Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to ep 9 of season 2 of Oshi no Ko! WHOA!! First off, just where do they get off making me bawl in the first five minutes?! That sequence of Aqua using his past to fuel his performance was even more gut-wrenching than I expected. It was awful to watch him use the pain/rage of losing Ai, but somehow it was also super sad to watch him use the hope of what would've happened if she'd lived!! I really hope this is planting some seeds for him to try and heal from it! Meanwhile, the play is a huge success and we're getting back to the mystery at hand....and WOW just what the fudge are they doing leaving me on a cliffhanger like having a HALF BROTHER?!?!?!!? What on earth could this mean?! I have some thoughts but I'm not sure if any of them will be true. Guess we'll find out! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Hime :) And there you have it, I said that I unfortunately spoiled myself last time, here is part of it, I knew that Himekawa was Aqua's half-brother, I also know the identity of their father and his personality. You're probably going to have a lot more emotion with the next episodes to come (I know roughly what they're going to talk about) so stay on your guard, because it might be whiplash on whiplash. Also, to continue on the Kana/Akane relationship, I find it funny that each calls the other a genius and considers themselves losers in this "battle". It shows how much they esteem their rival but also their inferiority complex. Put them both in a room for 24 hours so that they tell each other everything they have on their hearts and that they become friends lol.

And guess what? No episode next week because of product issues . So two weeks.

“I absolutely cannot break down crying today.” Me: This is not a battle that you have any chance of winning… 😅 In fact, I’m going to diagnose you with a severe case of OshiNoKoItis. Just to prove that you lost this fight before it even started, we start with a Ai flashback. I mentioned this in my rather late comment last week, but Ai is also a Japanese word for “love,” straight up. It’s interesting that Ai is nothing but encouraging after Aqua’s scary film debut, which is the exact opposite of the advice Gotanda gave him after figuring out his intent. Speaking of that, Aqua’s applying everything he’s been bottling up just as he was told - Himekawa is a bit too close to the scene to react, and Akane is currently “playing dead” but Kana is awestruck by the shift in his tone, as she’s not privy to the same information Akane had previously put together and it’s a surprise to her. It seems like Dr. Gorou (Aqua’s previous incarnation) has manifested inside his mind as a sort of “dark conscience” obsessing on vengeance, and Aqua is a bit bemused because he also had to endure that emotional trauma without being able to do anything about it. He’s channeling it in a way it can be projected. I do feel like it would’ve been interesting to see at least one shot of Ruby during this part just to see if she read anything into it. I feel like that might’ve been a missed opportunity character wise, but I don’t know how the manga handled it either. Ironically enough, the play ends with a miracle restoration of Akane’s character, which causes Aqua to reach into a different emotional pocket, the one that would do anything to see Ai again - so his imagination seems to construct a bit of a parallel universe where she survives. (On a completely unrelated note, Ai’s VA is the one wizard who’s always yelling Explosion! In Konosuba - so that’s a fun fact. I was trying to figure out if I could hear the similarity in the voice she was using here.) Even Akane’s face seems a little shocked when she “revives” at how hard Aqua is diving into this role. Akane sees some of her friends from the dating show afterwards and she’s embarrassed when they praise her performance - she feels she’s way behind both Himekawa and Kana - which is ironic, because Kana’s a) freaking exhausted, and b) completely overwhelmed by how good Akane was. I actually can relate a bit to this sort of feeling - the really good creative artists feel like they’re always lacking compared to others. It’s something kind of like humility, but it’s more like - I’m just doing what I normally do, why do you all think it’s so special? But thanks anyway. Oh yeah, and Kana has to deal with her idol work on top of this performance run. She seems to think Akane’s acting triggered Aqua’s uninhibited emotional performance, and is feeling a bit down because she hasn’t gotten to that level, not understanding the situation that’s leading to that result. Kusuragi and Kindaichi are both pleased with how the play’s first night turned out, given how much of a hodgepodge schedule they had for rehearsing (and that was before the whole rewriting arc started in the first place). Kusuragi is actually quite surprised at the reveal that Kana still has actual talent, leading to a discussion about why girls in their industry stand out. It’s also given him some ideas about how he might use this opportunity. Other than that, the actor to watch us… they don’t tell us. But the pan up was definitely centering on Aqua’s poster. Raida is pleased watching the audience leave with pleased looks. I guess you could say he’s kind of using them sort of like reaction videos? :P Aqua’s been busy, it seems he’s collected DNA from quite a few members of the Lala Lai theater company and is looking a little disheveled after looking at the results he’s collected. We have an extended montage of the curtain call which is referred to in the opening, but it’s interesting that some of the rivals are paired together as they take their stage bows. Also I don’t know if you picked up on this, but Aqua doing a Princess carry of Akane during their acknowledgment had a rather not so subtle effect on Kana… I should also note that they’ve just announced their putting this stage play arc into an actual stage production in Japan for the end of the year. Abiko seems overjoyed at the production result, which makes GOA happy. Somehow they managed to pull this off. Seems like going out after a performance is a big thing with theater companies, and Akane’s on top of it at a moment’s notice. Kindaichi is also invited - he declines at first but caves in after some prodding. This is a signal to Aqua to pry further and he goes along - Kana was going home to rest but when she heard Aqua was going she sure did a quick 180. Subtle she is not. 😆 Which leads me to a question, can you get drunk on ginger ale? Also it’s a bit of a nice callback because Akane is cooking the yakinaku again, just like she did the first time we met her formally - before all the cyber bullying started - remember she said she’d never give up the tongs. Kindaichi praises Aqua’s improvement at the end scene, and Aqua starts to ask a few questions. Turns out the director is one of the founding members of the company and makes the comment to get better they used a number of people they got through their workshops. He then calls it a “blunder” - but he refuses to elaborate further. Himekawa chimes in and offers to take him for more drinking. The place they’re taken to is a spot many idols and models frequent because they can’t cover costs at their actual job (this was actually a topic covered in Season 1 when Ruby was dead set on the idol career.) Unfortunately their plan backfires as they get Kindaichi too drunk - he mutters a few things about Himekawa’s upbringing and the reason both he and Aqua’s acting resonates - because there’s an understanding of the actual pain behind it. As Kindaichi sleeps it off, Aqua decides to drop the bomb - which is cue to start the end theme - that they’re half siblings. As for Kindaichi’s involvement in this, remember the reason Aqua took this job was to investigate the company. The implications are that this “blunder” is somehow tied to their dad. I am not reading ahead but I don’t think it’s him - it’s more likely he’s got knowledge of what actually occurred but he’s not under any obligations to share it. Also there will be an episode next week being released. But it sounds like it’s going to be a recap episode. The studio has been working overtime on both this and another top anime this season, “Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian.” So it’s more likely they just, like Kana, needed a bit of a breather. Just when you think this isn’t layered enough, right? Like I said in last week’s episode - no wasted movement. 😉 “You’re just gonna drop that bomb on me and walk away!?” It’s pretty much what they do, ya know? 😂

Tyler Stobbe

Not completely correct, they will be releasing a recap episode next week. So they aren’t pulling the MHA cold Turkey treatment.

Hello Melissa, I adored this episode so much. It was like i was taken back to episode 1 of the 1st season. Still miss Ai so much & aqua showed how much hes hurting still inside. His past self is still haunting him, reminding him he cant find happiness anywhere be it Kana or Akane. His only goal should be to take the revenge route and nothing else. Aqua embracing the ptsd and replies with the regret he has and how things could have been different if ai lived that day and lets out his emotions like a water dam. Aqua still loves her the most out of anyone and its beautiful <3 After the play Akane is praised by her friends while Kana receives compliment from Ruby on how she is truly a great actor through & through. But both Kana and Akane decline on being geniuses and show respect to each others acting skills even though being rivals & wanting to improve further than each other. Kinda wholesome tbh, love their Dynamic <3 Outside we see the directors discussing the play and the actors prowess. I found it interesting how kaburagi described kanas acting powers as a form of lie (which is similar to star eyes i guess? ) to attract others and calling it a star factor. So maybe she has it too but its another variant i suppose? Then he calls her the real deal and started laughing creepily which weirded me out (also him calling her cute and all). While director kindaichi director was amazed by akanes last performance and also hes curious about something? wonder what. Anyways Raida is happy seeing peoples reaction while coming out of the theatre. His hard worked paid off. Finally the theatre group goes for a small party hangout. Aqua of course tagged along cause he has his main objective, apparently he has gathered everyones hair somehow for dna testing (bro how did you do it?). Kana tags along as well after denying and akane the introvert enjoying it as well surprisingly. Aqua gets close to kindaichi since he has the most history details on lalalai but hits a wall, surprisingly himekawa offers to help him out with the use of some adult drinking sessions in a hostess bar where unsuccessful actress and idols work and its a good place for industry people who want to chill without getting attention which is understandable & convenient. Taiki is into cute girls, i respect that. Anyways we get bit more of serious taiki background, after being raised in an orphanage he was taken in by kindaichi later, whos like a father figure to him similar to how gotanda is to aqua. Also this isnt the only thing similar between them as aqua and taiki share a lot of other things as well. The reason gets dropped like a bomb as apparently through the dna reports aqua finds out that Himekawa is his Half brother since they share same fathers. Now will aqua finally get all the info he wants from him regarding our mysterious dad? Cant wait for the juicy details.

Oh that's good to know! If it's all the same, I might skip the recap ep and save that time for trying to catch up on editing. I've gotten quite behind on everything this week :(

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Aww I'm sorry you got spoiled!! Omg not even more emotion!! It's so interesting to examine the inner workings of Akane/Kana isn't it! I could totally see them bonding quickly under the right circumstances!

kamenriderhime

Hey Leonie! I couldn't agree more! It's so sad and emotional to see Aqua's raw emotions over losing Ai!! He definitely is holding onto this so much and his love is sooo strong!! I thought that little moment with Kana and Akane was so nice and wholesome too!!! I could definitely see them being friends! Yeah it was interesting how he was describing that star power right? The creepy laugh was, well, a little creepy lol. Yeah what was it about Akane that piqued his interest? It's so sweet to see Raida get the payoff for all this in the form of watching people come out! OMG for real, he is SO sneaky with all these DNA samples, like what the heck haha! The plan with the bar was clever right!! It didn't quite work but oh well haha. Also interesting to see Taiki's tastes lol! OMG I couldn't believe the info about them being half brothers!!! What id Himekawa doesn't know anything about his dad??? He was in an orphanage after all. I guess we'll find out!!

kamenriderhime

Starting off with Ai was cruel but so good! It's interesting that the other voice is the doctor he was in the previous life! Also wild that Ai is Megumin!!! Interesting thoughts about Akane and Kana and their scene here after the play too. Lol Raida loves his reaction videos! I'm so glad this all went well! Kana insisting on going after Aqua says he'll go was so cute! HAHAHA I love the whole people-getting-drunk-on-a-placebo-drink trope, it never gets old! I guess they have brought that up about idols before, that it can be tough to pay the bills. I missed it last week but I'm about to go watch the new ep now! Can't wait to see what's going on!!!

"You make me crazy....." gah....Kana is SO in love with him (Aqua) still....the love triangle continues.

This episode just dropped in English this week and I watched it last night then raced back over here to rewatch this reaction and it did not disappoint. I appreciate your authenticity, which is why I keep watching along with you. I also just started watching the new English dub for Insomniacs After School on HIDIVE, which is a slow burn romance I adored in Japanese sub and I'm so happy it's getting this new English dub and plan to get it on BluRay when they (Sentai Filmworks) release it on home video.
