Hey everyone! Here's my reaction and review of episode 25 of the final season of AoT! WOW!!!! Who knew that an episode of all talking could be so intense and interesting!!!
It was heartbreaking in all the best and worst ways to watch everyone sit around a meal and just talk about all the unbelievable ways in which both sides have hurt each other. Yelena wasn't really helping lol, but ultimately I think it does help that we've talked this out - as hard as it was. Jean is seriously an amazing character!!! And it was great to see all the stuff that happened behind the scenes, so to speak. And now, looks like we've got another life-threatening situation to deal with, sheesh!!!! Can't wait to see what happens next! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

First thing I notice: when Jean is daydreaming at the start, his wife sure looks a lot like Mikasa…. There’s a lot of conundrum going on with the Paradis Island side of the cast: Jean knows he could have everything he wants if he does nothing, and the others would all get what they want if they let Eren carry out his plan. Hange is getting to the crux of the matter, however - and none of them are too keen on genocide. This episode could probably also have been called “Regrets.” Just about every character here is responsible for something horrific. I think what the author is trying to convey here is that if you think this is as simple as one side is right, one dude is wrong: that’s being hypocritical. Yes, Wren’s on a rampage. But what have all these people done? Regarding Yelena’s motivation, I think she might be somewhat of an anarchist - although I’m not sure that’s the right word. Someone who’s so utterly disgusted with the actions of her country that she’s actively seeking to undermine it. She makes a good point, though, that no one’s really brought up: Armin is generally considered to be one of the purer, “heroic” characters in the show, yet, his body count is probably second or third highest on the list. It doesn’t matter that he didn’t want to do it at the time: he still did it. And yet, the first thing people gravitate towards is the person who killed a single character important to them. But the thing is, nobody’s life is unimportant. Everyone says they want Justice - they’re going about it in different ways. But if you’re talking true Justice here, do any of these characters deserve to escape their fates after everything they’ve done? It’s a philosophical quandary, and the show is pretty good at backing the audience into a proverbial corner. The villains are not completely wrong, and the heroes are not completely right. You can’t call Eren a villain straight up without letting the other characters look in the mirror as well. (I still think we need to see what the Titans do when they make landfall first.) But anyway: The difference here is the weight of each character’s actions on themselves. For example, did Reiner deserve to get beat down by Jean for that move? Technically speaking, yes. Didn’t make it right for him to do it. But do you think that beat down feels any worse to him than the way Reiner’s been punishing himself? The same could be said for Annie, Armin, Gabi, Hange, well, pretty much everyone. They’re all stacked by their own guilt. On the other side, Floch doesn’t seem to care about anything he does. That’s what the difference is. One side has a conscience. Speaking of Eren, it’s been quite a while since the show checked in on him. Is that a good or a bad thing…? Anyway I’m not here to try and figure this out, that’s the author’s job and why I don’t write. This plot is so layered I wonder how long it took them to plan it all out, so many moving parts to it. I did do a quick head count though, there’s nine Titans. Eren has Attack, Beast, War Hammer and Founding. The others have Cart, Female, Armored, Colossal and Jaw. So that’s 5 vs 4? So that’s one advantage? Maybe? If this episode is called Night of the End, then I think this might be a rather long day coming up. Maybe there’s hope, but I’ve got enough experience with this show to expect a rug pull out from underneath everything at any given moment. “Don’t you dare end the episode…” *episode ends - Rage Quit Expressions So I guess you could say at the end of this you were… stewing? :D /munches on French Fries. That’s enough for this round I think. Pass the salt!

Hahaha I noticed that while editing the ep for YouTube!!! Jean does still love Mikasa I guess! Yeah, it's not like there won't be any gain from Eren's plan when it comes to Paradis - they'd be reaping all the benefits. But genocide is genocide no matter what. Right - everyone is guilty of something here. I see what you mean about Yelena possibly being classified as an anarchist. And so true about Armin!!!!! It's sad because it was mostly unintentional, but still. If we're taking responsibility here, then it's too much to ignore. But yeah, a character who kills a single character we loved feels worse somehow....it's a matter of perspective, because everyone has someone who cares about them. Such a great point about the lines being so blurred between right and wrong here, that it makes any talk of justice very murky. But yeah, Floch doesn't give a Floch lol, big difference! Yeah, we haven't seen Eren in a while, have we?! Or Zeke. For someone not trying to figure it all out, you've got some pretty good perspective on the whole thing! That is a bit of an advantage that one side has more Titans! Oh I hear you, I'd love to have some hope but I have a feeling the worst is yet to come. HAHAHAHA my rage quite expressions!! LOL YANG JOKE ALERT!!! And a great one at that!!! :D

2023-01-15 22:47:10 This has to be 1 of my favorite episodes. I love how much introspection & interesting dialogue and emotion they put into it. Since you have said you have watched it 1 of the people working on this episode was also involved in Steins Gate and you can see his influence with a lot of the shots. I love that the episode starts with what Jean's dream looks like it’s so great but so very sad. I really love how the animation has a real dreamlike quality to it and it’s great to see him so happy. It was surprising to see him still having feelings for Mikasa with the wife in his fantasy looking like her but it should not have been since feelings don’t just go away and are not really logical. The saddest part of this is there is such a minuscule chance of this happening for him it might as well be 0. I will elaborate on this more later but Jean is 1 of the best AOT characters and definitely 1 of my favorites in my opinion. It is really rough to see how badly Jean just wants to ignore and shut out everything you can help but feel bad for him. He doesn’t want to fight or have to make these hard decisions anymore but unlike Eren can’t ignore the morality or human life aspect of things. It is crazy how similar Jean & Eren ended up being. It’s amazing how easily you can tell what the characters are feeling almost entirely from the voice acting. The thing with Hange here is that the planning is mostly just deciding to fight against what Eren is doing and figuring out the how later. Genocide is wrong should be obvious but in the AOT world it isn’t and sadly the morally good/right thing isn’t always obvious in our world either. Honestly Jean’s fears are very valid and understandable since they truly are destroying themselves stopping this. The frustration sucks because they have tried so hard to find answers and haven’t been able to. And all the arguments that they will still have time after stopping the genocide (which really should be referred to as omnicide at this point) are just Hange’s speculation & hopes at this point. You can really feel her anger and sadness not wanting to justify this horrible thing and honestly it fits with how a lot of characters had to justify their actions in the past. Also I don’t think this anger/sadness is only directed towards Eren but towards herself because they weren’t able to give any alternatives to all the terrible options they had that might have convinced him not to do all these terrible things. It is so amazing/emotional to see the pressure/weight of leadership on Hange and much of an impact the fallen still have on our characters it’s a great call back to when Erwin had a moment like this. It’s so great that we can recognize so many characters here from the more main characters to the minor characters who would be considered “red shirts”. The thing that’s so true is that all these characters died while they were still fighting for a purer version of freedom since they didn’t know anything and before things became so morally grey or worse which makes their influence so important. It’s so emotional that Jean got reminded of Marco in this moment and I’m forever a scout is such an amazing line. It is so crazy to think how important, impactful and influential Marco has become years after his death especially as a character who was very simple and minor in the end but has gotten more meaning as time has gone on but especially for Jean and his character development. Something interesting someone said about Marco is that he is a character that didn’t have the chance to become more than a minor/side character and characters that would be described that way in season one became more as the show went on and another thing is that it’s great when a character can sneak up on you Marco. Also the music in this scene & throughout the episode really sold the tone and atmosphere. And this might have been some of the best voice acting especially being such a dialogue heavy episode. The tense silence helped add to the intensity of all these conversations. I feel like there was validity to both sides of the argument between Magath & Jean because the Islanders have directly went through tragedy & pain caused by Marley especially the events that shaped Eren but Magath most likely had family directly affected by the horrific Eldian Empire since it only ended 100 years ago. Also because of the way he’s been taught about the island since he was a child and being around 50 years old he’s going to stuck in his ways and very change resistant which is an unfortunate thing that happens to not all but many people with age. I love how the simmering stew is representing how things were becoming more intense and close to reaching a boiling point it was great imagery & use of sound. It’s so great that Hange is acting as the mediator and is able to so easily understand both sides and it’s a nice detail that we have the 2 groups with her in between them. I was so glad to see her talking about how there’s no point discussing the past because so many of them weren’t there. It’s sad to see how uncomfortable Reiner & Gabi were with what the General was saying. I love how with who Annie is as a character she very much simplifies things asking the most important question if when it comes down to it can they kill Eren their best friend. I think it’s great writing that there is still that tension and sort of rivalry between Annie & Mikasa with many of her words seeming pointed at Mikasa. The fact that both of them were so ready to fight really shows the skill and how they are fighters through and through. But I love how after all the thinking she’s done and understanding more Annie totally understands her feelings and they come to a truce. I love the writing behind the truth of Yelena because it completely re-contextualizes everything about her character/what she’s done/said and also doesn’t because it completely makes sense for her character and I actually think it makes her more interesting than simply being a fanatic. Also it feels realistic since there are people who exist like this IRL and matches with everything she has been saying about being part of history. It feels like she only has anger and hate left with how she seems to be trying to stoke the flames of hate and vengeance of the others although I think there is a very small part of it that’s genuine. Yelena & Pieck have a strange friendship with how she pets her Titan and Pieck likes it and I can see why there is a ship of these 2. Also she has such a way with words the you gobble down the idea of saving the world to wash down hate or something like that is beautiful, poetic, poignant connecting with the themes of the show & what’s going on in the show right now. The animation of the fire and other environments is great this episode. It’s hilarious that Jean/Hange basically ignore her and he makes a pointed comment about Yelena’s own sins. I do think it is very good to think about the bad things everyone has done to understand the weight of their actions in the past and present. Unfortunately she knows people too well and hits Jean where it hurts the most bringing up Marco. Although he definitely deserved to know what happened to Marco in full. I love how when Annie starts to take the blame Reiner comes to her defense since he instigated it and constantly put pressure on her and her surprise makes sense considering her feelings towards him. I love how we have so much beautiful imagery of the forest which is so important to the story as he talks about Marco although they may have lingered on some of it too much. It’s great how this connects to how they have never really engaged in talking to each other and how surprising being together talking like this is. It may not be able to change anything in the end but it’s a step in the right direction and matters so much. It’s so hard to once again see how much guilt and self-hatred Reiner has but I like how the others understand his fractured psyche to know that a lot of how he feels is clouded by delusions but I actually do believe with the split personality thing that he did kill the Titan that killed Marco. It sucks that Jean was going to accept this and move on but Reiner kept talking which just made him angrier because even though we know this isn’t what was happening but to Jean it sounded like he wanted forgiveness. It doesn’t feel good because we understand them both but this brutal beating was a long time coming especially with how important Marco was to Jean. I think the look on his face is so good you can clearly see his anger, sadness, exhaustion, pain and maybe relief at venting conflicting all at once. Also of course the kids would get involved with the whole get the children out of the forest thing. I love Gabi’s entire speech here it really reflects all her growth and how messed up this situation really is for all the characters involved and what a dark world it is. It is striking how much she looks like Eren in this moment. Also the pleas from her and Falco as well as the despair they are feeling is so heartbreaking. I think what we see of Magath here is such great writing because he has always cared about the warriors and wanted change in Marley but has always just perpetrated the system and cycle of hate in Marley being a cog in the system. I love how here is when he is able to fully realize what they have done to the warriors by what Gabi and Reiner talked about and it’s because of his caring for her that he understood and its sad that he can’t even bring himself to reach out knowing his own responsibility. It hurts to see how much pain Jean is in still wanting to block everything out. And of course he came right back with the intention of helping he can’t turn away from his nature. Also I want to point out that Falco made sure Gabi had a bigger portion of their sleeping bag how sweet are they. I like the detail of the characters being separated by the cargo in the wagon because they are together but separated by different experiences and issues between them. Also the animation of Pieck coming out of her Titan is more beautiful than necessary TBH but I love it. The only theory for the rest of the season I can be sure of is Floch will be dying. His face is so disturbing at the end here it’s not 1 of the fun ones. This was a great reaction I love it and please keep up the great work. :-) <3

Ohh I didn't realize someone involved with Steins Gate was involved with this, cool! Oh yeah I know, I didn't realize he still had a thing for Mikasa after all this time, seems like ages ago he had a crush on her. Jean is awesome!!! He's the one dude that didn't have some kind of big issue he was so determined over....he just wanted a simple life...yet here he is anyway. Jean's got some great points for sure and sadly, while Hange is right, it still doesn't help provide any kind of clear path to getting this done. Love the red shirt reference haha!!! And everything was working so well on this ep, couldn't agree more. Yeah it's nice to be reminded that they had a little *meow noise* kind of rivalry going hahah. Yeah the petting from Yelena threw me off haha. And too true that Yelena really knows how to hit where one lives. Yeah I can't blame Jean for just not being able to take what he saw as Reiner trying to get some kind of forgiveness. I agree about Magath! He's a layered character and does care but ended up being part of the cycle. Good point about the separation in the wagon, great visual representation there. Oh man, there's gonna be cheering in the streets when Floch gets it lol. Thank you so much for all your kindness and support!!!!!!!!!!

2023-01-15 22:47:10 I forgot to tell you exactly why I love Jean as a character so much. He’s just a normal guy who wanted a comfortable life. And back in season one people looked down on him for this but it’s actually impressive that he had a plan like this at 15/16 because no teenager has life figured out like him. Also I love him because even though that’s what he wants instead he keeps going through terrible situations and making hard choices because of his morals and character development all sparked because of Marco which is such amazing writing. He’s such a kind, caring, heartfelt person and is a hero. Also I really love how genuine and emotional you are in your reactions. You really understand the themes of the show so well and have really great discussions. A lot of the stuff in the show and your commentary is poignant considering what’s going on in the world today. This show is about darkness but also hope which is reflected in the characters and your reactions which is so important to understand. Thank you for giving me so much enjoyment and please keep up the great work. :-) <3
