Hey patrons!

Just in case you missed it, A.J. wrote a spec script/nightmare for How I Met Your Mother called "Have Ya Met Ted?" and you can read it right now by clicking on the link below!

Here's the tagline:

"After one of Barney's plays leads to his untimely death, Ted must reexamine not only his relationships to everyone in the group but, also, to himself. Lily and Marshall enjoy a good steak!"

If you're wondering if the thing devolves into a Lynchian nightmare in typical A.J. fashion, we would argue that that's entirely the wrong question.

The real question is: "Haaaaave ya met Ted???"

Honestly this is a much more hopeful and romantic ending than I thought Ted would get in a surreal nightmare.

The Worst of All Possible Worlds

Definitely the Catholic in me (A.J.) showing but, if a person is truly penitent and wants to change, even the worst of us (and to be clear, Ted is the WORST of us) deserve a second chance. And that change is hard: he's got to break old cycles by killing his toxic self aggrandizing and literally go through the pain of birthing his new self to get it, and even THEN there's no guarantee it'll work out with the Mother. There's only the opportunity that maybe this time it will be better. Which is absolutely hopeful and romantic because I think all first meetings are, inherently. And those feelings are ones I remember the show instilling in me at its best so, I did the best to capture that!

To get just slightly cheesy for a second, that is an aspect of 'The Worst of all Possible Worlds' that I quite cherish as a podcast. Even as the show eviscerates so many of its targets, y’all do a great job at capturing the good core of a project that went terribly wrong. Even with political targets, you help me grasp why people would want to believe ideas that seem blatantly evil. I think this puts the show a step ahead of many political comedy shows which only make fun of the stupid, and don’t bother to explain the stupid. The HIMYM episode was a little painful for me because I also used to be really into that show, and hearing what was wrong about the show revealed quite a few layers of what was wrong with me. Damn! I had a really toxic conception of friendship and romance! and Damn I fall for simple comedy tricks that aren’t funny. So reading your incredibly dumbass spec script (and I mean dumb ass in the good way), I got a thrill seeing the show deconstructed for filth. What I used to see as strong character growth was often an aggressive reliance on line callbacks. Your characters really do sound like the HIMYM characters, but mostly because you repeat exactly what they say in other episodes. Which is what the show itself did. But the last moment still reminded me of why I did identify with Ted, and how that isn’t always a death sentence. I also have a Catholic background, so the notion that bad things are good things that went wrong is fairly central to my worldview. Though as a HIMYM fan I’ll point out that Ted is going over to hit on the mother the night she learns her fiance is dead so he’s going to stike out HARD. Hopefully he’ll get over it? I bet not.
