the thing with Stede is that after Chauncey kidnapped him and said that all he does is destroy people, Stede took that to heart. he believed it so much that he left Blackbeard in order to save him from being destroyed. I'd like to think that he felt he was doing him a favor since I do believe that Stede loves Blackbeard, he just didn't think he deserved him after "killing" 2 people and abandoning his family. why did he go back to his family? well he felt like he needed to fix what he did by "un-abandoning" them, which obviously was silly but Stede has never been the most practical person. and yes, he was being a dick when he got back but thing is, in the end he did the best thing he could've done for Mary and the kids: "die" again and leave them to the life they'd built for themselves after he left them the first time.
