Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 27 of the final season of AoT!  Oh dang guys....RIP to Magath and Shadis...!!!  They made the ultimate sacrifice so that our sliver of a plan could have a half a chance.  Also, Falco's first transformation!!!  Whoa!!  :O
Not to mention some high flying action and tons of gore, mostly thanks to Mikasa, shoot.
I'm seeing more and more that everyone has someone they care about, so even if it takes every last person on this show, it's like they feel that no one who has someone they care about should have to suffer like they did.  Does that make sense?  Can't believe the finale is next...!!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Quickly, before I start rambling: AoT is only taking ONE Week off. The next episode drops April 3. As far as the Jaegerists looking scared, I mean… I think anyone would be scared if they knew Mikasa was on the other team. And it seems she’s taking the gloves off, sheesh! She’s at least as, if not more, deadly than a Titan. Also, no comment on Floch finally getting his desserts? It kind of seems like he’s the one driving this whole line of thinking. He might not be completely wrong, though, when it comes to the fate of Paradis. Speaking of things more dangerous than a Titan, I’ve changed my mind. Give Gabi the gun. Clearly this is all going to be over in a couple shots if we let her shoot. 😂 She’s what we like to call in the gaming community, OP (overpowered). “I hate that Eren has put us in this situation…” Yes, he’s making those choices. But who made the choices that put him in that position in the first place? What if Marley decided not to constantly bombard Paradis with Pure Titans. What if Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt don’t attack the wall after Ymir eats their comrade in the first place? Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Nobody’s blameless here. Something that I picked up on way back in Episode 11 of Season 1: Pyxis is telling Eren that it was believed that if a great external threat emerged, humanity would unite to defeat it. Whether that’s a coincidence or not I can’t say, but part of me does wonder if he’s big braining everything. At the same time, Grisha saw what was coming and he says “I never imagined it would be so terrible.” So what did he see? Has he seen all the carnage so far, or has he seen something… worse that hasn’t happened yet? Falco’s Titan kinda looks like a bird. Was that on purpose? I see you there. I think we pretty much know where everyone stands at this point. With the exception of ONE person. Annie addresses it: nobody really actually knows what Mikasa will do when Eren is in the fray again. Of all the characters, she is by far the hardest to read. And Eren is probably the person that means the most to her, talking about why everyone is fighting. I don’t think even SHE knows what she’s going to do. I guess the only way to find out is to keep watching. PS: if you don’t stock up on sugar and tissues before the finale, that’s on you. 😂 Do you plan on writing a strongly worded letter to the mangaka about your emotional turmoil after the series ends? 🙃 You have two weeks to lower your blood pressure now. Good luck! 😉

Truth

I think everyone not in the main cast is dead now (except our angel sasha we all miss her so much)

Manny

Thank you Shadis and Magath 😢

I’m a little disappointed that Armin and Floch didn’t get more interaction/a final confrontation. The two of them are Erwin’s successors. Floch is the devil side of Erwin taken to the extreme- the manipulation, the lying, the heroic speeches to spur people into action, the ‘do whatever it takes’ attitude. Armin is the human side of Erwin taken to the extreme- the idealism, the desire to protect, the curiosity and desire to expand and see the world. After Erwin died, Armin and Floch inherited different aspects of Erwin’s spirit. They even had that confrontation just after at the memorial. So I really did hope we’d see that story arc resolved 😅

kamenriderhime

Ohhhh that is such a good point, I'd never even thought of it that way!! Maybe they still will??? Looks like Floch didn't get a mortal wound...at least that's how it looked to me!

kamenriderhime

Ohhh cool thanks for the info!! Hahahah true, Mikasa's no joke!! Oh yeah, sorry, forgot to say how satisfied I was at Floch getting it lol....I have a feeling he's not dead though! His wound didn't look deadly to me but I could be wrong. HAHAHAHA Gabi could have ended this several eps ago with a few rounds :P That's the thing, this whole thing was a set of events, many of which were out of Eren's control. OHHHHH I'd forgotten that line from Pyxis!!! Hmmm!! Omg, it's possible Grisha saw something we haven't even seen yet...!!! Hahahaha ohhhh yeah I see what they did there with Falco looking like a bird! Yeah, Mikasa's the wild card at this point. So true that I don't even think she knows what she'll do. Hahahaha I'll be sure to stock up on snacks and tissue for the finale!!! And yes I'll be writing a strongly worded letter for sure :P Ok, now to start lowering that blood pressure!!! :D

2023-01-15 21:00:17 I think this is such a great episode. The music from last episode added a lot but having the scene of Conny and Armin without music is pretty impactful as well especially with the silence being broken by the gunshots. It’s so very sad to see Armin desperately reaching out Daz as he slowly sinks into the sea that Armin loves having not wanted to hurt them. The way they look at each other with such sorrow, shock & possibly guilt is really tough to see. And unfortunately they have no time to grieve with the action arriving in the background. I think I’ll say this now the chaos in this entire episode once again represents what real battle is like. I think Hange’s expression here is the most appropriate reaction to something in the whole series. Hearing how long it's going to take to get the plane ready was devastating especially as everyone emphasizes how they don’t have the ability to face a long siege and all of these setbacks are making take too long considering what’s at stake. Also it’s unfathomable to imagine how something as big as the colossals can move so fast but that’s the reality characters have to deal with. It’s so sad that Marley is basically doomed but the more horrifying thing is based on the timeframe Hange was describing that within a month more or less the world will be destroyed. I like the little memory from Jean showing someone from the outside world they were on good terms with which is to show the people the rumbling is going to kill. Thankfully they are able to come up with a plan quickly enough although it’s very dangerous. I love that this plan being risky & a gamble connects back to Erwin and his gambles Hange being in the scene just makes it more impactful. Also it’s interesting to see more of the map of the AOT world. I think they depict the urgency and direness of the situation really well. It’s crazy to see Mikasa hanging on to Annie after everything that has happened you would never expect it to. It’s great to see both Annie & Reiner defend the mechanics and Magath because they were able to protect instead of her and putting themselves at risk to do it. It really shows that there was always the ability to do this within them it was just circumstances and environment preventing that. Also it’s great to see Reiner acting as a shield since he was called Marley’s shield. A thing I like is how Annie reacts to the thunder spears since she would have been told what to expect but experiencing it is different. I like the moment of Floch coming face-to-face with Hange killing his men since she is the commander of the scouts. Also I love that Floch is intelligent figuring out they are going to use the boat because it makes him so threatening as a villain. I love Reiner jumping in front of Annie to protect her from the spears because it’s nice to see after all their conflict and it shows who he really is to her and the part of the instrumental that comes in at this moment is so good. I like how Pieck & the others are immediately able to tell how bad things are with Annie and Reiner not going to last. I feel really bad that Falco is having similar feelings about Galliard that Armin feels about Erwin it’s just sad. Also obviously I don’t want Falco running off on his own but it makes total sense. I almost forgot but I love how Floch rallies his men because of how he knows how to talk to people and what will motivate them although it does suck to see him once again use the scouts motto in a way that feels wrong. Also I like how his soldiers are not all uniform in the way they look some are terrified/about to be sick, some are just resigned to fight and others are the ones completely in agreement with Floch with looks of fanatic determination. Seeing Falco trying so desperately to transform was hard to watch especially when Jean shows up and he hides his hands like a kid caught in the cookie jar. Seeing the female Titan’s head fall was such a brutal shock having to see both her and Reiner on their last legs. Before I forget the reinforcements coming and dying is really good because of not knowing what’s going on there with everyone shocked in the same way. It was so intense to see them so close to death but I love the way Conny comes in to save them especially because an easily forgotten moment after Reiner saved him from a small Titan in season 2 Conny says he wants to repay him and Annie one day since Annie also saved Conny in the basement full of titans in season one. It’s also fantastic that they gave Conny the Levi treatment in terms of animation that’s ODM combat at its best. And the strategy of using a dead soldier’s body to protect himself was a nice touch. It was great to see the teamwork going on here. The one female soldier looking terrified before being killed along with the line of not hesitating is a stark reminder of what they have to do. I feel like all of these situations are meant to narratively help them prepare themselves for what’s to come. Also the way Mikasa wipes the blood from her eyes is really cool albeit sad because of the violence they all have had to go through. In the manga the line is hesitate and we’ll never save our comrades instead of never stop the rumbling which probably works better. The way the tides start to turn with everyone getting involved is shown really well with Floch and his group getting more worried. The thing with them is if it was a different circumstance what they are fighting for would be noble and good protecting their country and people and I like that making it more complicated. I feel bad for thinking this but the way Pieck enters the fight just chomping on a guy is unintentionally funny. It makes sense but it’s crazy just how many thunder spears they used against the Cart Titan even Pieck can't believe it. Seeing someone transform into a Titan is always hype even with all the darkness and depression in the show although it was sad to see the desperation on Falco’s face. The best part was how different his iteration of the Jaw Titan looked and of course his Titan would have bird like features. It’s a good thing he was far enough away from the others and had such a clear goal in mind not being in control completely. It was awesome (and brutal) to see him in action especially how he created the opening needed to turn the tide. I absolutely love the animation for Floch’s facial expressions particularly how his face is very dynamic and becomes shadowed over as well as showing so many emotions like anger, determination and resignation. Also something I have always respected of him is his willingness to risk his own life for what he believes in. This was Floch’s most badass moment with such amazing animation and I love all the details like breaking Hange’s sword, all the crazy dodges, the way he uses a thunder spear to get past the cart Titan actually breaking his arm to get in a good position to sink the ship and you can actually see his arm bent unnaturally. The thing I love about his line about saving Eldia is without context of the rest of the show you would see him as a protagonist and if he succeeded most on the island would have viewed him as a hero. I like that when Gabi shoots him she does not look happy at all representative of her character development. Also the reason the water was such a different color is because there was literally so much blood in the water. I think he’s not dead but I’m unsure because he was wearing heavy armor and was wounded. However I don’t think he will be involved in the rest of the show and I think that would be fitting for him considering his character. It was insane to see Mikasa’s combat ability on full display after that. Especially how well animated and brutal it was particularly the beheading and explosive ending. It was also nice demonstration of her strength. Some people might say she went overboard with some of this but it was mostly anime rule of cool and to scare off the remaining soldiers with her piercing glare. And you have to admit the soldiers falling apart once Floch is out of the picture shows that he was a good leader. I really love how Falco going berserk is handled and it’s great that Magath was the one to help considering how much he’s grown to care about these kids. It’s really heartwarming to see how carefully he cuts him out of the Titan and holds him. He really did good for his 1st transformation without Falco they easily could have failed. I like seeing how exhausting this battle was with how everyone especially the Titan shifters were animated. I believe Magath decided to stay behind because it was strategically the right decision but also to atone for the things he did. With what happens next both Magath & Shadis were showing the qualities of leaders. It was so great to see Keith come in but it must be rough having to kill people he taught. It’s absolutely fantasticTo see instructor of the scouts and the instructor of the warriors face-to-face like this especially with the parallels/comparisons you can make between the 2. It’s crazy how much we became attached to these 2 considering what they were like when introduced and that’s thanks to the character development and new context we saw over the course of the show. It’s sad that they are sacrificing themselves but it makes sense for these characters with both of them feeling guilt for training kids for war and then growing to care for and be inspired by those same children. I love how Shadis is doing this because of his former students. Also it’s so great that this comes full circle with his whole bystander thing having accepted this part of himself but no longer being 1 becoming a hero in this moment. I love this moment of reflection from Magath of all the bad things he has done which is an important part of understanding his character. It’s absolutely heartwarming/heartbreaking to see him come to the conclusion about wanting the younger people to have normal lives when it is or might be too late particularly considering who has died. It’s great that Zeke was included in his memory since even if he doesn’t look it thanks to being a Titan he’s not that much older than the other main characters. The actor did a really great job of depicting his sorrow. His actions and what he says here really show his genuine remorse and heroism more than anything else could. I’m glad we can see that & that Keith is there to tell him this. It was interesting to see them have a sort of camaraderie and I believe wholeheartedly that in another life they would have been great friends. In the end they are two tired, old men with a lot of regrets who decided to leave the future to the next generation. The moment where they share their names is so beautiful especially those smiles. I’m glad they were able to have a moment like this in the end. This was 1 of those AOT moments that had me crying heavily but what really broke me was Gabi crying out in anguish and all Pieck could do was hold her with a sad look in her eyes. Also the show cutting out the sound at the moment of the explosion was a nice touch. Everyone is shocked/sad to varying degrees but I like how even Yelena is shocked with a pensive look on her face which is interesting considering her cynical outlook on the world. I love the post credits scene but of course it starts off with a bird because AOT loves its damn birds. It’s so sad to see Annie’s reaction to learning about the destruction of Liberio especially with how it’s like all the fight goes out of her. It’s just rough to see someone who has had so much drive for good or bad just have none. I love the way Hange deals with this you can clearly see their regret & sadness for this situation and losing Magath. Hange’s words about him are so meaningful/powerful especially because he wanted to help for no reason other than it being the right thing to do it is a beautiful piece of dialogue. The moment between Mikasa & Annie is amazing. I think I love it because they have often been at odds with each other but they are very similar characters who could have been friends so seeing them close like this is really nice. Especially how Mikasa is comforting her. I’m pretty sure Annie is asking if Mikasa can kill Eren because she’s unsure if she can do it if necessary. Annie talking about not wanting to fight against anyone anymore really speaks to the trauma and hardship she and others have faced in this show. It also very much represents the show with so much pointless fighting and people trying to find peaceful solutions. The voice acting and the tears in Annie’s eyes made me feel even more for her than I already did. And if you notice Mikasa is even less hesitant than before as she is hardening herself for what’s to come. I think this was a major part of this arc our heroes preparing themselves for what they have to do. It’s just a sad situation all around and any solutions aren’t going to be very good. I truly believe Mikasa is going to end up being the one to kill Eren which will be the most depressing thing of all. At this point I can only hope they get to talk to Eren at the end thanks to paths. And I can only hope this was all part of his plan to bring about a better world by uniting them against him. This took longer than I wanted but I’m glad to finally post this now. This is a great reaction and keep up the great work. :-) <3

This ep was so well done right! I think your summation of what's working here is really well said. The visuals, facial expressions, character team-ups and interactions, etc. Magath and Shadis though!!!! I couldn't agree more about how well done that was in every way. LOL AOT and birds!!! Annie and Mikasa's scene really says so much about how far we've come. And just what we realize about war, differences, etc. now. Ugh, that would be brutal but so fitting if Mikasa was the one to kill Eren!!! :/ Thank you for sharing your thoughts and sorry it took me so long to get back to you!!! Thanks for all your support, it means a lot!!! ^_^
