This race of demi-humans (a term I learned recently from Delicious in Dungeon, and now personally apply to the long-arms, long-legs, fishmen, giants, etc in One Piece) is inspired by a lot of folklore. Yes, you saw that Oda's version has thick tails, speed, strength, and are as naïve as children, which is a reference to some myths saying that a fairy cannot lie or break a promise. Tontatta (Finnish origin?) is the name of this particular tribe, while the race is officially called Dwarves (Kobito-zoku contains "child race" but I lack knowledge on whether or not it is derogatory now). The plural of dwarf is more commonly spelled "dwarfs" in reality. However, JRR Tolkien accidentally popularized "Dwarves" (Like elf and elves) so now it's common in my opinion to use 'Dwarves' to refer to the magical creature and 'dwarfs' to refer to people with dwarfism. However, the anime and manga use "Little People" which I assume is an attempt to avoid being derogatory. I don't see why the fictional ones can't be called Dwarves but that's just me. They were mentioned many times in the manga before now, but the anime did not retain them. (I count this info as fair play for an anime-only): -Ch 24, Usopp lies to Kaya that he killed that giant goldfish (ref. @ Little Garden) and fed its meat to dwarves. The fighting fish on the bridge was killed by dwarves to callback to that. -Ch 292, Noland recalls a land of dwarves on the Grand Line. -Ch 501 (Ep 395) Duval gives Sanji a list of slave prices that wasn't translated by the anime, listing demi-humans races you've seen and haven't. Dwarves sell for 700,000.
