It’s the dawn of a new review as I get to talk about Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. As it is the sequel to the highly beloved Chicken Run, I discover in this review that just because Ginger and Rocky’s last adventure was great, that doesn’t mean we needed a sequel.

As someone who absolutely loves the first Chicken Run, I personally thought this sequel was just ok, not great but not terrible either, it definitely pails in comparison to the original, while I do the the animation is fantastic like the original and the action scenes can be fun, the story just feels weak and the characters just aren’t what they used to be, it also doesn’t help with some of the decisions with the movie, like not bringing back Julia Sawalah as Ginger, while Thandiwe Newton did a good replacement, Sawalah could have easily come back as Ginger and still has the acting chops to pull it off, on top of also having Rocky go from one problematic actor to another, it’s just made things worse. Over while this isn’t a bad sequel, it honestly feels inferior to the original in every way, and it’s probably for the best to just stick to the original.

Since this film doesn’t offer an explanation to Mrs. Tweedy’s survival, I’ll offer my own. She got a free “Get Out of Hell” pass from Kenny who was dumb enough to give it to her since in his mind, “He’s been to Hell many, MANY times before and used his Get Out of Hell Pass, so someone else could use it for a change”. There. That’s my EXPLANATION. Hope you’re satisfied.

If you ask me, while I personally had a positively eventful 2023, it was such a letdown in terms of cinema. Not because we had too many bad movies, but because we didn't get enough great movies. Most of the mainstream ones I've seen and heard of were on average just enjoyable but disappointingly flawed and/or forgettable, and there were only a small few that people will remember for better or for worse. And if the best this year could offer was yet another Spider-Man sequel, Super Mario Bros., a Barbie movie, and a biopic about the inventor of the atomic bomb - all of which were fantastic movies to be fair - then I have no doubt this year sucked for film... I honestly agreed with everything in this review. Part of me hoped this would have the same level of fun, heart and passion as the original, but after going through a whole year of cinematic disappointments both critically and commercially, I shouldn't have raised my expectations too high on this one. Perhaps I was naive to think bringing back the original writer of the first would make a world of difference, but seeing how his recent works weren't all that great (i.e. Smallfoot), I should have known better. I was one of many who wished for a Chicken Run sequel growing up, but over time, I ultimately learned to be careful with what I wished for. Otherwise, I might get it. And it seems I now did... and I am not satisfied. Oh well, let's cross our fingers that no matter what happens, 2024 will be at least a much better year for moviegoers like ourselves ^^

Considering how Mrs. Tweedy was able to survive being inside a machine filled with piping hot gravy that then proceeded to explode, destroying her entire farm, I’m pretty sure surviving being crushed by a door is not much to be surprised about.

I just want to come off and say that I grew up with the first Chicken Run film. Not only did I enjoyed it so much as kid, but it was also the first stop motion animated film and first Aardman film that I watched before checking out other projects from Aardman like Wallace and Gromit and other stop motion animated films years later from childhood to adulthood. When I heard that this sequel was being announced, I was hesitant about this especially how the original ended off on a perfect ending so it hard for me to overlook past that part. Then you have the casting controversy, which I find what Aardman did and even Netflix as they are distributor of this sequel instead of DreamWorks from the first film to be absolutely hypocrites. Bringing back some actors like Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, and even Miranda Richardson were fine and having new replacement like David Bradley as Fowler due to the passing of Benjamin Whitrow is also okay too. I even think replacing Mel Gibson with someone like Zackary Levi as Rocky was also understandable too given how Gibson is now a controversial figure in terms of how he treats the Jewish community recently although Levi is no different as well upon knowing him as a anti vaccinator and going a bit crazy ever since the Shazam 2 bombing but it not as big compared to Gibson. Then you have Ginger herself in which they replace Julia Sawalha with Thandiwe Newton because of agism is an absolute terrible thing to do. What even worst that they not brought back some original actors back again with Miranda Richardson who is not only older than her while hadn’t lose their voice but they even reuse the same footage twice of Ginger saying “Bye Bye” to Mrs. Tweedy of finally escaping the chicken farm with the SAME voice by Sawalha herself compared to the current voice done by Newton for this entire movie. I haven’t talk about my thoughts on this sequel but the latter alone makes it feels more hesitant than ever of checking out this sequel because of the unnecessary aspect and hypocrisy behind the studio’s decision of casting choices. Now that I seen it, I find it okay at best but I also found it to be frustrating at the same time. I give that the animation, some spy elements that pay homages to 60s like Mission Impossible for example, some of the comedy, and voice acting were decent which by the way I do some new actors like Bella Ramsey did okay as well, but the predictable story, weak writing, overused cliches, and some unexplainable choices not just the casting but the lack of explanation of Mrs. Tweedy’s return despite should’ve die from that giant door by Mr. Tweedy at the end of the original film really hurt this movie so much. Overall, I not only is find the sequel unnecessary, but I find it to be Aardman’s weakest work in recent years. I know I’ll definitely stick with the original but man does this frustrated me so much. Again it’s okay but not terrible either. In fact the less I talk about this sequel, the better to avoid so much drama about this film.

Well, I wouldn't say I agree. To say I knew it's was not going to reach the levels of the original, despite I'm a huge fan of it, and while they are some elements I can't say yes to those facts, there a part that say it's as entertaining as much like "Mary Poppins Return" it may be like a copy of the first, but it does put a sense of effort to be different than the original. As on Netflix of this year it's second favorite after Nimona.

I wondered the same thing about Mrs. Tweedy. I really don’t know how she could have survived that barn door squish.

Hunter O'Laughlin

I’m guessing she got a “Get of Hell” pass from a certain kid in an orange hood who frequently uses it every time he gets sent there.

Trenton Girone

Honestly, I loved the first one as well, but Aardman really missed the ball not recasting Julia Sawalha as Ginger. The other guy, I understand.

Bryce Gundy

But either way, I can confidently say that I’ve seen better sequels.

Lady Tyler Bio Rodriguez

Honestly I think it was a little too late to make a sequel. 23 years? Nah.

Bryce Gundy

I still don’t understand the point out to the collar that Frizzle was wearing.

How’s the Best and Worst list coming along?

I was nervous that this was unnecessary, and I guess you were right. I wonder when I have to ask the question. When is a movie ip truly over and when is it necessary for a sequel? I mean that movie was 23 years ago and I think it aged like fine wine (minus the bitter after taste of a certain actor), and when I heard about this sequel I went, "okay?" to "really, you're doing that in this film? You're bringing Mrs. Tweedy?" and now that it is out it is such a disappointment. But when hearing this review, I would say this was a solid analysis. In fact with the characters the way you talked about it in your podcast and showcasing Julia Sawalha in why she still had it and was addressed about some ageism in this review, I would have been on her side as well. But for the other replacement for Rocky, I am Jewish and I am glad they got rid of Mel Gibson cause we don't need that in the industry, let alone having bigots be a part of a family friendly movie. But it does feel like a big d'oh after Zachery Levi made his anti-vaccine comments. It really does not paint a good look on Levi. But even at that I also wonder what is going on with the filmmaking industry when they are not properly addressing plot holes and being clever with them in the writing. Are they really going to rely on nostalgia to carry this? Well it ain't working on me. For one, I do like Mrs. Tweedy cause she was such a good villain, but I mean Mrs. Tweedy was crushed by a barn door and it is addressed that no one knew how she survived? Look I get that this is a movie made for kids and I would never put a movie down like this, but when you have a massive plot hole like that, I will not let it slide. But anyways I hope this is the last film of the year and I can't wait to see the top 5 best and worst films of the year cause I am curious of your overall thoughts Mat, and what to expect for 2024. I will be curious of an upcoming sequel and for you to go "oh no not again, Oh No Not Again, OH NO NOT AGAIN!"
