Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to the long awaited Vol. 8 soundtrack!!!  So many great ones on here, and I think that overall this soundtrack matches the heavier tone of Vol. 8 really well, while still reminding us of all the great things we're still fighting for.  :)  We had e real hard-hitting, fast rock songs that help put us in the right mindset for the crazy situations we've faced this volume...and we also have some positive tracks about Nora cutting herself some slack, and some nice general romance/love vibes.  Of course, the standout for me is "Friend" :')  And I'm glad I could at least keep it together enough to pay some more attention to the lyrics this time around haha.  All in all, it was worth the wait - another great soundtrack in the books!  Can't wait for Vol. 9!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Thanks again for the playlist and notes Tyler!  And Sirs & Madams - excellent work on the lyric videos!!!!!!!!!!

"Awake" as your notes mentioned is a stand alone from the band Casey is in with her Berklee classmates. The song is also released with their most recent EP titled "Limbo." Its a mix of a couple thing though music services probably classify it under Prog Rock since they do a lot of things with time signature changes and lots of filled musical space. The other thing is a some of the other band members (notably Martin Gonzalez and Martin deLima) helped craft the actual score (so if you grab spotify you'll notice their names along with Alex for the score tracks). All of which is to say that they have two really awesome EPs out there that are worth giving a listen to. Now...the shipping reference with notes on "Treasure" ... okay let me start with the fact that the song plays most notably when Blake and Yang reunite as they are the only Partners who reunite in the scene where it plays (Ren and Nora don't reunite until the next episode and all the other partners haven't been split). It also contains lots of piano cues that are Blake reminiscent so as a song about those two finally re-uniting is a prominent read. Ren and Nora obviously do reunite and given the fact that we haven't had a Ren song yet there is a fair read to believe that the lack of obvious musical cues could mean this is his first viewpoint song. At the same time the song starts when Ruby and Yang re-unite and the two of them obviously had the biggest falling out and coming back together. So yes it is intentionally vague and includes almost none of the usual character nods that occur in other RWBY songs, At the same time given the timing of when it plays I'm firmly in the camp that its a Blake/Yang song from Blake's perspective...but again it is not the only read and the shipping debate is secondary to how beautiful of a song it is.

And immediately after this video was posted, Melissa was found on the iTunes Store… “This is our lowest point.” Well, yeah. After all, they fell really far. 😂 /ducks The lyrics in the first two songs do have me wondering if Team RWBY + Friends did experience a sort of “death” because they all looked “Thanos snapped” as they fell. But this being anime, “death” has many different meanings, not all of which are irreversible. MY personal theory is that they’ve been “snapped out of existence” and have to recover their physical forms on Remnant somehow before they run out of time to do so: after all, they were told the consequences for falling would be dire so this isn’t an easy fix. One thing I forgot to mention: There’s a line in “For Every Life:” “Some heroes choose the wrong side.” It might be a direct poke at Ironwood: he had the character song “Hero” in Volume 7, if you recall. And, well, we all know what happened with THAT character. 👀 No Volume 9 News yet to report but I have a feeling it’s not gonna be too long…

Oooft this soundtrack was worth the wait in my opinion! It definitely makes me yearn for V9 even more, but again I'm sure CRWBY will come through despite the wait of it. Now something interesting is that this volume's soundtrack much like V7's seems to be more up to interpretation again with only one or two songs centered around a specific character/pair/group. And I kind of like that, it makes the listener think about the song and whom it may apply to which then forces us to pick up on specific musical cues and such. Which I personally find really fun. Now onto the songs themselves; by far my third favourite opening song, Every Life definitely encompasses the overall feeling that V8 invokes. Hopelessness. We've felt the pain of being blindsided by the enemy in V3, we've felt the slow burn of healing in V4, the desire to prevail in face of everything that may stop us in V5, picking ourselves back up and coming back even stronger in V6 and the hope for the future in V7... but we have never felt something like this. Our heroes have never been beaten down so bad before, never lost as much as they have in this volume... never failed in such a way before. And yet, even while they have their doubts, even when they know they may have failed in what they initially set out to achieve, even though the day they feared seems to have arrived - there's still that desire to protect people, do everything they can until they physically can't do anything anymore. Do anything they can to help preserve and protect every life. And if that doesn't scream our heroes than I don't know what else does. Another rock banger, and another song emphasizing the general mindset of our characters. But it's interesting to note that some people are thinking that Sky is Falling is an Oscar/Ozpin song, I honestly could see it with some of the lyrics in mind. It could be shifting between perspectives with Oscar feeling like his whole world is falling around him, and Ozpin feeling the regret and other such emotions. There's also the notion that "falling further down the hole" and "sky is falling" are references to the story Oz is always talking about in V8 - 'The Girl Who Fell Through the World'. Also it's just funny to think about the lyric "I need therapy" in context of Oscar who was put through the ringer in V8. #OscarProtectionSquad. It's only natural that my favourite song on the soundtrack is the Nora song, the queen she is! (People like to say it could also be an Emerald song but the musical cues are typically Nora's - but with the lyrics you could stretch it that way too). But in all honesty in a soundtrack full of more morbid songs this one was a nice change of pace. And of course it was an absolute banger, with a beautiful message. As someone who was in a rough place for a while a long time ago, this song resonates so much with me as did Nora's character arc in V8. It was hard to see but necessary, because its true that no one can love you more than you love yourself and, in the words of Ru Paul, "if you can't love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love anybody else". I'm so glad we got this song, because it does seem like an introspective Nora's doing on herself and I'm just so genuinely happy for her and where she's heading. And what the future has in store for her and later on, her and Ren. Peppy and empowering, exactly how I'd describe Be Strong and Hit Stuff and Nora. The Truth "is that no one's ever loved you". I wonder how different Cinder would've been if she was put into an actual loving family as opposed to the Stepmother's. This one just plucks at all my heartstrings. It's important to note that Treasure contains alot of Blake's musical cues with the piano and strings. And at certain parts it sounds very similar to a previous ballad we've had in V5, 'All that Matters' where it was Yang's conflicted feelings about Blake. And in saying that Treasure could be (I don't know the correct terminology for it but) a sequel song of sorts - Blake's own feelings on Yang while she's gone and as she reappears her mindset here directly opposing the mindset Yang had in All that Matters. And while it could also be a Renora song, like a another commenter has stated, it played upon the reunion of both Yang and Ruby, as well as Blake and Yang. But because of the romantic undertones I personally feel like it is Blake about Yang. But to put all that to the wayside, I think that it is good and important that this song is ambiguous on purpose, because its true that we had alot of people who cared about each other separated from one another but they all had faith in eachother that everything would be okay when they got back together. This song is so genuinely gorgeous, and I think a nice song to have on a soundtrack full of rock and sullen songs. A moment of calm before all the crazy, just like it was in the show. I hope you'll forgive me skipping Friend, I've listened to that song with you when your individual reaction came out and again later on, and it destroyed me and with family present I'd rather avoid questions on why I'm sobbing like a mad woman. But I'm sending virtual high fives for you being willing to listen it through again! And I actually really adore that Jeff added Casey's band's song to the soundtrack! Like not only is that great exposure for the band but that's just a really cool and supportive thing to do. Not to mention the song was sick! Cinderella's revenge indeed. But yeah! I knew you'd enjoy this soundtrack even if some of them were a little more brooding than others, and it was amazing to hear your thoughts and feelings after waiting so long. And I hope you don't mind reading mine, sorry I ended up writing way more than I meant too. Anyways, excellent reaction as per usual and I hope you have a good rest of your day/night!

I love your headphones 🎧 lol you said we shouldn't be surprised if one day you pop up with cat ears; in the Demon Slayer reaction you said "let's do this" and next thing you know BOOP Cat ears appear on your head! I love it 🐈😻 And sweet shout out to Zamber! ✊ ❤

kamenriderhime

Ohhh thanks for the info, I'll have to go check out their other song as well! I'm glad I guessed right on the prog rock thing! Whoa, very cool about the score as well! Ah yes I see what you mean about how it could be taken as a Yang/Blake song as well, or even interpreted other ways! I like that there's good evidence for multiple ships so we can all enjoy it no matter who we're shipping! (I ship Ren/Nora and Yang/Blake the most, so I like that it fits well with them haha.) It's a gorgeous song! Thanks for the info!

kamenriderhime

Ahhh thank you!!! Total accident that I ended up wearing them, and, little techie sidebar....turns out my pc recorded no audio on the screencapture because of them so I had to go re-record all the songs :O :O :O Hahah!!! But I'm so glad you like them!!! And yes, totally true that BOOP there they were, cat ears!!!! I love Zamber, isn't she awesome??? So glad you enjoyed my Kitty Hime time ^_^

kamenriderhime

Hahah yup, that's always where I head as soon as the camera goes off on a soundtrack reaction! LOL!!!!!! Dang, you are on fire with the Yang jokes today!!!! Hmm, that's a good point about the death line. I think you're onto something with them being outside existence and/or our physical realm in some way. I read a theory that they're in the "land of the dead" and I really liked that considering we might get to see cameos from Pyrrha, Roman, and heck even all our characters who died at the end of this volume :/ Ahhhh yes, I was totally thinking Ironwood during that line! Good lyrical jab :P Yeah I feel like now that the soundtrack is out, it won't be long until Vol. 9!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spadeas

Hi Hime :) The first time I read the lyrics of "for every life", the things I have in mind was : Fan - How many tribute to other opening we will have ? Jeff - Yes. Even if the song is dark, I couln't help myself to smile as every tribute to the past opening and the fact that the last tribute was "this will be the day", so the first opening, is beautiful. The fact that "Be strong and hit stuff" has no resolution musicaly, to point out that her path is not over, is a genious idea. The "do hugs always fell this warm" will never be old and hit me again and again forever I thinks. Not so much to say, but the OST is young and I haven't listened to it enough to see all the details yet.

kamenriderhime

Totally!!! And yes, it's interesting to have the themes be a bit more vague as it leaves more room for introspection and theories!!! Yes, the first two songs are such good summations of all the pain in this volume! Good call about Oscar as well, definitely very physical pain in his case too, sadly. Protect Oscar!!!!!!!!!! Yes, love the way it can be applied to the Girl who Fell through the World as well!!! And LOL that line just sums up everything! I loved Nora's song!!! I got a little bit of Emerald vibes too, from all the talk about redemption, but agree that it definitely fits Nora best!!! Nora is a true queen!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry you went through a hard time, and I'm glad this song resonated with you! I definitely felt that as well :D It's sad for sure about Cinder....she truly has known no real caring her entire life. Emerald is probably the only one and I'm afraid Cinder might be too closed off by now to accept any of her feelings. Yes, great observations about Treasure!!! There are definitely hints towards multiple relationships in there!! Omg, I TOTALLY get skipping Friend, tbh I kinda wanted to skip it myself haha!!! I will say that hearing it a third time (first time being in the end credits), I was able to get through it without breaking down too hard. But yeah, definitely don't do that to yourself if you'd prefer not to lol. I LOVE reading your thoughts, thank you so much for sharing them! And I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction!!!! Have a wonderful rest of your day/night as well!!!!!!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) OH!!! I love that this opening has tributes to the other openings! Not sure if I even realized that until you mentioned it! Ohhhhhhhhhh that's why Be Strong and Hit Stuff ended that way - that is genuis!!! Oh yeah, that line will always get me too. I hope you enjoy listening to the soundtrack over and over - I know I will!!! Thanks so much!
