Hey everyone! I've seen so many comments suggesting I make a video about Xbox vs. PlayStation, especially lately since the new consoles are out. However, I'm having a little trouble envisioning what the video would be because I've only compared companies before, not products. It's especially tricky because both of these products aren't the main source of revenue for either company. On top of that, I have little personal experience with them so maybe there's some obvious aspects I'm overlooking. I don't want it to turn into a specs comparison or critical review or anything like that. I would want to make sure it sticks to business aspects.

I guess my question is, do you think this would be a fitting topic for the channel? And if so, what should I include in it? What categories should be compared?

Appreciate the help.

The only business difference that really sticks out to me is that Microsoft seems mainly interested in the subscription/service model with their Game Pass and games playable on Xbox and Windows PC’s. Sony has not gone into that model nearly as much.

Brian has a good idea. Maybe also talk about the different additional each unit has added to the gaming industry or how each company fairs in different regions.

I'm not a gamer, so I have no dog in that fight. I remember a few years back asking friends who were gamers if I should buy one or the other... it was a collective shrug. No one seemed to have definite feelings either way. My husband had a PS3, so we upgraded to a PS4 for him. He only plays sporadically. If it interests you, do it! I'm sure it will be interesting and I will learn something--as I always do with your videos.

Honestly, I'd say maybe not. I liked your discussion of the PlayStation in the HD DVD/Bluray video, and that felt appropriate. I'm not sure a whole video on the two would make sense. As you say, neither product represents anywhere near the whole of the focus of their respective companies. Unless there was some interesting marketing case study or aggressive business practices, I'm not sure there would be a whole lot there; i.e. unless you could turn it into to some kind of greater "Sony vs. Microsoft" thing, I'm not sure there would be to much to say. Just my two cents.

Although I've been a bit more of a Nintendo and TurboGrafx-16 person growing up, I haven't been an avid XBOX or PlayStation person. I picked up the XBOX 360 for a handful of games (Forza, PGR) and the PS3 (Gran Turismo) and passed on the XBOX One and PS4 generations. I did have a first-gen PlayStation and a PS2 primarily for the Final Fantasy games but that was really about it. I only picked up the XBOX Series X over the PS5 primarily over pre-order availability more than anything else, to be honest.

I think comparing the issues they've had would be meaningful. On the Xbox side there was the red ring of death problem, and I believe there was a data breach on the Playstation Network if I recall correctly

Maybe talk about the general history of each console?

Even though I'm a pretty big gamer, I agree just talking about that aspect isn't really what the channel is about. I do think you could try and look at them from a business aspect though. Some examples would be: How they both got into the industry. Sony had a deal for a joint project system with Nintendo, that ended with Nintendo betraying them so they made their own as a way to get back at Nintendo. Microsoft came up with the idea of the Xbox originally to promote their directx api, but abandoned that idea in development. Another thing would be talking about their successes and failures causing them to gain and lose market share, which has had really big swings up and down for both. Maybe talk about their own ecosystems and how the two try and integrate with other aspects of the company. Sony has always had their distinct branches, but Microsoft recently is looking to try and merge gaming on windows with the Xbox. Lastly, Microsoft recently has been spending a LOT on the Xbox brand trying to grow it, so it may start turning into more of a focus for the company. They've been acquiring a lot of game developers and publishers recently spending as much as 7.5 billion on a single deal! That's almost as much as Disney spent on LucasArts and Marvel combined. https://news.microsoft.com/2020/09/21/microsoft-to-acquire-zenimax-media-and-its-game-publisher-bethesda-softworks/

The only reason I never got into the XBOX series is: On the PS3 (NOT the PS4), playing online was free. On the XBOX 360, there was a subscription required for playing online.

I think you could make a great video about it! You do a good job of identifying critical events in the life of a company and the effect they've had on the company; so for a video like this, I guess you could focus on the product instead of the company. If you chose to make the video, then I'm looking forward to it! If not, I'm sure you will make another great video!

I’m on board with the ecosystem idea. Less about Xbox/PlayStation- more about video games as an industry, how the business model has changed to monetize various aspects, how the ecosystems have developed. Probably better to stay higher level, if you do Xbox/PlayStation, someone is going to say Nintendo, if all three, someone is going to say PC Gaming...

Vincent has some gems above. I do think you could put a business perspective on it. A mix of history, their relationship to each company in terms of revenue and plans, effort, etc, each brands take on console/business model/product ecosytem, the growth, the struggles, throwing in some general gaming industry info, but tying back to both brands and how they integrate to the overall gaming industry, how they've positioned themselves, overall sentiment from a business lens, and perhaps some element of future-oriented stuff in the works for the brands and the future of gaming. Staying far away from comparing specs, or which is better, etc. you may want to make that specific noted in the video, but do it after some youtube specific KPI, like 1m watch time for example, WHy? For your channel! You will likely get some fanboys waiting to see which you deem "the best" only to be disappointed you will not be discussing that, but only after you've picked up some ad revenue/youtuve algo KPI. :)
