Long before the epic journey with the hobbits, there was an older tale, now told in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. In this review, we’ll be going back to Middle-Earth to learn about the origins of Helm’s Deep, and if that doesn’t sound interesting, then get ready for a long and boring anime that doesn’t feel like it has much to do with The Lord of the Rings.

Man you put boring on the thumbnail and don’t edit in Homer Simpson. J/K

Movie Madness

Even when i saw the trailer for this I thought it looked more like a limited time Fathom Event rather than a movie made specifically for theaters. I also couldn’t help but notice how incredibly stiff the animation looked when the characters move and talk, it doesn’t sound like I’m missing much by skipping this one. I’ll just go watch Mufasa again when that comes out since I loved it when I got an advanced screening the other day, and I plan to see Sonic as well

I’ll say right now that I’m honestly not a huge Lord of the Rings fan, while I definitely do respect it for making an impact on our culture, especially with the Peter Jackson movies, I have never really gotten into it myself, and as for this movie I don’t think I’m missing much, while it definitely has some interesting ideas and the animation is really solid, it’s honestly feels poorly executed with a bland story and forgettable and bland characters, and just inferior to other Lord of the Rigs adaptations, not to mention I’ve heard when it comes to the production of this movie it apparently had a short production time and it was rushed out so New Line Cinema could keep the film rights to Lord of the Rings, and I can honestly believe that.

When it comes to my relationship with The Lord of the Rings, like you Mat, I’m not like a major diehard fan but I do like and appreciate them considering that the Peter Jackson trilogy is one of the best trilogy ever made in movie’s history. As for in animation, I haven’t seen the Ralph Bakshi film, but I have seen the Rankin/Bass special of The Hobbit which was amusing to say the least. So for this movie, I was expecting to be good given it being made in anime and after watching it in IMAX, I felt like the movie is on par with The Hobbit trilogy where I find it okay at best. The story was bland, characters were not memorable and dull, the writing was weak, and at times doesn’t feel like The Lord of the Rings in terms of its lore. At least the animation, visuals, action scenes, score, and voice acting were something to admire to make up for it. I feel like this movie was made just so that Warner Bros and New Line Cinema can still keep the rights of the Tolkien novels as it was rushed in production. Not bad but expected something better from this movie.

Admittedly, a series of animes based on legends and historical backgrounds of races, locations and cultures in Middle Earth sounds like an interesting idea of expanding Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth saga and being able to make films without the main actors, but I’m disappointed to hear the execution didn’t work out great with this one. I’m not really interested in seeing this and I’d rather stick with Ralph Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings if I need my animated Lord of the Rings fill, or a better experience involving Helm’s Deep in animation.

So this is the fifth anime movie you put at a 5/10 rating after My Neighbor Totoro, Yokai Watch The Movie, Pokémon The First Movie, And Cleopatra? This is very rare indeed

Yeah I'm on the same page here. Two things, A. I'm not an Anime-guy and B. I too am not into Lord of the Rings either. I haven't seen the films I just don't have the interest with the content of Middle earth. Granted I will state sometime I feel more interest to seeing Bakshi's version after learning from your lookback. But other then that, I hear about this and this is just sad. Usually when it comes to movies the go about for 2 hours, You be thinking the film was made with a lot of time and passion to put in a lot of effort in the story, and just by hearing it... well not, really adds on to the disappointment.

If the running time in this movie is slow, then I’m not gonna waste my money for theaters to see a boringly long movie.

Well I can understand that you can't please everyone and in the movie's defense if you're like me and you get curious to see this and Kraven the Hunter as a double feature DON'T. Incidentally the comparison of Rogue One and LOR:WOR makes me like it more since I enjoyed Rogue One when I first saw it, here's hoping LOR has another story to tell or remake the Hobbit after embarrassing three movies that should have been two movies
