Great reaction, discussion didn't seem rambly to me at least xD I agree that while Nia is constantly a damsel in distress, she does show a lot of her own strength which is great. I think the trope isn't really a problem in isolation, it's more a problem of HOW common it occurs that hints at underlying biases in culture. So on one hand I don't have a problem with the trop in cases like these, but the trop as a whole gives me bad vibes cause of just how common it is compared to the opposite where the guy is getting saved by the girl for example. One scene that you didn't talk much about but that I thought was great was seeing the same story Simon mentioned last episode, but from Kaminas point of view. It really re-contexualizes what Kamin thought of Simon. I remember in the beginning you discussing that Kamina said something along the lines of, as long as Simon doesn't give up, neither can I. Your initial interpretation was something to the effect of "Kamina looks down on Simon, so if Simon doesn't give up, how could Kamina", but I think this scene 100% flips that on it's head, Kamina knew that his pravado was often empty, but it's what Simon needed, while Simons inner strength and quiet determinaism was what Kamina needed.
