Anthony Smith

Landsman actually had that opinion of McNulty the entire series. He has a whole speech to Rawls in Season 1 episode 4 about McNulty's addiction/character flaws and how they aren't his fault due to said addiction- and that it's part of what makes him excellent murder police, and describes an absurd John Doe floater that McNulty managed to identify and get the clearances; all in order to convince Rawls to keep McNulty on the team/the detail going, which he managaes to buy for a few more weeks. You call him an ass kisser frequently, but he's less an ass kisser and more middle management as he describes to Kima in Season 4; he goes to bat for his men when he can and with Rawls, of which Landsman is one of the few peoole Rawls like- he talks to convince him/gain sway. But when he can, he does what he's able; like when he goes behind Rawls/the higher-ups to make Carcetti aware of the witness murder angle- which lead to Carcetti getting elected, as Jay no more than any of the officers was a fan of the status quo- even though he precised over it. And he always gives the eulogies because he's an emotional and linguistically intelligent/gifted fellow, which can be observed in his interrogations of Ziggy/Bubbles. Landsman's biggest fuck up/incompetent moment was somewhere in Season 2- it helped fuck Frank in some way I can't recall, but otherwise his worst behavior is being an asshole on occasion and cog in the corrupt system. Which each of our police cast were.
