Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to episode 5 of Moon Knight!  WHOA, you guys, EVERYTHING HAPPENED in this one!!!!!  I didn't think we could have a more intense ending than our main character getting shot, but I stand corrected.  After learning the heartbreaking story of Mark's past (good lord!!), we see Steven realize what's been going on, coming to terms with it, fighting to protect Mark, and then.....getting frozen?!?!  WHAT?!!?  You guys, I'm so conflicted on this.  I loved Steven!!!!!!!  But now Mark is at peace...??  And are we gonna go ahead and stay in this paradise-like state, or go back to save the world??  I'm just still in shock and half expecting it not to stick!!!!  What an ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I got an interesting pop up on the Patreon app this AM: “MelissaBrain.exe has stopped working.” 🙃 Like you said, this episode is layered. You can probably go through it several times and pick up new tidbits each time. Now the hippo, who is quite a quirky character in this, and quite entertaining as well: her name is Taweret. She is a protective goddess in Egyptian mythology who represents childbirth and fertility. And she’s… driving a boat in the underworld to ferry unbalanced souls, kinda like their version of the River Styx…? Okay… makes about as much sense as everything else in this episode, right? Marc is the original character, and trauma is indeed what bore Steven. Now here is the philosophical point: Steven was created from several layers of trauma: the guilt from what happened to the brother, the abuse that was received because of it, and also Marc’s unwillingness to reconcile with the mother even after her death. Layers. Since Steven came in 2nd, is that a real person? A shield? Neither? Both? Perhaps this is one of the reasons there is a term called dissociative identity disorder. I’m no doctor, so someone else can handle that. Just something that occurred to me during the show. Speaking of the show: are you confused enough yet? The whole purpose of this episode is to keep you guessing, and nothing gets resolved. What is real? What is being imagined? Is there a trick here or is everything on the level? It should be pointed out that Marc’s issues are actually what made him a viable candidate to be Konshu’s avatar in the first place. He said as much during that flashback, so it seems like he has a thing for people who have damaged psyches. Remember what I said about Arthur, and it seems to apply to the doctor as well: you have to listen carefully when he’s talking. Don’t make an assumption based on what he’s saying, listen for anything definitive and try to filter it. If Steven is a part of Marc that’s separated from him, and they were actually able to reconnect due to the events of this episode, including when they accept each other at the end, perhaps that’s what caused the scales to balance… or maybe it’s Steven’s “death” from falling into the sand if the underworld that finally caused Marc to become a whole person and he was able to end up in the Field of Reeds? There are more questions than answers, so have fun digging. The only way to find out… is to keep watching. 😉

Alters don't ever truly die. They integrate, or they go dormant. To integrate, is when an alter merges with another creating a new entity. This can be another alter in the system or even the host. The host is changed by the integration. But it is alot like a potentially permanent (it can be undone) fusion. Think Steven Universe, with Garnet. Someone made from two becoming one. To go dormant, is what happens when an alter isn't as active and they don't front. They go to sleep in a way. Like someone putting them on pause. These two things can happen on accident. But also if the alter chooses to. For example, if Steven falling off the boat is symbolic of the actual disorder. It seems more like going dormant. I hope he isn't dead. That isn't how the disorder works. And is very insulting if implied. You don't get rid of parts of yourself to become whole. That doesn't work. Steven is his own entity but he is a part of the whole still. The way I am choosing to interpret this is. Steven telling Marc he was a child and to let go of his self hatred was the reason his scale balanced. Steven also had the potential to be balanced. I think if the hearts were weighed separately he would have made it too. But it happened because the moment Steven fell overboard the scales thought he was already judged accordingly. I'm hoping Marc goes back for him. He has entered the afterlife. But I need to see what happens afterwards. If Steven is thrown away and discarded I can't enjoy this series. It sends the wrong message about Alters. Alters should never be seen as byproducts or as things to be contained and discarded. It is literally deleting parts of yourself. And for one, that is impossible. And two it is very hurtful to any system. Real talk when we learn about their trauma I had to go away for a bit. Because one of my Protector Alters got triggered out by my anxiety. They can watch scenes like that and not panic. (Funny enough similar to how it showed during the funeral scene where Marc switches to Steven. Only my alter knows what is going on.) My PTSD triggered and so our brain decided to put me in time out so our heart rate could calm down. Can't wait to see how the series concludes for now. And I am curious about the third alter still. We saw that other coffin with someone trying to break free. That can't be for nothing. Also I heard the only episode with aftercredits is the final one. But I'm trying to avoid spoilers.

I will say even if the boat/mental hospital wasn't the inner world. It works like one. The inner world can also house memories and secrets to be uncovered in order to heal. Those memories behind doors were a good visual. Also seeing Steven exploring the memory and then flashing to Marc who seems to be reliving it in the same time, because Steven is viewing it for the first time is a lovely comparison for what it's like when trauma is shared between alters. When one alter holds the trauma memory and decides to let the others see it. Experience it themselves. It is quite a tricking and taxing process. And you need to be careful because much like different people react differently to scenarios so do alters. And not always positively. Which is why it is recommended to do so with a trusted therapist with you. Never alone. Or else it can end up like Steven taking over suddenly for two months. Or worse. The end goal is for everyone to be in the know about everything in order to work together. And either combine together (though this isn't always possible) or to work together throughout life together.

Yea I was also at a loss for how it ends here. Cause though the scales balanced, does that really mean Mark is at peace with how things ended up? I think they were getting somewhere with balancing their scale but I'm guessing one is easier to balance than two still shaky halves but that's just my thoughts. And yeah I still have a lot of mini questions just scattered on what was revealed. Just so many questions on Mark and Steven point of views growing up.

Oh that is fascinating about the process of integration. It actually makes so much sense. I wonder if they were trying to imply that Steven will go dormant. I really hope they're not taking a stance that is non-factual when it comes to DID!!! That would be disappointing and upsetting for sure. That's actually a really good interpretation of what happened! I hope Marc goes back too!! I totally agree that it would not do justice to either the show or to what they're trying to represent regarding DID for this to be the total end of Steven. It makes total sense that an alter is a real and important part of one's self that can not simply be thrown away or deleted. Thank you for sharing about that experience watching this episode! I truly appreciate all that you share here and it definitely helps me to understand the facts of DID better. Yes that coffin scene was for sure not just put there for nothing! Thanks for the heads up on the after credit too, I'm glad I didn't miss it!!!

That's interesting! I'm glad the representation here was realistic and that makes total sense about alters experiencing others' memories. Definitely a good idea to do it in a safe setting with a therapist. I can see how the goal is working together and having everyone in the know! Thanks again for explaining this!

kamenriderhime

Exactly!!! It's still unclear. So many questions right!!! One more ep so who knows if we'll get answers to them all, or if they'll save anything for season 2...!!

kamenriderhime

I definitely 404ed in this one :O It was quite layered! Thanks for the info on Taweret - yeah she was definitely one of the less surprising things here believe it or not lol. There are lots of questions about Steven here, and I'm not sure how closely the show will follow any established facts regarding DID, but I'll be curious to see! EXACTLY!!! Like we got lots of answers here, yet I'm still super unclear on a lot including just how much of this was/is real, etc.! Ahhh that's a good call about the careful wording from "Dr." Arthur too...good call! What tells me that's gonna be important later??? o.O I really feel like Steven's death causing the balance wouldn't make as much sense as the balance due to them reconciling, with Steven's falling off just happening to occur right after, the more I think about it. But I honestly have no clue! Guess I'll find out in the final ep this week!!!!!!! :O Thanks for your patience, I'm just now catching up on comments from Friday!

This is is probably my favorite episode, so many tears. I wasn’t expecting that ending at all.
