If you did not like Disney’s Wish, you’re not ready for how Spellbound is so much worse. In this review, I’ll be looking into disgraced producer John Lasseter’s latest movie where he tries to make his own Disney movie, but even with a talented animation team and the music of Alan Menken, there’s nothing that can save this movie from the curse of being a disjointed Disney rip-off.

I hope John doesn’t get his hands on Nickelodeon. Paramount Animation, maybe. But certainly not Nick.

Lady Tyler Bio Rodriguez

I think it's time to just label Lasseter a public menace and was never the reason Pixar was great.

Nario

Genuinely surprised it managed to avoid the seal of garbage (Albeit just barely)

You might as well factor in David Ellison’s oversight for why Skydance’s management has been on shaky ground. At least his sister, Megan, can operate her own studio’s animation division without the incompetence of her brother and father.

Should’ve give a 4 because it a 4/10 on this one because it sucks just like Luck. I have low expectations coming on this one especially the terrible marketing that it presented me and unsurprisingly, it did because how bad and super bland it is. The story feels unoriginal that it tries to be like Disney and Spirited Away, the writing was barebones, characters were dull, humor was unfunny, the songs were forgettable given it coming from Alan Menken of all people they brought him, the message was badly handled, and a weak direction. Not even the animation, visuals, and voice acting can do anything to save it. I don’t know Skydance Animation will be around much longer with John Lasseter still in charge but he needs to go with the allegations he did and lost of touch of trying to be Disney knockoffs. It sucks and it would be better for everyone to go watch Wicked instead of this pile of garbage.

I honestly had zero interest in watching this movie, especially after the reception of Luck, and judging by this review I’m glad I didn’t watch it, while the movie may have some solid animation, the story is a broken down mess that tries so desperately hard to be like Disney, with characters that are just bland and forgettable, and songs, while not the worst are just flat out forgettable, overall this is another dud from Skydance Animation, seriously this really is everything that people accuse Wish of being, while Wish isn’t the best movie out there from Disney and it does it’s problems, I can at least appreciate that there was effort put into it and the movie itself really isn’t that bad, this on the other hand, you can absolutely tell that John Lasseter is trying so desperately hard to relive his time at Disney after they rightfully fired him and it’s been failing miserably, and honestly at this point I am not ashamed to admit that all the problems from Skydance Animation right now are because John Lasseter and how it feels like all the problems with their movies is because of him and his executive medaling, and honestly this really is further proof that Skydance Animation would just be better off without John Lasseter because of how he is so desperate to try to regain what he lost because he couldn’t keep his hands to himself, seriously at this point John Lasseter should just retire or he needs to be fired because as long as he’s still in charge at Skydance Animation the more he’s going to keep dragging the studio down, also I do feel really bad for Rachel Zegler, she deserves better, I can definitely tell she was trying her best with the material she was given and she has a really great singing voice, and it’s one of the only things I’m looking forward to about the Snow White remake, but I feel sorry for her not just with this but also all the harassment she’s gotten for the Snow White remake, I honestly do care what kind of Thales she has, those people who think it’s justifiable to go and attack Rachel Zegler because of her work on the Snow White remake, those people can go fuck themselves.

I’m surprised that a 4.5/10 movie can escape the Animat Seal of Garbage

Anthony Estrada

I think the theme is less avoid conflict and more about how married couples whose relationships are beyond saving should divorce for the sake of the child, assuming they tried everything. With that said, the execution is so bad that it makes it seem like they had only a couple of arguements and that was enough to call it quits. Your score is interesting in that a 4.5 is enough for a film to escape the seal of garbage but a 6.5 for leo isn't enough to get it the sonic victory theme.

Anthony Estrada

As for my opinion of spellbound, it has an interesting theme, good voice acting, and a good song with the way it was before but the story is awful, the humor is crap, the animation is nice but suffers from emulating too much like disney, and the rest of the songs are forgettable at best and cringe at worst. My rating for spellbound is 4/10

Alan Oliva

I did expect it to be not good, but never think it was terrible to NOT receive the seal. It got a 4 and yet the .5 was enough to avoid it? Oi vey that’s the first I’ve seen of that.

Just viewing this and the trailers alone, this just makes me feel sad for this flick. People who put the effort in this end up with a kick in the rear to make something as bad as this. Sure the animation and the songs I can say they feel like they have most creative ideas, but the plot is what makes it fall apart. I can state they’re more of an animation outsource than an actual studio Like Reel FX. Not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s probably the only thing that’ll keep the studio alive if they keep up this route.

Bryce Gundy

I absolutely agree that the message it sends out is just downright AWFUL! Fighting is just a part of life. It’s a way for us to grow and learn as people. The only times they would be bad is if two people are fighting all the time and they’re not willing to resolve the conflict.

I’m glad you didn’t take your critique against John Lasseter too far like you did with Sony Pictures Animation in your review of The Emoji Movie and that you’ve kept your growth as a critic following the criticism you got from YoshiPlayer for said review and critique of SPA. I’m really disappointed in the person John Lasseter sadly has become. I listen to the audio commentaries on Toy Story & Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life and Monsters, Inc. and he sounds like a completely different person than the one he currently is. Even in those commentaries, he sounded like he treated his female employees with equal respect as his friends and male-coworkers. I don’t know what possessed him to become more egomaniacal and disrespectful towards women, but I’m just glad he wasn’t around to oversee the productions of Luca, Turning Red and Elemental. Let’s be honest, regardless of how you feel about Pixar's input this decade, they could’ve been so much WORSE if John Lasseter kept his old position at Disney and Pixar.

Hopefully anyone who bashed Wish (I don’t think the movie is that bad) would apologize after seeing this one.

Somehow, I got the feeling this was gonna be just another Luck from the marketing alone. I had faith in Spellbound at first, but then the first trailer completed destroyed it for me. I'm glad I'm not currently subscribed to Netflix at the moment, because this and The Sandy Cheeks Movie are good reasons for me to not to. As for Skydance Animation, while I remain cautiously optimistic for Brad Bird's Ray Gunn (that is if it's still in production), I have lost all faith in their other upcoming works like Pookoo. I find it pitiful that so many respectable ex-Disney names, several talented animators in Spain and many of the former Blue Sky staff are now throwing away everything to work with a company with a reputation as bad as Skydance's. A studio that seems desparate in its attempts to copy Disney and give John Lasseter his nostalgia boost to the point that I wouldn't be surprised if Rich Moore was only brought on board to direct their own Zootopia knockoff. So yeah, screw this, I'm just gonna go and watch Moana 2!

Bryce Gundy

Yeah. I really did think that Animat was going to give this a 4/10 and the Animat’s Seal of Garbage at first.

Shane Vance

At least Luck had a higher score, if only barely.
