Another point is Engel lost his primary to a more left wing Democrat despite or because of a Clinton endorsement so he does represent a dying breed

One of my guilty pleasures is to come across a prognostical piece some months after it was originally published and see what people got wrong and what they got right. In this case, I think we have to give more credit to the scholar Lawrence Douglas interviewed for the Tamkin piece. Trump had a clear strategy of challenging the validity of the vote and pursued it relentlessly throughout November and December leading to 6 Jan 2021. People like Phil and me underestimated him in that regard. Where we got it right, though, is that Trump lacked sufficiently wide institutional support to be able actually to seize power. The fact is, there is no need for such a coup from the right in the US because there is no meaningful political challenge to the bourgeois order. Politics in the US is more about which bourgeois snouts will be in the public trough, and which will actually have to earn a living.
