On power, values and class.

[Patreon Exclusive]

British professor Matt Goodwin joins us to talk about his recent new book Values, Voice and Virtue: The New British Politics published earlier this year with Penguin. Matt has argued that a new elite has come to dominate public life, leading institutions and the cultural industries in Britain and across the wider Western world, and that they are fixated with issues that divide them from the larger public – to whom they are bitter and hostile.

We talk about elites, old and new, as well as ideas about elites stemming back to Daniel Bell and Christopher Lasch, and how these elites are shaping the future of politics.

Matt also gives us a breakdown of the most recent local elections from the UK, what has happened with the Scottish National Party since the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon, why Keir Starmer’s Labour party will likely win the next election, and why the Tories are - contrary to their ruthless reputation - failing to adapt to the new political landscape.

The new elite came en masse to cry here

You know how it's easy to see that? Most of the comments try to undermine the author or othe commentators by disqualifying their background, level of education, emotional involvement and so on. When they should focus on arguing the ideas themselves. There you see that all those years in academia were kind o a waste, intellectually. But that's ok. They were there just for the social aspect of it anyway. Now they belong so they can como here and write in a very elitist style that they think the interviewed is an ass.

What I really don't get, with regards to Scotland and its law concerning trans rights e.g.. Yes, one should not fight cultural fights, material politics is what counts. But this law was no identity politics it is a law to help people in real material need. People opposing it making it an identity policy. And the reason the conservatives do that is because identity politics is so easy and one does not have to change anything (materially). Why not ask the question why there seems no politics helping the working class, fighting inflation and so on? Instead trans people get blamed for a wrong politics thus they have to suffer. At least thats what I understood from Matt's argument. To say just 20% of the people are in favour of this law is a very lame argument. If in addition to this law the politics would also initiate some laws that would help the people in their needs, they wouldn't care much.
