In 1982, former Disney animator Don Bluth took a risk by competing against the company with his own animated movie, The Secret of NIMH. In this review, I’ll be looking into how Mrs. Brisby’s film was gradually discovered to be not just Bluth’s masterpiece, but also one of the greatest animated features ever made.

I don't think the voice actors get enough credit with this film. Hard to believe it was Elizabeth Hartmans only vocal performance, also last film role but that's a different depressing story. Everyone was on their A game.

Ah, one of my top six favorites. To feel old, watching this, even. 😅

I absolutely love this movie and I definitely do agree it deserves amount of praise it’s gotten over the years and is by far Don Bluth’s greatest animated film he’s ever made and one of the greatest animated features ever made, the story is very well done and engaging, the animation is absolutely gorgeous, and the characters are unforgettable and well done, so overall this is absolutely Don Bluth’s greatest animated film he’s ever made and really did a fantastic job to kickstart Don Bluth’s animation career to help make the beloved animation creator we all know and love today. So the next classic review is going to be Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a very interesting crossover, so this is gonna be very interesting.

Definitely doesn’t disappoint to see your review. Probably one of my long awaited reviews from you. Secret of Nimh without question is one of the best animated films of all time. And it’s no exaggeration, it’s a definite must watch for animation fans. Next review is Batman vs TMNT.

For certain, this is a masterful classic. While I'm not a huge fan as much as you, I do understand why this is very beloved. From time to time I would watch this to give myself something suspenseful or to feel inspired, considering that while this ain't from Disney, It shows that you don't need to be from making films as much as the masters.

I also want to add if one expects you were gonna show your DVD cover that you had it signed by Don Bluth himself. Like that alone I thought it was awesome in itself! Take it from me that I own autographs from several of my favorite people, I can say I only met them through the internet during a service that sells autographs or in a live stream video they'll open, you don't exactly get the experience when meeting them for real. Remembering your lookback, You were SO Lucky to see him in person, even I'll admit I'd be jealous of that, considering the experiences and the possible extra photographs whenever people go to conventions. I can tell you treasure all those cells and all of them are just epic!

Sorry if I have been gone for a while, I have been dealing with stuff. But now I am back and I am glad to hear this review for The Secret of NIHM. I think you did it justice Mat. One thing that I also commend is you talking about the music as I took this music course in college and how the composers who work on the films can really help enhance it. There is even a book created by my teacher who I highly recommend for anyone to read if they are interested, and it talks about the greats who even composed animated movies like Alan Menken and Michael Giacchino. Its called Film Music: The Soul of Cinema. So thank you Mat for talking about Jerry Goldsmith in the review. Also I do feel bad that it was a casualty in 1982 to ET. Along with Tron, Blade Runner, and The Thing. I am glad that this movie is still remembered and is still strong after all these years. I hope that this movie will continue to be remembered as the greatest piece of work for animation as the years go on. And I am glad that you shared your love for this movie to help explain how you got the animation cell from the movie. So thank you for sharing.

My eldest siblings watched this film growing up considering they were 80s kids while I, me, my older brother and twin sisters being born in the late 90s, were 2000s kids. I really envy my elder siblings for watching this film in their childhood as this is the type of animated film I wish I could've also grown up watching, but my family unfortunately did not own this on VHS as most of the Disney animated films we did own. I feel like I would've loved this film as a kid as it has a lot of elements that would've been very appealing to me such as talking animals, action with the final sword fight battle between Justin & Jenner and fantasy since I loved fantasy films such as Pinocchio, The Wizard of Oz and The Chronicles of Narnia. I did eventually see it on DVD I rented from my local library in the mid-2010s, probably because I learned about Don Bluth and had knowledge of his films from watching your Animation Lookback on the animation legend and his films, and enjoyed it and watched it again on YouTube when it was free with ads on the Prime Movies section, and I do admire the animation and the creativity when it comes to the world-building, especially in its unique spin on the trope of talking animals living in their own secret world from the humans by adding science to show how it could actually happen and having dark moments to show that this secret civilization isn't as peaceful or easy for the rats as it would seem. Although I do think having the film be rated G is too much for the film considering the dark moments I brought up and how it could be too frightening for younger kids. I think PG would be a far more appropriate rating for the film. But it's definitely a great start for Don's career as the animation legend we know him today.

Good news Mat, Since you did a Classic review on The Secret of NIMH, there’s a movie somewhere on my waiting list that just got bumped to the top. I’ll give you a few hints but I believe you already know what it is: 1. It’s also a Don Bluth movie 2. It’s another one of his best But for now, I wait my turn for my current request.
