Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 14 of REBELS!!!!  Omg, speaking of all the great character development we do on this show, here is a fantastic ep that really does a lot for Zeb's character!!!  Not only do we get to know more about his background, but we follow him on the journey that basically leads to the reestablishment of his whole people!!!!  I can't imagine all that guilt he was carrying, and how this somewhat supernatural journey is going to help with that.
It was really beautiful!  Great ep! Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

This episode is probably one of my favorites. It’s always so cool to see how other cultures use/interpret the Force. And that last scene another one of the most beautiful in SW imo. The painted background, the music, it’s so cool. I’m pretty sure I was a little emotional the first time out of awe. Also the one who does the music is Kevin Kiner, who also did the music for Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, and Ahsoka.

This actually might sound blasphemous when said out loud, but this didn’t feel quite as much like a Star Wars episode - it felt a lot more like a Star TREK episode, given all the exploration and mystery stuff we were doing. So, I think I’m starting to get Hindi and my perception is if he’s around, things are never going to be… dull? Seems to me he’s kind of like that allergy that’s making your eye itch, you can’t get rid of it. I assume what you mean is he’s always going to be looking out for number one. Zeb is jaded beyond belief and who could blame him after what he’s been through. In fact, his demons are not all that dissimilar to Obi-Wan’s: he feels responsible for the destruction of his people, even though there were circumstances that were completely beyond his control. That doesn’t stop people from beating that weight, though. I think the last scene where he starts guiding the Ghost through is not just to help his people, but it’s also him coming to terms with all the different aspects of himself: his feelings, his responsibility, and his identity. You can’t really be completely whole unless you start to accept every aspect of yourself, both the parts you like and the parts you dislike. (I mean, Hondo’s an extreme example of this, but on a twisted level it works). Once he accepted everything about himself, he was ready to accept the fact that his people weren’t totally loss. Also, he said at the end of the episode he could show his people the way and I’m so disappointed nobody made a “this is the way” joke… The only one disappointed by this seems to be Chopper, he finally thought he’d get his own room… and he seems rather unhappy that there’s more than one Lasat left… what’s that about? (Insert binary grumbling sounds here. 🙃)

So in Legends, the Ashla and the Bogan were the 2 moons that orbited Tython, one of the first Jedi Temples and theoretically one of the planets of the order of the Je'daii and one of the places where the Force originated. The people of Tython recognized the Ashla and the Bogan as representations of the Force. The idea of the Light and Dark Side of the Force came from the Ashla and the Bogan and was recognized by the Tython settlers over 25,000 years prior to this. They saw the Ashla as a representation of the Light Side and the Bogan as the Dark Side. It's interesting to see other Non Force wielding species, such as the Lasat, as believers of the Ashla and the Bogan.

Roll out the red carpet for Hondo I love him regardless. XD Man that looked beautiful but it must have been terrifying going into that thing. But there was something magical about it. When Zeb takes the screen he saves the day in a big way. That’s awesome to know that there is more of his people out there. It’s wonderful

Hahaha that's ok, I love Star Trek too! I can totally see how it feels more like a Trek ep in some ways. Ah yes, I think you've summed up Hondo well, and that is what I meant! Great point comparing Zeb to Obi-Wan. The guilt must be overwhelming. Hahaha that's actually a really great point that Hondo is an extreme example of self-acceptance, but I see what you mean about Zeb's journey. He had to come to terms with all aspects of himself before he could see clearly about his people. LOL who knows about Chopper, but yeah he seemed bummed over not getting his own room!!!! His binary grumbles are legendary haha.

kamenriderhime

Oh interesting!! Thanks for explaining! That is very interesting to hear about early lore regarding the Force, and see how non-Jedi/force wielders interpret it.

kamenriderhime

Hahahah yeah gotta love Hondo even when he's double crossing! Oh yeah, it was beautiful and magical for sure! But definitely scary if you're the one in the cockpit heading straight into it! It's so nice to know about his people right!!! Couldn't agree more!

(Third time I've tried to upload this comment, dunno whats wrong) One of the more mystical episodes of Rebels, you'll see a few of them to come Mel! You feel for Zeb here and the way he starts off by alienating himself from the other Lasats onboard, as he's ashamed he couldn't protect his people when they needed him, even if he did the best he could. I love how they play with the ideas of the force in this episode, with mentions of it coming under different names and the Lasats calling it the Ashla (which, btw was Ahsoka's original name when she was in development and that in turn came from George Lucas's original term for the lightside of the force (Bogan being the darkside)). That background of the imploded star cluster is gorgeous, and brings a rare thing we don't see too much of in Star Wars, awe, which tended to be more of a thing Star Trek used to be good for. The music too is inspired by Phillip Glass (I don't know how strong you are on types of music Mel, though I have seen a guitar in some of your backgrounds!). To me its more like a late Beethoven string quartet, and is something we just don't hear in Star Wars. People always hark on about Clone Wars (and Bad Batch) about how amazing the later series look, and they are correct; but somehow, some of the designs and especially backgrounds in Rebels stick out for me more. I'd love for them to revisit this style some day and give it the bigger budget that Clone Wars and Bad Batch enjoy, to really see what they can do with it. We've seen other styles too with Visions, and I think Tales Of The Jedi might look a bit more unique also, so hopefully one day Rebels style will come around again. Love that once Zeb starts to believe in the prophecy and begins to open himself up to the idea of the part he'll play, the force begins to flow through him, guiding him to Lira San, and I love that Kanan nods to Ezra for them to help Zeb focus the force, and find the path through the cluster. When they find the planet, you can see Zeb now feels more at peace and frees his guilt, knowing that his people survive and are free of Imperial tyranny. Beautiful episode.

Oh sorry, Patreon deletes comments sometimes, it's annoying!! I loved the mystical feel! Poor Zeb, carrying that guilt. The different names/ideas for the force were great, and that's so interesting about Ahsoka's original name! Yes, it's been pointed out that this had a Trek vibe to it, I can see that for sure! Yes the music was so unique and beautiful!!! Ah yes the guitar!!! I love music but sadly didn't get too proficient on guitar past 3-5 chords haha, one day though. I agree that the visuals here are great. You never know, maybe they'll go back to the Rebels style one day! That was a beautiful moment when we see Zeb's self-acceptance, and the force really begins to work. Yes, how freeing it must have been for Zeb!! It was really stunning!!

I tend to rewatch these episodes a few days before you post here, and write notes in notepad anyway, so I always have a backup since that issue I had when I first signed up here on Patreon, and its the first time I've used this place. So I can always copy and paste back in if needed, and I check the comments regularly on Rebels to see what you guys are conversing about with the show, so its no biggie, but a tad irksome when I don't see my comment up lol! It is an interesting idea about the force and living things though, that once they open up to it, things can happen for them, even if they don't have the midichlorian count force-sensitive beings have. For example, I have a theory that some of the best pilots we see in Star Wars, such as Han, Lando, Wedge, Poe (if I must include the sequels!) and Hera here; have an ability to let the force flow through them when flying in their element, to bring out the best in them, and to do those crazy manoeuvres to get them out of scrapes. And Zeb here, even if he doesn't know it, is doing this, to get his people to their promised land.

kamenriderhime

Oh wow, cool! Good thing you're prepared! I always have them in my email too, if you need me to re-paste them! Also I'm happy to be the first person you've ever sponsored on Patreon, yay!!! It's definitely a bit of a hassle but glad it's not too bothersome thanks to your great prep. Ohhhh I like that theory! So one might not necessarily be Jedi material, yet they still have the ability to tap into the force in some way. That's cool, I like that!

Loved your reaction for this one: a brilliant episode for all the reasons you gave. And I'm totally with you about the music on Rebels, especially in this episode. This show seems surprisingly under-known and underrated: it's actually my favourite bit of Star Wars content - even more so than Clone Wars, and that's really saying something. From the end of season two onwards it gets even better, and I suspect you will think so too, based upon your appreciation of the show so far.

Nick

I love the mystical/ fantasy elements that they insert in Rebels - especially in the last season (about which I will say no more! :-) )

kamenriderhime

Nick I don't see your comment anymore, but have it in my email - thank you!!! I love the music and everything they're doing here and can't wait for more!

Nick

You are welcome :-). The comment does seem to have disappeared completely!

Nick

No problem. And apologies if I have missed some of your replies but notifications via e-mail don’t seem to work for me.
