On imperial rivalry in the Sahel.

[Patreon Exclusive]

The interview with Yvan Guichaou continues, discussing naturalisation of forever war in the West, and the long-term legacy of French military intervention in the Sahel. What is the situation on the ground for Malians? What has Russia's involvement been, and is there a continuation of its Cold War stance? And is “imperialism” the right way to understand what’s going on?

Really interesting to hear Yvan's point about the French pride (?) In being suited to military activity in the Sahel due to past experience of desert warfare. I remember similar from some UK commentators in the early days of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, where the argument was that British involvement in Iraq was likely to benefit from experience of urban conflict in Northern Ireland.
