Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to MHA season 7, episode 1!!! WOW are we kicking things off in a big way! Star and Stripe is so cool, what a total boss babe!!! I love her backstory and how she kinda became an All Might protégé but circumvented the whole One For All thing haha. Her quirk is SO cool!!! And super powerful! We definitely don't want AFO getting a hold of that!!! Overall, this just feels like we're on the precipice of something really big and honestly, sort of a closing/ending for the story...!!!! I can't wait for more! Enjoy! ~ MH

This comment is just going to be about the opening & ending. I love that even though there are cloudy skies at the start of the opening there is light shining through the clouds & there is a theme of light amidst shadow/darkness multiple times in the opening. I love these quick shots of groups of characters/individuals throughout the opening representing different factions with the most prominent characters at the forefront & all of them are works of art. I like the shots of the vestiges, All Might, groups of students & the teachers. The first thing that stood out to me as beautiful is All Might in front of the sunset. Then in the imagery of the students looking serious, determined or sad Mina’s expression stands out to me probably thinking about Midnight’s death. Then there is a shot of the other courses from UA with Mei Hatsume from the support course on her computer. I love the image of Endeavor flanked by Hawks & Mirko because of the lighting. I love that there is a shot of Shinso with Monama because I love his character so it’s great to know we are going to get more Shinso content & considering the location they are in they are most likely going to be acting as heroes in the shadows which they will be very good at with their quirks. The image of Spinner with the remains of the liberation Army probably represents the heteromorph discrimination plot line being set up in this episode & with his back story which is interesting. I can’t wait to find out what his role in the story might be with the image of Kurogiri with Aizawa & Mic. I love getting to see Mirko with a new design complete with mechanical arm/leg & short hair she just looks amazing & badass. I love how the part of Shigaraki being consumed by hands representing AFO with little Tenko at the center does well at showing where Shigaraki is at mentally. The part of the opening that I think is my favorite is the Toga & Uraraka part because I love their relationship with their similarities & differences & the imagery of all the blood on the broken window is just really cool. I like that with Toga it’s blood & then when Uraraka is shown she’s surrounded by plant life which shows that while they have similarities they also contrast each other as foil characters. Also it’s interesting that Ochako almost looks like she is praying. I think the Dabi shot is interesting with a younger Toya assumedly from right after the accident looking to be in anguish & it’s sad that the location of this shot looks like a kid’s room probably his. Near the end of the opening is a part with Bakugo & it looks like he has new equipment and I am very curious about what it does. I love the final part of the opening where all of Class A is helping Izuku through a destroyed city to reach Shigaraki with their quirks because it’s awesome & heartwarming to see the whole class working together and the animation is incredible. I love that while a lot of the song & opening is serious/dark because of the story/characters being at relatively low points the end has an air of hope to it. Also there is a strange shot in the opening of a character in a chair looking out a window & while I can’t recognize them I think it could be Lady Nagant. And now to talk about the ending which I love. With the ending the start of the song is melancholic/sad while the end of it is hopeful/uplifting. I love that this ending reminds us of the origins of heroes & villains. It’s deeply disturbing to me that when Dabi is shown in the ending it looks he is in front of his own shrine dedicated to him that his family made after they thought he died. I love that the heroes are shown as kids & then their older selves appear. I think it represents what gives them their resolve/conviction & also that while they haven’t gotten over the terrible things some of them have gone through in the present they are able to move forward. Also some people wonder why Shoji is one of the heroes in the ending when he isn’t as prominent of a student compared to the other heroes shown but then you remember that he is a heteromorph & will probably have something to do with the discrimination storyline going on with Spinner currently as well as Shoji’s past we basically know nothing about. It’s interesting that it’s only one version of the villains being shown maybe representing that they can’t move forward. I love that the very end of the ending the Sakura blossoms are blooming representing new life/hope/a future happy ending. I don’t want to share the translated lyrics yet because you might not want to know but if you do let me know. I think the instrumentals in the opening are great especially the piano & drums & I agree it’s interesting how the song goes through multiple different styles and you know the singer is talented with the different styles & wide range they have. And the piano & singing in the ending are beautiful. Also I agree the opening feels hopeful, tragic & triumphant that was a great way to describe it. It’s great that you already love the opening & ending because they are both quickly becoming my favorite opening & ending and I think there is an argument that they are one of if not the best opening & ending. I hope you like this deep dive into the opening & ending. I loved your reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

I love this episode so much it’s 1 of the best 1st episodes of a season. I think the line at the end of the 1st scene about overcoming despair with the classic saying hits hard because of how that has become a major theme in the story. I can’t even imagine how hard it must be for these soldiers to just be hearing all this news & see criminals doing whatever they want on live TV. It makes way too much sense that the reason it’s taking a while for reinforcement heroes from other countries is that those other countries are worrying about protecting themselves because of the increase in villain activity around the world. I love Star’s more casual design when she asks the soldiers (and I love that she calls them her brothers) to come with her. I love big women with muscles average & Horikoshi definitely agrees. It’s crazy that AFO is so smart that he has plans for even someone as strong as Star joining the fray & it emphasizes how strong her power is that he doesn’t think his side can’t lose if he has it. Also I appreciate the nod to one of the mangaka’s inspirations for this story American comic books with America being called the birthplace of heroes by AFO which is mostly what the line is about but it could be an expansion of the lore and Cassie having an comic book look with how she is animated. To me it felt like what AFO was trying to do by saying all this stuff to Spinner was give him more motivation, a new cause to fight for as it is very obvious that Spinner is wavering when it comes to helping AFO after last season. This heteromorph discrimination storyline is really interesting not just for his character but since this the introduction of this kind of discrimination in season 5 it was one more example of a flaw in hero society which might lead to the show asking some tough questions again. It’s crazy that the 1st episode hits the ground running with the start of a fight between Shigaraki & Star and learning about her quirk. I love how Shigaraki’s new outfit of the tattered cape over the suit represents the duality of his character being possessed by AFO but also being himself as well as the 2 personalities fighting and mixing together. I think it’s so cool that these highly advanced jets have anti-EMP technology & are acting as platforms for Star. Also before I forget I love how overtly American Star is especially with the fun fact I learned that her birthday is the 4th of July because of course it is LOL. I was very excited to learn that she is voiced by the same VA as Hange which is awesome. Her quirk is over powered & I think it’s 1 of the coolest powers in this show as it gives her a limited form of reality manipulation. Although I think what makes it so powerful is how quickly & cleverly she is able to utilize & come up with ways to use her ability. Also I appreciate the quirk explanation screen has an American flag background. Something interesting about this quirk is how it reflects how some Americans for better or worse tend to enforce their will on the world & people around them. I think Shigaraki having an ability to give himself oxygen is cool. I love how her 1st order creates a giant star in the sky. Yeah, that Star Wars reference with Wedge is great. I think it’s so interesting how Star’s quirk interacts with Shigaraki having 2 souls/minds in 1 body. The imagery of Shiggy and AFO merging is body horror at its finest & psychological horror because of the idea of becoming an entirely new person. It’s never an accident for this show to remind me of Star Wars but the whole hate me more thing immediately made me think of Star Wars. I enjoyed Shigaraki’s analysis of her power especially because it goes into the interesting topic of how perception factors into her quirk. For the most part it sounds like her perception is a main factor but I like how the way someone perceives themselves can make it so her ability doesn’t work. And this specific situation is 1 of the few times where this could happen & I like how the author used this situation to make Star’s already interesting quirk even more interesting. Also this analysis is very much the AFO personality coming out because while Shigaraki has never been a slouch when it comes to analyzing a person’s quirk & how they fight it’s never been to this extent. Star creating a gigantic avatar of herself & wielding lasers as a energy spear is 1 of the coolest & most badass things I have ever seen. I love the little flashback from the soldier with the line from Star about fighting together until death which, connects back to her telling them she would bring back their ashes to their families if they died because it shows how much resolve Star & these soldiers have to put their lives on the line to protect the world. Also the commander she contacts is called Agpar in the subtitles because of copyright the voice acting is Star saying commander Ackbar so that’s another Star Wars reference to add to the list LOL. I think it’s great that the commander truly believes she will surpass her mentor here it shows a lot of mutual respect between them. Also the photo of a young Cassie with All Might is just the sweetest thing. And David Shield being in the photo let’s me transition into talking about Star back story since I didn’t do it earlier. I think it’s so cool that her origin is from the 1st MHA not only because it makes the scene better but it’s also interesting to see Horikoshi make the movie content canon in the manga since I am fairly certain the movie was out long before this manga stuff. It makes me wonder if he was already in the planning stages of creating Star or if he decided to create a character based on those movie flashbacks because enjoyed them since I think for the 1st movie at least he worked on the movie in some capacity. It doesn’t mean the movie itself is canon but it does make the flashback stuff of what All Might did as an exchange student in America as well as David & Melissa Shield canon which I like a lot. Also something cool about the name of the missiles Tiamat is that it’s the name of an ancient Babylonian goddess of the sea & represents the chaos of creation which is very fitting when connected with Star. I agree while it isn’t the last season it feels like the beginning of the end. Yeah, it’s awesome how Star is larger than life like All Might as she is most likely emulating him although I think at this point it’s her own brand of that larger than life persona which I love. Oh yeah the death note comparison is there for sure. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Mirko looks amazing, I'm so happy to see her again! I know, they do great with the visuals showing just how torn Shigaraki is right now. Toga and Uraraka's part really hits different too, considering their dynamic and all the soul searching that Uraraka has done in relation to her. There's for sure a lot of compare/contrast with the plant life vs. blood. Oh she does kinda look like she's praying! Yeah I think I know now why those visuals were there for Toya/Dabi, as of the most recent ep, but that's for later! I know, the whole class coming together to help is a big theme of this season and I'm here for it! The song is really good and that's a good point about how the tone matches the low points vs. the light at the end of the tunnel kind of feeling!

Ohhh I didn't realize that! I agree that the ending provides a nice contrast. Yeah the shot of Dabi is dark. I think that's a great way to sum up the way our heroes are looking at their past selves! Ohhh that's an interesting point about Shoji too, that actually makes a lot of sense! Awww yeah, maybe it's showing the villains can't grow/change/move foward. The sakura blossoms are always a nice touch and they have a great meaning don't they!!
