I've been unable to confirm this, but I was a huge Sherlock Holmes fan when I was a boy, and I seem to recall that readers of the stories had to wait over five years after Holmes's presumed death at the Reichenback Falls, because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had intended to kill him off and have more time to write other works of fiction, but finally relented to the pressure of his Sherlock Holmes fans, which was relentless.

There was a 2 year gap between S2 and S3 ;) And the gap between S3 and S4 was 3 years as at that point Benedicct and Martin had a lot more prominent Holywood work. Looking forward to my favourite season which is S3 and my favourtie episode overall which is one of the S4 ones.

I think the gap in the stories was from 1894 to 1901.
