I think you have Colin all wrong. He's always loved her for her, in a non-sexual way, yes, but also with gentle protectiveness over the years. He once told her, "I'll always look out for you." They have always had fun and he's always at ease with her. He took her for granted. Heck, even Eloise took her for granted. Everyone does. Okay, so, Pen's glow-up, (even though he noticed and complimented her), was not yet the spark for him. The 'eyes' comment caught him off guard. The cut/hand holding/heaving bossom moment had him hot & confused a bit. Plus as soon as she complimented his writing, he forgave her. Then he read the part that she read. Talking about sunlight on skin and tracing freckles from cheek to collar bone. *I marvel at how one can feel such intimacy but also such great distance.* The next time he saw her, he was all smiling and joking and blushing and making deals that she could maybe read more of his journals if she spoke to one Lord that night. There WERE sparks BEFORE the kiss. But it was the kiss that broke him. He caressed her cheek and gave a very sweet peck on the lips, which could have been enough, but they both went in for more. It started as a "I'm going to do something kind for my friend" and it turned into him getting thoroughly shooketh. 🫨 'She's my BFF...now I'm lusting for her?!?! 😵‍💫 ' He was reading the part in his journal AGAIN when Violet found him in the study. And as he pined hard for her, he had to make the realization that the male expectations/airs/phoniness of the ton didn't have to control his life. His mom obviously gave him serious nudges, but the real possibility of losing her to another man is what sprung him into gear. Once he got a taste, forget it...no going back. In the carriage when he pauses and thinks and nods right before exiting- that's when he was like, 'Oh, we are DEFINITELY getting married..

Also, that's, like, sort-of her own personal carriage. These are the guys that drive around Lady Wistledown to shady areas and whatnot. They know shit and are paid extremely well by her to NOT know shit. They ain't saying ANYTHING.
