There's a small detail not too many people see, but if you look after Qrow "rescues" Amber, Emerald is blurring the faces of herself, Mercury, and Cinder. Which is why he doesn't recognize them at the tournament.

Also, another small detail that shows a lot. Look at the outfit designs of past Cinder, and current Emerald. They are virtually identical. This shows that Emerald cares for Cinder, and sees her as a mentor.

From what information has been given, it would seem Mercury's drunk assassin dad decided to chop off his sons legs and replace them with robot legs. Mercury didn't like that and killed him.

A few days late, but you've seen Adam before - he was with Blake in the Black Trailer (referenced in this flashback when he tells her, "The train will be here at dawn.") and he also shows up at the very end of Volume 2 for a single line, so this is actually his second appearance in the main show and third appearance overall. Emerald definitely has the most overpowered semblance - the ability to fully dictate what someone can see is insane. Not sure if you noticed, but the little girl that Amber sees isn't just a random character, but actually a young Emerald - green hair, brown eyes, dark olive skin. Not an important detail, but just an interesting one.
