--The Vergo moment is an exhibit in a heated debate among fans regarding Haki animation and mechanics. There's a subset of fans that think the following is true: "Armament Haki is actually invisible at ALL times and is only drawn/animated for the audience's sake after the timeskip. Rayleigh called it invisible armor and therefore it is canon that nobody can see it." --However, a larger faction says otherwise: "Armament Haki is only visible to those with Observation Haki, and invisible to everyone else. It was invisible pre-timeskip because we view through Luffy's POV (and Oda was not ready to explain it until after the war). Vergo's Haki was reacted to which proves it is visible to some." --I strongly believe the first one is somewhat ignorant and the second one is more likely true, but I would add this: "Haki comes in many levels. A basic level of Armament Haki allows the user to touch any Logia user and even bypass some other Devil Fruit powers. That level is not necessarily visible and will not be drawn, with evidence post-timeskip. However, skilled users can also use "Armament Hardening" which turns black and adds power. Haki was clearly stated to be used by both sides many times in the war to attack and defend against people like the Admirals and Marco. Therefore the supposition is that Haki was sometimes visible to others but not Luffy yet."

to add to this, oda was developing the idea of haki in those early days, its idea and implementations has changed quite a lot along the entire manga/anime a lot of anime end up hiding some kind of power thing, but once they introduce it, suddenly everyone has it and you see it everywhere. i think its just a thing people get too focused on, its nothing too important in the end in terms of story telling.

smoker's devil fruit is actually considered one of the weakest among all logia, purely because all the smoke he makes is his own body. im not too sure how any other logia works, but apparently smoker's fruit is one of the few where the logia is more like paramecia (in terms that its still their body so you can hit it) maybe veritas can prove me wrong on this xD - im just relaying info i've heard before

Smoker has a weak Logia because smoke is not an offensive element. It just doesn't electrocute, dehydrate, burn, freeze, or have a swamp/darkness pocket dimension. One can see how the Admirals have the best Logias. But mechanics-wise, Blackbeard is the exception and Smoker is like any other Logia: his body can't be touched normally, but with Haki it can be touched. The way I see it, a foe can use Observation in tandem to "find" the body in the element if the Logia is "hiding" but Armament allows contact damage regardless and I don't think "all" the smoke he makes is him. I think the reason for the confusion is that we see Smoker compensate for his weak power by billowing or projecting his fists; he chooses to spread himself thin out of necessity. But other Logias choose not to because they have actual powers outside their body, although Caribou, Crocodile, Caesar, and Monet have also been seen flexing their shape/reach when they feel like it.
