Hello. I've got the question thread ready to go for this month!

Here you can ask me things you're wondering about for our games or company and they'll be answered at the end of the month an an audio recording (with a text transcript too). Just make sure the questions long follow the guidelines!

The thread will close after July 19th.

Guidelines:

1. Please don't reply to other people's questions even if you know the answer. The fun of joining a Q&A is that the developer can give a direct response to you and that everyone else also gets to hear/see the answer in the end of the month post. Having another player resolve the question in the comments right here might not be what the asker was hoping for. This thread is more about having a good time rather than looking for an immediate response to an important question. And if you do have a question you want to hear about right away, it's best to ask in some other thread or to message me directly.

2. I'm afraid questions about what scenes/choices/art assets Our Life: Now & Forever will include aren't answerable right now. Most of the details are decided as the game is created and currently I'm only writing Step 1. I do know some things coming later, but only a small fraction of the whole game.

3. The questions can't be about more serious/potentially upsetting topics because I don't want those listening to suddenly be surprised with something they might not have been prepared for/want to be confronted with.

4. Please keep the questions here to things that wouldn't be really hard to tackle in an off-the-cuff, spoken out loud kind of Q&A, aha. Questions about a half dozen characters or wanting an entire theoretical situation described aren't super doable in this situation.

You can always send me questions outside of the audio Q&A if they wouldn't work here!

You might have answered this before, but since it's possible to go from neighbours to friends or friends to best friends in the middle of a step, can you go from friends to crushes in the middle of a step in the same way? Thanks for all your hard work!

Enjoy your fun break with your friends this month! 1) For the OL leads, you always pick a defining hair trait. So I was wondering what made you choose them (ex. Cove's wavy brows, Tamarack's hair speckles, Qiu's uneven hairline) over any other in the running? 1.5) For any other hair traits in the running, which ones were some strong contenders for the leads? 2) If you were to put the OL leads into XOXO's setting, who would you see being romantically compatible with who whether during attendance at SSB or post-graduation? 3) For Project W, I'm not sure what all I can ask since this has been in the early developmental stages, but I hope you're having fun with the process. With all the changes you've been making, is that character you were attached to able to become a lead in this version you're currently crafting? Thank you again!

Hey! So I'm from the UK and our schooling system works a tad differently. After doing a OL1 replay where step 3 is about choosing what you're going to do in the summer, would OL2 be more,,,I guess the word would be strict in making these choices? I'm more or less wondering how it works for Americans, since in the UK; Being 18 and in fall means you would HAVE to either be working or carry on schooling of some degree, so it got me vaguely curious since you don't have summer vacation to make these choices in-game like last time. And secondly: Do Qiu and Tamarack have set heights for Step 1/2 and birthdays? Or is this commonly something you work out more near the end of the game?

Hello. I've recently discovered your OL series and I absolutely love the way you tell your stories. I was wondering where you draw your inspirations from? I enjoyed all the moments from OL1, they're so wholesome and heart warming, and sometimes I caught my self thinking " have these moments been lived by someone, somewhere." of course not precisely the same way, but maybe some parts, some detail. They truly feel like moments from someone's childhood. Sorry if that's too personal, I'm not looking for specific details, just curiosity, good old " I wonder what the author was thinking".

Hello! I am here quite recently, so this is my first qna, either-way, thats not important. I am a big fan of OL2 and recently played OL1, both games I adore, and oh the artstyle of OL2 has me on a chokehold‼️ Of course, done with the pleasantries and now onto the questions (apologies beforehand if they’ve been answered before, are not well-worded or dont follow the guidelines (ones that dont follow the guidelines can be skipped i suppose)). 1. Will there be an option for the MC to be absolutely mute, deaf, have allergies, etc. etc.? Or is that more of a “user came up with that idea and can just imagine it throughout the game” thing? 2. Per each step, how many moments will there be? Will the amount be different each step? (including both DLC and base-game moments) 3. Can the user change MC’s preferences during newer steps? Like in step 1 MC could choose their favorite color and can that color be changed in the following steps, or, as said in the first question, will it be a “user came up with that idea and can just imagine it throughout the game” thing? 4. I’ve not dug into the OL2 side of patreon as much as I’d like, but from the step 2 preview i suppose the step 2 in general will be a bit more serious? As in going through identity crisises with Qiu or feeling out of place with Tamarack? 5. A bit on the character’s side of the questions, what would the LI’s go to activity be to blow off some steam or to stop their sadness? Maybe go into the forest, take a swim, hit something, eat a lot of chocolate and ice cream? 6. Which LIs are dog, cat, reptile kind of people? Or what would their favorite animals/pets be? 7. Would any of the LIs like to dye their hair? If so in which color and when?

Hello! I just wanted to say I really enjoy your games and fell absolutely in love with the Baumann family! Is there anything you can tell us about Tamarack's dynamic with her parents? I know they weren't present much in her life but did she get along well with them when they were together? Does she hold any resentment toward them for leaving her with her grandparents and if so, will we ever see her hint at it to her parents? I also was wondering what her dynamic with her grandparents would be like in step 2 but that might be spoilers or just not planned so feel free to skip that one.

Hey! I was interested to know if there'll be any sort of search for our MC's donor or maybe doing a DNA test if they're completely no-contact. My mom was adopted- and though the experience is different, I know she had a lot of questions, about culture and health, even though she would never consider her birth parents her mom/dad. I'm sure some donor kids have similar questions. Just curious if this aspect will get a bit of attention or not :^)

Hi! I hope you have a great month. I noticed you use a lot of neat symbolism for storytelling and character development in your games. It's fun trying to interpret the OL2 character designs (Qiu's notebook and Tamarack's bag?) and beta moments for that sort of thing as they develop, but talking about that would spoil things, so: Are there any bits of symbolism in your other games that you are especially proud of? Things that players might not have picked up on, either in character designs or in the stories themselves? Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks!

For example, my MC rn is Chinese, and he calls his mom māma, but I can’t put that into the name because it always shortens to mma since it doesn’t recognize that. 2. This might be uncomfortable for some and it's also kinda NSFW, if you are unable to answer (probably because you don't relate to it) that's fine. Just like Qiu I identify as He/They and I have a strong attraction to masculinity, not necessarily men, masculinity. However the same apply to genitalia as well, so I often date people who use He/Him or He/They like me because there are more chances that they do not have a vagina (which is why I avoid She/They people, not because I think they are a woman but because there are higher chances of not having it, but even if they did I feel uncomfortable with the pronoun She/Her or She/They because She/Her or any use of that pronoun is triggering for reasons I won't explain, but I never misgender people or treat them differently because of that, I simply won't date people who use "She" even if they don't really identify as a woman because it's triggering) as that wouldn't feel good or right (It is a really hard concept to explain genital preference, as a non-binary I can understand people might not like if I don't have a specific genitalia while they still respect the person gender, however this is a gray area that for most people is not a issue but it still makes some uncomfortable, personally I don't mind the question as the comfort of both people is important and usually the question of genitalia is never asked unless the two plan to take things further and be intimate) so what would Qiu think about that? Would they be uncomfortable with that thought/question or would they be fine with it? Once again, I'm sorry if it's uncomfortable or you are unable to answer to it, I can understand if it's not a easy answer to give and you can skip this if you want, it is a hard question to answer as for a while this question was a hard one for me as well. Second question which if it can't be answered because I added this after the Q&A was closed, what brush do you or whoever made the art for the game use for this new artstyle? I admit I absolutely love it because it looks so soft and nice, I would love to use the same brush for some of my drawings because it looks really cute and I love the "softness" of it, it makes look everything so soft and almost silky (I know it doesn't make sense XD)

This has probably been answered before, but will we ever find out more about our house in OL2? Like the previous tenants/owners or the general history of the house? It’s something I’m very curious about, but I understand it’s not necessarily important to the story so it would make sense if it’s not something that comes up.

I hope it doesn't sound rude or anything but you can actually! I never really found a way to go from friend to crush with Tamarack but found one (or maybe more than one, but I remember only one) for Qiu. For example if you do the thing where you go to the park with your bike, skateboard, roller skates etc. (or with nothing) and crash with your wheel choice Qiu will rush to help and there the MC will develop a crush through the step/scene instead of starting with a immediate crush from the selection screen.

For Tamarack I personally found nothing if not the one of Qiu where you fall from your bike etc. or jump off Qiu bike. I can't find a way to become BFF with Qiu if there's one and I can't find a way to change Tamarack relationship through the step from friends/BFF to crush, so I think there's nothing for Tamarack about that yet but it could be I just didn't manage to find it.

From what I remember (not American but heard a lot about the American system) at 18 they finish high school and start the pursue of a degree. Usually they aren't expected to be already working, unless they are renting a room/small apartment. That is what I remember hearing though, some college students to get to work on their chosen field even before the degree/while studying as a apprentice of sort from what I remember but that's when things get a bit blurry for me and I might be wrong with that, however the first part of them starting their college at 18 and possibly getting a job that can pay for a rent is something I remember for a fact is a thing depending on the person.

Completely mute is probably not going to happen, I mean, I'm not mute but I don't talk much and I did make all silent choices but the game will still make your MC talk and even say full long sentences, so you can never be fully mute. As for deaf, that is easier to be seen as a thing you can chose for your MC even if not Canon given deaf people aren't always completely deaf and can hear with a hearing aid. Blind is difficult because the game does describe the MC seeing what a character expression look like or what they are doing, I know some blind people aren't exactly blind and can see lights or shadows but can't see the facial expressions and general appearance of a place, but the MC can so there is no dialogue that let you freely interpret the MC as blind but you can surely adapt it in your mind as a blind MC even if it won't appear in the story.

Hiii! I hope you're alright and kicking! As per usual, thanks for indulging us with these! So! Two-ish (sort of two and a half?) questions this month for me, though obviously it's not as if you HAD to answer any! - In the previous Q&A, you explained how would Ren feel and act if MC was to take her place as Qiu's best friend from Step 2 onward. Since I will have Qiu set as "best friend" for my playthrough, I assume it will be the case in that playthrough. But would her feelings be different if she was as close with MC as the game allows, and if MC always did their best for her to feel included? Also, will acting that way be an option in-game per se, or would that be up to headcanon more than anything, conidering she's an important but still side character? - A very random one now. In OL1, if a Baxter romancing MC (once in a relationship post Step 4) listens to - or plays if they can play instruments - the song they and Baxter danced to during Step 2, because it's one of MC's most cherished memories... would Baxter recognize the song if he happens to overhear? And how would he feel about that in general?

I don't know if this question is completely forbidden, and I hope not😭 Could we know what year Qiu, Tamarack and MC meet? I would like to join OL1 and OL2 but I don't know how old Cove and the rest would be, taking into account that Baxter and Renee appears with two years older than the rest of them. I understand that Cove is destined with OL1's MC in many of the universes, I think I read it on his Wiki or other platform, would it be possible for OL2's MC to count as his possible romance or It has nothing to do with it? Is there any aspect of an MC that you don't like, dislike, or would talk to them about to avoid in his presence? (It can be answered either with the love encounters of OL1 or 2 :D🧡 ) Maybe I couldn't have known your work much before, but believe me, I love how various styles of art are worked on, and how everyone in general strives to provide wonderful work!! I'm eager to see how OL2 turns out, although I also hope you don't get too careless to finish the project soon, we love you so much!!🧡🧡🧡

My questions would be: 1) what would the OL2 characters’ signature scents be? We already know that Tama smells like her granny’s perfume at times (in step 1 at least) but what about Qiu and the boys club? 2) are the OL2 LIs animal people? My question is in relation to OL1: you’ve told us how the LI’s would react if MC was a singer, but what if MC was an actor? In addition to that, what would the LI’s do/what would their reaction be if MC was famous/well known? This next question related more to Baxter: if MC becomes popular/famous we know he wouldn’t go around telling everyone that information. But what would happen if a couple he was working with offhandedly mentioned that they’re fans of MC’s work? Would he find it funny (not in a bad way of course! More like a “oh you have no idea what I know” way)? Would he tell MC? I think thats it for my questions. As always, feel free to skip any of them!! Hello!!!! I woke up thanks to my baby (I'm 33 weeks pregnant...almost there 🙌!!!) And I needed to do something to fall back asleep. So...here we are!!! 1. ) When you started working on OL2, did you intentionally want a different art style, or were artists from OL1 not available? The art looks awesome!!!! I was just curious. 2. ) In OL1, the choices had different colors on them to help players understand the tone (if I am remembering correctly...) they had. I have a question about some of the behind-the-scenes: How does planning character designs work with the artists? Do you provide them a description or sketch, or do you give the artists more design freedom? Also, because it's summer and I'm missing Cove: We all know Cove loves the beach, but would he want to visit other beaches (East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, even other countries) or is he happy with his familiar California beaches?

I know that Qiu’s arc in step one is that they are over accommodating, going more than above and beyond for other people but what made Qiu become this way exactly? Oh god thank you XD I was trying to understand how to do the friend to crush thing with Tam but never managed to, though I should have suspected it had to do with the same step. At a point I thought it wouldn't given you can become Tamarack best friend easily from the prologue but not with Qiu from the prologue. Do you know how to do a non-manual shift from friends to BFF? Because I'm just curious to see it happen to be honest XD

I admit I didn't meant to answer that on purpose, like, I genuinely didn't notice that rule and just answered. I did noticed only later I couldn't answer questions and did try to delete them but couldn't at all, I don't know why. The site or app for Patreon says there's some kind of error and won't let me delete the comment where I answer so I can't take them away. I did read the rules but somehow missed that. I have some sight issues so all this words kinda mixed up together and it's easy for me to miss some things, for example reading books is difficult as it makes me feel like I'm going cross eyed and I always lose the part I was reading, making reading unbearable, that carry over on phone as well where black on white or white on black mess up my reading and causes me to skip lot of things.

I'm afraid I can't answer this in a Q&A like this. But I can reply here, Qiu would prefer not to be asked about their genitals, but it wouldn't be a 100% deal breaker. As long as Qiu still felt respected and understood, they could accept that preference from a partner.

Thanks for the answer! The curiosity mostly came from me but also from a friend of mine who was a bit too scared to ask herself (as she feared people would think she was trying to make Qiu a man just based off their genitalia/her preference for someone with a penis regardless of gender) Also I'm sorry I answered some of the questions when it wasn't supposed to, as I didn't really see that rule when reading the Q&A post and noticed it only later when someone pointed it out. I did try to delete my answers but for some reasons found myself unable to. However it won't happen again, I can promise that. Also sorry if it sounds insisting, but what brush is used for the artstyle? I don't know if you know what the name is, given there's a full team and everyone focus on different parts of the game it's more likely that the people doing the art know the name, it kinda looks like a pencil like texture but also doesn't, so I can't really tell.
