Nile could barely look away from the new information that Erwin had brought back. “War engines… Airships… Iron ships… So many weapons…” If Paradis tried to fight a conventional battle against these…it would be a massacre on par with what had happened when the government had sent a quarter of the Walls’ people to their deaths after the breach of Wall Maria.

“Is there any possible way that we can catch up?” Pixis asked, notably NOT drinking from his flask as he looked over all the information presented. “The world has moved on while we’ve been stuck behind the Walls, ignorant of reality.”

Erwin could understand their sentiments, he’d been overwhelmed to learn all of this as well. “I believe, once we can make Eren King, that we can spread this knowledge to the people of the Walls and start to implement some of it here.”

“What do you think we should focus on first?” Zackly questioned as he looked through some of the papers. There were a lot of innovations that they could use on Paradis Island.

“I believe the railroads and trains are a good place to start. The ability to move large amounts of various materials, as well as people, swiftly, will be a great boon to reclaiming the Lost Lands once we finish eliminating the rest of the Pure Titans. Beyond that, spreading out to all of the shores of Paradis Island will require a great deal of materials and people.” Erwin said as he held up copies of the papers filled with notes and sketches of trains, railroads, railroad stations, and diagrams showing how they all worked.

Pixis agreed with Erwin, nodding his head towards the younger Commander. “I agree. A network of railroads will be vital to the future of Paradis Island. I believe that we’ll need to fortify our shoreline as well. If we use the Shifters power, surely we could have that done before we’re attacked, right?”

Nile looked thoughtfully at the railroad notes and then back at the various pages filled with the military advancements made over the last one-hundred years. “We’d need a lot more Shifters to have a chance. Not just soldiers either…we’d need artisans, craftsmen, architects, many skilled tradesmen from all walks of life. That’s the only way to get the expertise required to build things like this.”

“We can’t just start making Lesser Shifters freely.” Zackly reminded Nile with a grimace. “Until we depose the current regime, they’ll use the Interior Police to maintain their power by any means necessary.”

Erwin looked at Zackly closely. “Speaking of the current regime. Was Historia’s intel usable?”

Zackly and Nile both perked up just a bit and smiled a little.

“Incredibly useful.” Nile confirmed with a short nod. “We know of the Reiss Family and where their lands on as it’s a matter of public record, just like for any of the nobles and their land holdings.”

“Looking into it, shortly after Wall Maria fell, the entire family was supposedly killed by vagabonds or bandits while praying at a cathedral on their lands.” Zackly said, but it was clear he didn’t believe the official story. “It seems a bit too coincidental for it to have happened at exactly that time. The sole survivor, and the one to tell the story, was Rod Reiss.”

Pixis hummed thoughtfully. “Right after Wall Maria fell, killed on their own lands where no one could see or hear anything, and that would’ve been about the time…or perhaps slightly before…we believe that Eren Yeager came into possession of the Prime Attack Titan and the Prime Founding Titan.”

All four men shared a look of suspicion.

“We’ll need to discreetly look into this a bit more, but it’s clear that Rod Reiss is the true King of the Walls that the Assembly and the Interior Police answer to.” Zackly said plainly. “We must thank young Historia for her information when this is all over. We would’ve been stumbling along in the dark trying to figure things out if not for her.”

-Marley Port ~ Paradis Island-

A mid-sized ship was docked at the port that the natives of the island didn’t even know existed.

Only a small group of people got off the ship and made their way up the long staircases to the top of the solid wall that separated this small harbor from the rest of the island.

The group was made up of soldiers, all wearing the white uniform of Marley.

However, two of them stood out from the Marleyans.

The first was a man with a tall, broad, well-toned body with gray eyes, shaggy platinum blond hair, and a matching mustache that descended into his beard. He wore a button up shirt with an armband around his upper bicep, loose pants, combat boots, and circular glasses. His eyes gazed out over the plain that lay beyond the concrete wall with a calculating expression.

The young woman that stood beside him was short with long, disheveled shoulder-length black hair, a defined nose, and relaxed dark brown eyes. She wore a white blouse, a long trench coat, and a skirt which went down to her ankles, as well as black lace-up boots. She also wore the same armband as the man on her left arm.

“Do you think they’re still alive, Zeke?” The woman asked the man quietly.

“I’m not sure, Pieck.” Zeke replied to the woman. “We’ll need to make our way across the Titan-infested lands and then slip into the Walls to find out where the Warriors are, or what happened to them.”

It had been years without any form of communication from the four Warriors sent to Paradis Island to reclaim the Founding Titan. Marley couldn’t wait any longer in hopes of news, so they’d sent out this small force to Paradis to gather intel and report back.

The way Marley’s enemies were moving recently made most of the higher ups certain that a war would break out soon. They needed their Warriors back, and if the small force could get accurate intel on the Wall Devils (by any means necessary), that would be even better.

“We’ll move out after sunset when the Titans are immobilized. Until then, prepare everything that we’ll need!” The leader of the Marleyan soldiers ordered the group, shooting a look at Pieck since the woman would be their transportation through the vast wilderness of Paradis Island.

-Government Assembly Hall ~ Wall Sina-

“Rod Reiss has found very little information regarding more than Nine Titans.” Deltoff, a noble of the Assembly that supposedly represented the merchants throughout the Walls, informed the other three.

A man dressed in a military uniform, though not directly part of the military himself, known as Gerald, spoke next. “If there’s no information in the Reiss Family’s possession, then where did these other Titans come from?” he shifted in his seat, almost as if he was uncomfortable. “I can only keep the Branches of the Military from reporting so much when it comes to the safety and security of the Walls.” The news that the breach in Shiganshina had been successfully sealed had spread too fast for anyone to stop it.

Aurille, a rather tubby man that was the representative of the nobility on the Assembly (though all four of the Assembly members were nobles themselves), grimaced in annoyance. “If we don’t know then why not just send them out on a suicide mission? As long as they’re gotten rid of then we won’t have to worry about them anymore.”

Roderich, a noble that was a high-ranking member of the ‘Wall Faith’, though he didn’t actually believe in it and was just using it as a means to exert more control over the masses, sighed. “We can’t do that arbitrarily. Even the Wall Faithful are praising the Survey Corps for ‘repairing the holy Wall Maria’ right now. If something happens to the Titan soldiers suddenly and without explanation, then we’re going to have too many people asking questions.”

“Damn it…” Aurille growled as he gripped the armrest of his plush chair. “If only the Reiss Family hadn’t lost their ability to alter the memories of the masses.” They could’ve simply made everyone within the Walls forget about these ‘Titan soldiers’ and eliminated them easily to maintain the status quo.

“I have the Interior Police on standby right now.” Gerald said to his fellow Assembly members. “If we can find a reason, some excuse that would satisfy the masses, to have these Titan soldiers imprisoned, then we could simply eliminate them quietly.” It was how most of their problems disappeared after all.

Deltoff scoffed at Gerald’s words. “We tried that already, but the military tribunal decided to make use of them…and they succeeded.” That was the biggest cause of their current situation and the hidden barb that it was Gerald’s fault for not directly intervening wasn’t missed.

“We shouldn’t squabble amongst ourselves.” Roderich said, looking between Geral and Deltoff. “If we can’t find a legitimate reason to imprison them, we can always fabricate one.”

“With the people currently singing the praises of the Survey Corps and that commoner Yeager?” Aurille looked at Roderich like the man was a fool. “We’d have riots and uprisings throughout Wall Rose in a matter of hours!”

As the four men continued to toss ideas back and forth, mostly just going in circles, none of them seemed to realize that the status quo of their current system left them ill-equipped to deal with another power that had rapidly risen in both trust and fame within the Walls. Their hesitation and inability to act (without trying to foist responsibility and blame onto each other) was the start of their undoing.

And not a single one of them realized it.

Well, well, well, the Survey Corps is enjoying some nice R&R! They deserve it!

Some of them are REALLY enjoying the down time! Hehehe~

Poor Armin…can’t even get back to his own bunk to grab a book!

The people within the Walls are praising the Survey Corps and Eren Yeager for sealing the breach in Shiganshina and giving them real hope of retaking Wall Maria!

That doesn’t sit well with those currently in power though. Who, while they love the idea of getting back Wall Maria, don’t want SOMEONE ELSE getting the credit and hearts of the people for it.

Unfortunately, as we’ve seen plenty of times in history, when a small number of nobility try and maintain a status quo during a societal shift…they often want to reap the rewards/benefits without putting in the work. After all, THEY shouldn’t do the work of commoners…but if the peasants start talking and thinking differently than the ruling class wants them to…well, you can’t just kill them all…who would do all the peasant work?

When it comes to responsibility and placing blame, nobility tend to try and foist that off on others…including other nobles.

The system doesn’t work when it actively fights against itself.

Will the ‘revolution/rebellion/Yeagerists’ be able to make their moves before Rod Reiss and the Assembly can get their shit together?
