Hey everyone!!  Here it is - my reaction to the ep 9 of RWBY ICE QUEENDOM!!!!  Whoa, so much going on in this one, including a moment with actual real Weiss!!!
I loved that scene between them - emotionally, visually, etc.  Also we were SO close to falling asleep in that coffin, sheesh!!!  Talk about cutting it close.  I feel like Ruby has renewed resolve now and I was so glad we did our stalling tactic, even if it did start to go really wrong.  It bought us enough time for Yang and Blake to make the ultimate entrance from their banished land!  I think Blake is about to work through some stuff!!!  Can't wait!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I feel like Blake must be attempting to create some kind of massive distraction so that Yang & co. can slip past Negative Weiss while all Negative Weiss's attention is necessarily focused on Blake & the Grimm-like White Fang....since she was so adamant about brute force alone not being enough.

The scene between (real) Weiss and Ruby was very sweet & endearing though am I the only one who slightly freaked out when the camera angle shifted to Weiss's legs standing on the stool like that? It was so disorienting and made me think of someone stepping on a chair to commit suicide by hanging themselves and it freaked me out for a few seconds.....feel like this was a deliberate fake out by Studio SHAFT.

Sidebar, I just love the way Studio SHAFT's 2D animation is able to capture Blake's ear-twitches such that they look like a real cat's....the movement is so fast and subtle they probably can't quite reproduce it in the Maya Engine....though the switch from Poser to Maya allowed them to at least break new ground with the expressiveness of Blake's ears....the 2D animation just takes it to a whole new level.

Also, the etched Apple on the surface of the glass coffin kind of evokes a little bit of Sleeping Beauty, which I believe others have already alluded to here.

Melissa…. We’ve talked about this before… stop being in such a hurry to close the episode at the end, you didn’t get to see the fan art again… 👀 /takes cookies away It seems that Ruby falling into her own dream is what allowed Weiss’ true persona to contact her. If she hadn’t, the only entity they’d be able to interact with is Negative Weiss, who, isn’t good for negotiation. I am curious to find out what Weiss meant about putting Crescent Rose backwards. She did say there was a reason, and also said something interesting that didn’t seem like a throwaway line: “it hides in the shadow of the person you’re facing.” There’s a meaning, there. But who is that person? One would assume it’s Weiss, but maybe it’s not? Back in the real world, Shion might be good at their job, but they’re kinda lousy at observation. You only just now noticed Ruby was having her own Nightmare problem when Yang was literally bandaging her hand in front of you earlier? It seems Ren and Nora might have unwittingly thrown Jaune’s secret under the bud too, when they mentioned he only recently unlocked his Aura. Also Ruby losing her last coin seems to be a byproduct of Shion trying to pull her out of the dream state. Ozpin did say something along the lines of battle stress awakening powers: but the camera wasn’t on Jaune, but Ruby. I don’t think the silver eyes will be a thing, but maybe that’s what the reference was for? Ruby would have been trapped herself if not for that sword stuck in the roof. It seems to be a relic itself and might be a manifestation of Jaune’s immunity from his own dream? Also, I don’t think Ruby is immune, her Nightmare problem is still active, Jaune’s is just expelled residue. Also it’s kinda fun seeing all those Weiss kids cheer Jaune on - something the real Weiss probably isn’t gonna be caught dead doing in V1-2. I could go into detail about Weiss and Blake’s observations but the show already does a good enough job showing its cards there, so suffice to say neither is the same girl they were when they story began, and move on from there. I think the juxtaposition of Pyrrha’s song and Weiss’ are this: Pyrrha’s was a reflection of hope meant to cheer up everyone around her - while Weiss version is done after she thinks everyone has fallen asleep - and there’s no one left to save her. Unlike Pyrrha, her version is silent, solemn, and hopeless. On a side note, we already know Jen is going to do Pyrrha’s version for English Dub, but Kara isn’t a singer, and lets Casey do all the vocals. Which is better for Weiss’ vocals but it’ll be interesting to see how Casey approaches this version, which I assume she’ll be doing. Now, regarding the coffin freeze - I think the Nightmare literally did think everything was wrapped up and was in the process of cleaning up with the coffin… but then it sensed something was off. I’m not sure what the trigger was, if it was Ruby and Jaune, or Blake and Yang, but it bothered it enough to wake Negative Weiss up again. So a lot of the Tinies are frozen in place along with Ren and Nora, and it seems everything was about to sleep for good until Ruby booted up the train. Pyrrha’s even using a Tiny Weiss Myrtenaster herself to help. Also… we’re down to five Weisses on the train from ten. #CanWeRiotYet Stop shooting the cute kids! I did notice that Arma Jacques, for lack of a better term, was able to pull out the big sword and throw it away, but if he’s part of the Nightmare, it doesn’t seem like he should be able to do that? Also Weiss said something that sounded like a barb, but there seems to be a clue there: “you still don’t understand what is and isn’t allowed.” Speaking of which, Yang riding in on Bumblebee seldom gets upstaged - but Blake wearing Adam’s outfit? Well, can’t say that was an expected twist. First, it should be noted in canon that Adam doesn’t become an all out abuser until the end of V3, so that trauma has not yet occurred, and also why Yang isn’t a little more triggered. At this point the two have just gone their own ways. I think much like Weiss has had to come to terms with the darker sides of herself, so has Blake. While Blake’s cause may be slightly more justified, some of her actions have been regrettable as well. You can’t move forward from your mistakes until you learn to accept they are a part of you. What part they continue to be is your choice, but everyone must eventually come to terms with even the most unpleasant parts of themselves if they can ever hope to grow. Also note: Yang has Jaune’s cloak (it might be important), and Blake has now uncovered both her cat ears, so perhaps she’s fully embraced that side of herself. Here’s the more interesting theory, and I think Blake may have picked up on it. The Empire inside Weiss’ dream is built on order, and Negative Weiss’ actions are all hell bent on keeping the status quo. What is the one element that everyone in the Empire fears might upset the order of things? The Faunus. And what’s Blake currently the most representative of? Yup. So, is it a stretch to say that Weiss may not actually be the most powerful entity in the dream… it might be Blake because of the fear she produces? I mean, we’ve heard nothing but fret about Blake since this dream started so maybe like I’ve said before, she could have the biggest key to putting this all back in its place. Either way, the claws are out. There’s also more references to that other anime mentioned earlier but I’m gonna decline to point them out here since I put it on your watch list for later. Looks like we got one heckuva fight ahead of us, though! By the way, I feel like I’m back in class trying to make sense of all this every week, I always end up with a essay rather than a comment. SOWWEE! 😂

kamenriderhime

Oh that makes sense actually! That would be a more in-depth plan. Oh I know, the kitty ear twitches are so well done!!! Their animation studio is killing it!

kamenriderhime

OMG yes I can totally see the contrast between the sweetness of that scene and the visual of the legs on the stool....very similar to what you would see before a self-hanging. I'm sure it was intentional to accentuate the horror of it! Yes the apple is a lot like Sleeping Beauty or Snow White!

Spadeas

Hi Hime :) The intro scene between Ruby and Weiss is super cute. What Weiss says about the enemy in his shadow and the analogy of the mirror, makes me wonder if Nega-Weiss is not the reflection of the real Weiss, the real one would be in her reflections and her shadow. Imagine if we use a mirror to bring out the real Weiss who will face Nega-Weiss while the others take care of the grimm. I just realized by rewatching this episode, that Jaune unintentionally reinforced the teacher's aura, which allowed Ruby to wake up, with the help of the sword too. Mirror Mirror almost brought a tear to my eyes too. Blake who adopts the roles that the dreams wanted to give her, with a very "Adamish" appearance. Probably to force her to understand that she and Weiss are not so different.

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) It is, and that's an excellent point about perhaps Nega Weiss' shadows or reflection being the true mirror image of Weiss. I would LOVE to see real Weiss vs. Nega Weiss!!! Oh yeah, I knew they were starting to poke around what his semblance is a little early, looks like he did boost the aura! Wasn't the soft, sad singing so moving?! Yes her appearance is Adamish isn't it. Exactly, I think they will work through some things!!!!!

kamenriderhime

Oh nooooo!!!! I'll watch it at the start of the next one, sorry!! Yeah, good point that we could only see real Weiss through a dream. Yeah I'm not sure what she meant with the shadow line!!! Oh yeah, there was the bandaging scene, not sure how Shion over looked that! Oh I would love it if we got some silver eyes action in this!!! Ohhh good call that Ruby probably would not have the same immunity. And yes the little baby Weisses cheering him on, so sweet!! YES, that's a great way to sum up this version of Mirror Mirror!!! It's a symbol of hopelessness and loneliness compared to Pyrrha's more positive version. Oh that's probably true that Casey will do the vocals in the dub! Yeah I agree about the coffin, the stage was set until something seemed off. The train idea was so good!!! Things would have definitely gone south really fast otherwise. OMG I know the tiny Weisses are dropping like flies, ughhh!!! Hmmmm good point about Jacques, is it possible Weiss is right and we don't fully understand the rules? OMG if there's anything that could upstage Bumblebee it's the shock of Blake dressed as Adam....!! Also good call about Adam, in this timeline, it does make sense. Great point that Blake, too, has learned to accept the darker parts of her past so that she can move on, which is absolutely necessary for growth! Also good call about the ears and also the cloak, I'm sure it will be important! That's actually a really great point that even stronger than Negative Weiss could be the fear of Faunus that seems to permeate every aspect of this nightmare. And if Weiss faces her fear and resolves it, will that save her from the dream? Not sure...!! Kitty has claws!!!!!! Haha no worries, there's a lot to unpack here for sure and I enjoy reading your thoughts and feedback!!!!!!!! :D

Hi Hime, too bad you didn't see the illustration at the end, next episode maybe? The face you made with the new Blake look reveal, that was so me xD Time to wait for the next one then ^^

kamenriderhime

Oh yes, I did go back and watch it on the next one!!! Lol yes I think we were all in shock right! Hope you love my next reaction!!
