices to explain about the scar(s) or if they choose to not talk about it. Sorry if the questions is a bit too serious of a topic.

Is there a reason stylistically or otherwise that the MC doesn't have a dad in either OL2 or 1? I thiiiink another game of yours also only has a mom with no dad but I could be wrong on that. But yeah I'm just curious about the consistent lack of the MC having a father/male figure, especially when the RO(s) typically do! It is super interesting and neat though that the MC can still lament over not having two parents (in OL2), good personalization!

Hello! I hope you and the team are doing well, and I can't wait for what comes next! My first question relates more to OL1 but also applies to OL2; it's in regard to hair color. Are unnatural hair colors "normal" in this world? Or would the assumption be that they dye their hair. We know that Cove, as a baby, had green hair; so I've assumed it's natural. Another question relating to that would be about character creation. Thinking more about OL2; since we can make our MC have unnatural hair colors, would it be considered natural? In OL2 we haven't really seen anyone with super unnatural hair colors (though obviously that could change!), unlike OL1 where from the start we see Cove. These questions might not make any sense so I'm sorry for that! No pressure to answer any of these! Keep up the amazing work but more importantly; take care of yourselves!!!💙💙💙

Especially if MC seems embarrassed by it? And has Mrs. Murray worked with students with it before? If you can’t answer that’s fine!<33 I was reading Tamarack's bio for step 3 and I was wondering if the MC were to be best friends with her would Serenity still be considered the closest with Tamarack? Or am I reading it wrong? Please correct me if I am (・・?)! And lastly Can Derek and his family speak Spanish?

Hi! Thank you for the awesome update this month (really exceptional moment!) and for the usual hard work on the game and these Q&A sessions! My question this time is, yet again, an OL1 one. In the past, I had asked if, between steps 3 and 4, Baxter would listen to the songs of a MC who became a famous singer or if he'd avoid even that - and you told me he'd avoid it indeed and he'd even switch channels and what not if it came up... But how is he AND the other two OL1 LIs with a super famous singer MC after step 4, once in a relationship? Do they like to listen to the MC's albums and watch concerts? Is it too awkward for them? Does it depend on the music style? I'm sorry - it feels like I can't help but come back to this theme from time to time!

Is there a reason qiu’s parents don’t seem to have any contact with extended family?

Alright, so I hope this question makes sense, and is also not terribly difficult to answer in a Q&A format. So, we know that in OL2, Qiu is genderfluid, and they go through quite a journey figuring out their identity. Jumping off from that, I was wondering what the cis LIs' feelings are in regards to their gender. I'm mostly asking about the OL1 guys, since that game is complete, but feel free to answer about Tamarack too if you can. Is it something they've thought about? Are they firm in their gender identity, or is it not something that matters much to them? How would they feel if someone called them by different pronouns? Like, for example, I have two MCs who are cis women, but since they're both queer and have trans friends/partners, they've thought about their own gender. One is very firm in being a woman, and would feel uncomfortable being treated as anything else. The other decided that woman fits well enough, but doesn't have super strong feelings about it. So they're both cis, but have different feelings on their gender. I hope this makes sense. Have a great day!

Hey, you're producing incredible work! I LOVE the conflict you set up between Tamarack and Qiu as the core of the game, and I especially adore Tamarack and her focus on herself (instead of others, like Qiu) and how that develops through game. I didn't expect to care so much for her, but I do! My question is: would you say you learned something during writing Step 1 for OL2? OL2 has pretty different systems for player's choice, so I wonder how you felt about writing them. Feel free to answer or not to answer my questions if the answer would be too long. Thank you!

Hello! I hope you're doing well! It’s been a long time since I had a question to ask, but here I am again! Really sorry for the long questions... and thank you in advance for your answers! 1- About the “jealouse over” meters, if I remember correctly in the last Q&A, you said that it would be available in step 2 and 3, which is great! But then you said that it would automatically be off if we start dating one of the LIs. So my question is why did you make this choice? I can understand if we have a crush on both LIs and then when we go out with one, if the other is jealous that he was not chosen, In this case, I wouldn't have liked that, but you said that if we choose Qiu for example and we had a crush on Tamarack, our relationship with her becomes friend. In this case, I could see our best friend being jealous that we spend more time with our partner and the other way around! In short, I told myself that I would ask instead of trying to find the answer myself! 2- I love how you did the different moments so far. how you managed to highlight the 2 LIs is really brilliant, and the moment when we have to choose who to spend time with is a delicious suffering. But sometimes it's so hard to choose… That's why I particularly like how in "Hide and Sick" we can decide not to take sides and flee! I like Qiu and Tamarack both equally but differently. I Fangirl on Tamarack and I like Qiu in a more casual way. As I can't have them both as best friends, I decided that they would each have a special relationship with my MC, so Qiu as cruch and Tamarack as best friend. But then I wonder how you came up with the idea of ​​making monents where we have to choose between the two? It’s really great, I just wonder how this idea that will cause player suffering was born haha 3- Now that you've almost finished writing step 1, I was wondering if in this step we could tell our best friend that we have a crush on someone? I know this could be a spoiler, but I'll take the risk of asking. I can't wait to tell Tamarack all my secrets! XD 4- Last question, you can avoid it if you want because it is more serious than the others. In short, I have never been very familiar with the LGBTQ+ community, but I try to learn whenever I have the opportunity to be as respectful as possible in everyday life. I remember that on several occasions, you said that Qiu would not like an MC who was only attracted to men because that would be like treating them like a man. So, I'm wondering how my MC should express it in the game. If there is a monent like "talk" from OL1, is the sentence I like men but there are exception could pass? Because in trying to respect the logic of my character I don't really know what direction to take. She fell in love with Qiu at first sight, but she thought they were a cute boy. In step 2 she understands that they’re not a boy, but she still loves them, so maybe she's pansexual? Sorry if it's not very clear, but since I don't yet know what sexuality to give to my MC, I was just wondering what Qiu would prefer an MC to say to respect them as much as possible!

hi i hope you're doing well! i have a few questions specifically about qiu and ballet, so it's ok if you don't exactly have answers for them yet. 1) since qiu seems decently experienced with ballet already in step one, when exactly did he start lessons? was it as early as first grade or just right before 5th grade started? or is it a secret for us to find out later? 2) will we ever learn why ballet is important to them or just why they chose it as their hobby in general? 3) i saw it mentioned in another q&a that qiu likes doing classical stuff, so would he ever be interested in pointe dancing or is it a little too rigorous for his taste? 4) not necessarily related to the ballet, but i was wondering if qiu is the tallest out of the age group and if so, are they taller than renee by step 3? that's all for now thank you for your time!

Will there be interactions when you happen to take the same last name as other characters? And what pet names would they prefer to be called? 2. does Qiu have any other unnamed friends in step 2 or is its just Ren (and possibly mc) ? 3. Would Qiu cry when Renee graduates before them? 4. Is the line “don’t go into the woods unprepared, cause the things in the woods are prepared for you” a reference to something? or a saying? 5. In the ol2 intro when tamarack says she's living with her omi and opa I thought she was pronouncing it wrong because in Dutch it's oma and opa, then I realized it was German not Dutch. I was wondering if in a later update you could say she's saying it wrong or something like that. If not I still find it funny :)

Hi, I hope you and the team are having a wonderful day. I’m having the time of my life following the journey of your games and being able to play them makes me even happier. I just have a few short questions I would love to have answered! 1) Will the MC be able to change into a bonnet or head scarf for nighttime/sleeping? Like for the slumber party that's planned? 😊(You can skip this question if it's too much of "future" thing you haven't thought of yet) 2) In step 1 the MC has a small choice of thinking that they want to be popular like "Qiu". Will that be brought back up later? And if so will the MC be able to be "popular" in later phases? It's fine if not, I was just curious since it's such a cute little detail. 3) I recently played the Step 2 preview and it made me wonder about the relationship system, it looked like you could lose your crush on the LI if you wanted to in the next phase. Which is interesting because I don't think you had that choice in OL1, once you had a crush you couldn't just "lose it" in the next phase. Is that a planned feature or is an error because the game is still in it's demo phase?(Feel free to correct me if I'm misunderstand or misremembering something)

In OL1: Was Baxter aware of how much he actually liked the MC? It feels like that he wanted to say more in Step3 then he actually did. 2. First I just want to say I’m absolutely loving your games, I stumbled upon the OL2 demo on itchio about two month ago and since then, I’ve gotten OL1 and all its DLC’s and joined the patreon to play the ol2 beta, so quite a rabbit hole I’ve fallen into, lol. Anyways, I am wondering if you can tell us anything about Mr. and Mrs. Lin? We’ve gotten some info on Opal and Tamerack’s Grandparents so I feel like I’ve got a handle on who these characters are, but Qiu’s parents are still a bit of a mystery.

how large is Golden Grove, exactly (give or take)? A lot of the descriptions suggest that it's rather small and sort of an "everybody knows everybody" town, but it has it's own schools with multiple classes per grade (and possibly the private school Baxter goes to too?) and is large enough that nobody knew who Pran or his parents were

Would/does Baxter own a fake ID, especially at Step 3 OL1? Baxter seems a lot quieter in all the content I've played where he's 14 and younger, what makes the difference in him getting more talkative? Is it a 'tourist phase' thing, an age thing, or an MC proximity thing? I've gotten the impression Cove doesn't really take well to difficult personalities, so what makes Jeremy different? What's the source of Cove's fondness for him, especially by the Wedding DLC (if he's 'befriended' and invited)? Sorry if this has been answered somewhere but I haven't found it? Does Qiu/Autumn prefer one name over the other?

Does Qiu continue to wear their big sweaters even outside of fall? Like if it were summer or spring, would they still wear their sweaters or opt out of them due to the weather? The game makes it seem like they love and feel most comfortable in their sweaters, so I’m just curious how that plays into their warmer weather attires, if at all :0 Btw, thank you for all the hard work you and everyone at GB Patch do! 🫶

I was curious if little Cove always acted the way he did in step 1, at least to some extent. Like, was he as grumpy with his mom, and just as grumpy with his dad before the divorce? I would imagine obvs the divorce made things more strained, so I guess a better way to word my question is how different was little Cove, if he was different at all pre-divorce.

It's wonderful you like the game! I'm not sure I can answer this in a Q&A for all patrons, since it is about beta-only content. But Qiu does understand that it is a crush. But he's just a kid and there's nothing he's gonna go about it besides saying he likes you too.

Glad you like them! Though I'm sorry, I can't answer questions that confirm if new scenes/choices will be made. I won't know until I write it and haven't yet. But it's not likely that there will be a choice to explain your scars because there's endless ways to get a scar, including some things too dark to bring up in this game.

He was a huge part of OL1 and so the moms were designed to be different from him. And in OL2 having a single dad moving to a new town with their one kid would have been too similar what was done with Cliff and Cove. I'm glad you think that element of OL2 is interesting!

Okay, Qiu and Tamarack wouldn't think much about it on their own. The MC simply is how they are. But if MC was embarrassed by it, they'd want them to feel better over it! And Mrs. Murray does have experience with students who have learning disabilities.
