Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to the first three eps of Tales of the Empire! I love that we're getting a backstory and rise-to-power story of Morgan Elsbeth! That was a really good call, and it was so well done. Thrawn's presence just steals the show as well! How ironic that Morgan would come full circle in her story - starting with everything on fire, and ending with being the one who set it all on fire. :( I'm really excited to see the next story as well! Great stuff! Enjoy! ~ MH

1x1: I'm glad we got these shorts to flesh out Morgan Elsbeth's character more, and to see why she dedicates herself to the ideals of the Empire and Thrawn. The droids came to wipe out the Nightsisters after Mother Talzin messing around with Dooku after all that happened with Ventress; but yes the Mountain Clan didn't know that, so its understandable that some of the younger members were fearful. I suppose they are also curious about Elsbeth being from that other clan so are more ready to listen to her warnings that the droids could also come for them. I can understand entirely why Elsbeth wants revenge, but she had a chance to see things in another way from what the Mountain Clan Mother said and did; but, even after seeing what her actions brought, she wasn't ready to listen and instead went down this destructive path. Violence begets violence. Its true in real life as it is in Star Wars (which at its best should be taken as an entertaining way to teach kids - and some adults! - life lessons). Its why Yoda can't beat Sidious in Revenge Of The Sith; going head on was the wrong way. Luke trying to bring his father back to the light instead of trying to kill him and Sidious is another way to bring around the downfall of all this, and Anakin eventually does through love for his son. We've seen what happened to Maul (also from Dathomir and Mother Talzin's son) by living his whole life filled with hate and revenge. This will happen to Elsbeth. On a side note, its good seeing Grievous again. I kind of love him, even when he's cackling away (and running away!). Without the shackle of Lucas wanting him to be a more comic villain, Filoni here gave the fans more of what he should have been; truly threatening and formidable. His laughing in the background is haunting during the destruction, and we see that Elsbeth still hears it later when looking into the fire. Also the animation is indeed fantastic Melissa. I hear people in other reactions speak about the dirt in Morgan's hand looking realistic, but I also loved the way the tears ran down her face. Season 3 of Bad Batch had an upgrade, and it looks to be in full effect here, as even the scanning of the models in the intro, have been touched up (and yes there are some new models including Crosshair). Gorgeous.

1x2 : I love this episode, seeing Thrawn seek out Elsbeth and begin their relationship. And the way they want to shape the galaxy when the time is right. So we never knew the TIE Defender was a concept by Elsbeth, though Ahsoka does mention in her Mandalorian episode that Elsbeth built fleets for the Empire, so we see the background of some of that here, and the devastation it will cause this village and Corvus as those fleets start getting built. I love how this episode ties in Rebels, Mando and Ahsoka seeing Rukh (and Hera definitely held her own against him judging by this fight!), Thrawn, Palleon, Corvus and the Defender. Its all very satisfying seeing it all come together. The dulcet tones of Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn, is a feast on the ears. What a voice. The Mikkelsen's are too damn cool! I like how his design here more reflects Lars appearance than he was in Rebels, to better line how he looks later in Ahsoka, and we also hear just what he thinks of the Empire, what it currently is with its power yet weakness, and what he thinks it should be. All very interesting stuff as we push forward in the Mando timeline with him back. I wonder if we'll ever delve into the reasons for himself signing up with them, as the earlier novels suggest that its for a very good reason and why he might be an anti-hero. And I believe you have read some Thrawn novels Mel, so will be better clued up on that, than I.

1x3: While the New Republic is obviously better than the Empire, the naivety bordering on ignorance of the threat that is still out there, is frustrating though realistic. They dismantle their fleets when the Empire has not yet been fully extinguished, and its sparks like here with Elsbeth and Thrawn, and later with the First Order lot, that will cause a lot of devastation to come. Senators like Xiono (the argumentative senator in Ahsoka) are fools, but will be what bog down Mon Mothma's government, undermining her, just like Palpatine did all those years ago with Chancellor Valorum and the Republic. A message offering membership for Corvus should have been sent in first. Yes Morgan would have ignored it, and the people wouldn't be any wiser. However they could have gone about it another way to try to free these people and it would have avoided this; though there is always hope when the distress call gets answered and Wing finds his courage. I just found out that the city here on Corvus, is called Calodan. As if Star Wars doesn't rip off Dune enough, seeing that the home planet of House Atreides there, is Caladan!! :D Anyway Elsbeth is now "burned" into her plan fully, and will stop at nothing to bring about the return of Thrawn to rebuild this Empire in the way she hoped "to save the Galaxy". And she'll die alone in another galaxy not knowing if her path was all worth it. He does return, but we will see how that will play out. I wonder why the distress call was picked up by Bo-Katan? Is Corvus in the Mandalorian Sector perhaps? Anyway that furthers the link from the Mando series and solidifies her connection with Ahsoka (and I love hearing a few brief notes of Ahsoka's Theme here), who will free these worlds from Morgan's tyrannical rule - though perhaps may doom the galaxy with all that is to come. Of course these shorts are just snippets of stories, of which we'd all love more; but since this came out of the blue and no one knew anything about this series, we'll certainly take it! Also, with Bad Batch finished we yet have no news on any more Star Wars animation. I'm sure they are developing something, as the amount of work gone into how good this is all executed now (we are a long way from the Clone Wars movie with this engine now!), suggests they aren't done and surely will announce a new series, or mini-series shortly.

That was dark. But wow that was incredible. That end was so heartbreaking after that little speech. There’s definitely something poetic about this one. I hate to say it but that was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

kamenriderhime

It really was!!! I agree about the ending, and yes there's something really tragic and poetic about it for sure! LOL the pun works though!!!

kamenriderhime

Same!! Right, I remembered that they got wiped out during Clone Wars, but yeah, the mountain clans wouldn't have known that. So true, her actions were understandable but she had a choice to make on what she gave power to. I couldn't agree more about the valuable life lessons! We've seen it so many times throughout Star Wars, so true. Seeing Grievous laughing and running away was such a treat! He was definitely a bit more sinister he wasn't he! I'm glad you agree about the animation!! The tear scene was so well done. You can definitely see how they've leveled up at this point, after series like Bad Batch!!!

kamenriderhime

I agree, seeing their partnership forming is so interesting. Ohhh I was wondering if they'd mentioned that before about her designing the TIE Defender! I guess it was somewhat implied then. OMG it was crazy seeing Rukh!!! It is really satisfying to see everything get connected together. I couldn't agree more about the Mikkelsens!!! He's just so iconic as Thrawn. I did notice that the appearance is more similar to what we saw in Ahoska, which is a nice touch. I read a few of the Thrawn novels but still need to read the last one! I'll be very curious to see if they include any kind of backstory for him canonically in the future!

I’m watching this while chilling in the airport a few days late, so I’ll just put a few tidbits down: First, if there’s ever anything in the credits it will always be before the Lucasfilm / Lucasfilm Animation end logo just like Bad Batch. Oh look, Dave’s at it again. Do you remember the quote? They clearly were going for the dark side line of fear anger and hatred… and it all leads to suffering. Honestly, considering where Morgan ended up perhaps it would’ve been better if she met the fate of her tribe at the hands of Grievous… do you remember I asked if he was secretly the first rebel leader because of the whole Separatist thing? XD The second episode reveals that Thrawn’s TIE design was in fact, Morgan’s to begin with - but nobody cared to look twice because of the cost. It’s the same reason they replaced clones with stormtroopers. Also, Thrawn was always very uh… CALM. His heart isn’t beating fast but everyone else’s is. “Is that who I think it is or am I crazy?” Me: Can I choose both? 😉 The third episode reveals just how callous Morgan became since the start but it is also kind of a bit of a prequel. I’m going to remind you that Ahsoka showed up in an episode of The Mandalorian (I think it was S1?), specifically to confront Morgan. The voice on the com link before Morgan crushes it is Bo-Katan. You might want to rewatch that episode, it’s been a while, with the added context. Also I believe Wing did something to assist Mando. It’s been too long. Is the intro different? Ask yourself one question: do you see Chopper or don’t you? I’ll be playing catch up for a bit, but will try to be back on schedule soon as possible! 😁

kamenriderhime

I do remember the quote, I think it's clever the way they used it here. Oof, Grievous being the first rebel leader is quite the thought! It's a cool detail that Morgan was the one who first invented the TIEs. I already know I'm crazy, I don't really need your confirmation at this point. :P That was Bo-Katan?! WOW!! I do remember that episode of Mando but it's been a while. I thought I did see Chopper, but maybe it was just wishful thinking. No rush on the comments!

kamenriderhime

This is such a great and accurate way to describe the New Republic! While their intentions are good, there's still an awful lot of the bureaucratic ignorance that gets in their way the way it did with the Empire. It is very similar to the dynamic we saw with the Republic back in Episode I. The more things change, the more they stay the same, I suppose! OMG!! That's so fun about the Dune reference!!! That would actually make a lot of sense if this tied into the Mando series! I didn't even realize that was Bo-Katan, that's so awesome! I'm so glad they randomly gave us this series! I think you're right about the animation, we certainly are far ahead from that first movie lol! So I'm sure they'll give us something at some point. Here's hoping!!!

I missed this on the schedule, this is nice surprise. The Star Wars intro is different, it changes a little bit for each of the shows, and it’ll only show animation or live action characters depending on which you’re watching. So apparently Grievous returning to finish off the Nightsisters was one of the Clone Wars arcs we never got cause of the show being canceled originally, neat that they reused it for Morgan’s backstory. And man, we REALLY got to see how terrifying Grievous can be when he’s not going against our Clone Wars crew, easily the most intimidating he’s been in current canon. Also, HOLY CRAP THIS TEAM IS INSANE! That shot of Morgan clenching her fist in the dirt is unbelievable, the dirt looks so real! Really interesting to learn that the TIE Defender was actually Morgan’s idea and not Thrawn’s. I’m wondering what the thought process was for that addition, cause all through Rebels it’s regarded as Thrawn’s TIE Defender program. Don’t hate it, just find it interesting. Also holy crap the choreography and animation for the fight with Ruhk was amazing! And then we get part 3. Now Corvus is much more like how we first saw it in Mando s2. And it seems at this point the High Mothers (or whatever they’re called) have already made contact with Morgan from Peridia, as she says she’s “had a vision”. And from the end of the episode it seems that Bo Katan pointed Ahsoka in the direction of Corvus which was a little surprising, I expected Ahsoka herself to answer the distress call. Really excited for the last 3 episodes, such an insane comeback in the same year we also got someone else in Bad Batch!

kamenriderhime

I'm glad you liked it! Yeah they like to change up the intro. Ohhh interesting about the never-seen story from CW! OMG isn't the animation absolutely insane in quality?! It was a cool note about the TIE Defender. Loved the choreography too, they killed it on visuals here. So glad we got to see Ruhk! That's so cool that it was Bo Katan answering, but yeah, I could've seen it being Ahsoka too, interesting call. Hope you love the last three eps! Isn't it amazing we got this and Bad Batch in the same year!!
