**Mild headphone warning because I remember getting screamy at one point haha**

Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 3, episode 2 of REBELS!!!! So glad we resolved a lot of things here!  Kanan is definitely in a better mindset, and he gets there just in time to show up for Ezra when he needs him most!  We put a stop to this Sith business with Ezra before it went too far, phew.  That was scary!  It took a demotion and a pretty sticky situation to humble him here, but I think he learned his lesson.  Oh yeah, and I found out after that Thrawn is from a series of books, that's why it sounded familiar!!  Can't wait for more!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Given Kanan’s circumstances, and how he was obviously and understandably feeling about it, I thought when Bendu said “If you can see yourself, you will never be truly blind, Kanan Jarrus” such a beautiful thing to say. There is possibly a parallel with Obi Wan here (in the recent Obi Wan Series), who perhaps also did the same as Kanan: distance himself from the force because of personal psychological trauma (although the source of that trauma was different for each of them). Rebels as a series overall focuses more on character and character development than other series and films (IMO), and Kanan’s 'therapy' session with Bendu is not the last bit of therapy of a Rebels character that happens (of which I will say no more 😊); it really adds emotional depth to the series (for the viewer) and allows for a deeper appreciation of the characters involved. And Kanan rescuing Ezra at the end was very moving: telling Ezra to “let go” was especially poignant (the music helped!): I think it partly symbolises Kanan’s reconnection to the force having let go of the trauma of being blinded. And at that moment, Ezra needed to let go of his fear so that he could physically let go of the falling station and be rescued by Kanan. And it also pointed to the re-formation of their bond as master and apprentice. The Y-wings going to General Dodonna: he was in Rogue One when attacking the planet Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor were stealing the Death Star plans from, and in the original trilogy (eg coordinating the Death Star attack in A New Hope). He is the older white haired and white bearded general you see in these films. I think the first two episodes of Season 3 starts off well and sets a different, slightly more serious, tone, with higher stakes.

Kanan has got rid of his armour in his look now and wearing his full lightsabre in public. Those six months, while he has blocked himself off from everyone and allowed Ezra to slip towards the darkside, look like he's been reflecting on who he is and all that he has seen. However he has become a bit lost again and needs Bendu's help to get him back on course, and back into the fight. Lovely scene where he realises what he's become, full of anger, grief and fear, and frees himself as he accepts this, as Bendu tells him 'if you can see yourself, you'll never be truly blind, Kanan Jarrus, Jedi Knight'. Its very much a lesson we can all try to take on board to get over our own faults and regrets. Rex showing when it comes to droids, he is still the king of taking them out! That droid was a real monster! Ezra is very cocksure in these episodes, as if he now believes the things he's learnt from the Sith holocron have made him almost unbeatable; but his world falls down like a house of cards when he loses the Phantom and things start to turn south putting his life in danger. Poor Chopper, he has PTSD about Y-Wings with being shot down in one in the Clone War, and now he is thrown into one by Zeb, like a toddler being put in a high chair! The Kanan rescuing Ezra scene has a lot of symbolism. Kanan is bathed in light, Ezra the dark; and what they say to each other is essentially Kanan telling Ezra to let go of the darkside, and come back to the light, to him. He hasn't been there for him these past six months, and Ezra has wandered off the path; but he is back to guide him to try to help him become a Jedi once more. RIP Phantom, you were a fine dropship for our crew! The writer who suggested to 'kill off' the Phantom became known on the team as 'The Phantom Menace'! :)

It seems that the scene with Bendu and Kanan is working on a trope - if you lose access to one of your senses (sight, in this case), the others strengthen to compensate. So… I asked this before, but… is Kanan Star Wars’ version of Daredevil now? But the more pressing matter is that he was so wrapped up in his own problems, that he completely forgot about his responsibility as a master to Ezra. And, well, that’s kind of why things have gone the way they have. Speaking of Ezra, he was always impulsive, but I get the feeling giving him command especially in his current state put even more pressure on him. Even Sabine looks at him a couple times like “who ARE you?” To be fair, being placed in charge is very tough on a person’s psyche and can change their personality. I remember one time I got put in a very stressful point of charge for a day and before I knew it I went from easy going to completely uptight. So that’s probably part of Ezra’s issue. On the lighter side if things, the dismantler droids look like evil mushroom robot rejects from Super Mario Bros… also Rex hanging out the back of the ship by Zeb’s arm… do they have chiropractors in this universe? Oh, and Rex fighting one with a crane? Is it bad that now I wonder how he would do with those grappling hook prize grab games in the arcade… 😆 It seems that Hondo got what he wanted along with the Ugnaught workers - he stole (wait for it) an Imperial Shuttle. Man, the Empire really can’t keep these things can they? I did recognize the Admiral from last season and I wonder if Ezra being a pain to his “career” is going to become a recurring theme… I think the biggest moral of this particular arc is that you’re not always going to agree with your friends, or make wise choices. But regardless of those, you’re going to show up to help when they need it. I think Zeb trying to take the blame for Ezra’s failures is telling about how supportive everyone is of each other. That being said, Ezra has a few fences to mend…. “I was not expecting a death to be the Phantom…” Me: But… isn’t a phantom already dead? Does that mean it can come back…? 👀

I’m glad things got resolved. I was worried for a second. I still can’t imagine how hard it must be for Kanan, that’s a very big change to go through. But I’m glad that’s things are getting mended. ❤️‍🩹

kamenriderhime

I'd love to see it but I have some other things lined up to replace shows that are ending!! One day!!

kamenriderhime

Me too!!!! I know, they had me worried too! Yes Kanan is brave for sure. So happy to see some resolution here as well!

kamenriderhime

Yes that line was great. Good call that there's a parallel with Obi-Wan here too. Oh yeah I think it's a good thing our characters will get some therapy lol! The music was working here for sure. Loved that scene! Ohhhh gotcha, what a cool tie-in! There's for sure a more serious tone with higher stakes!!! Can't wait for more!

kamenriderhime

Kanan had quite a journey! That scene was so powerful. Hahah Rex is the king! Yeah, Ezra got humbled a lot here for sure. Awww poor Chopper hahaha! I loved that scene between Kanan and Ezra! It was so symbolic for usre. Awww poor Phantom!!! HAHAHAHAHA as it should be, that writer should totally be referred to as The Phantom Menace!!!!!!!!!!! XD

kamenriderhime

Um I think you were onto something with the Daredevil reference! Yeah things really went awry with Ezra. Yeah command was maybe not such a great idea at this moment. It can definitely add a ton of pressure that affects you! Hahaha I can totally see the Mario reference! Oof, yeah, Rex is gonna have some knots later. HAHAHA Rex would be an absolute boss at one of those games, I have no doubt! The Empire is just cursed when it comes to shuttles! Oh good call about the Admiral, hmmm, it does seem to be a pattern lol. So true - we're not all perfect but we're there for each other still! Yes I loved that detail about Zeb trying to take the blame, it speaks volumes. Hahaha well yes technically I suppose the Phantom is already a phantom :P

I just want to also point out how much Ezra has grown connected. As you pointed out their loyalty. I don’t think Zeb and Sabine would have done that in season 1 and probably would have had to think hard in season 2. But here they are “we go down together, ride or die” also note that rarely in season 1 or 2 Sabine called him by name. It’s usually kid or some other nickname. But these two episodes she always referred to him by name. And even when he was dark side crazy she wasn’t close behind. Shipper in me went nuts but there’s no denying anymore that if nothing else. This is now officially a family. And as you said as well, Hera took it better than we expected, and we know how much she loves her ships. So what does that tell you of the value she has for Ezra now. To say nothing of all of the beautiful bond between Kanan and Ezra. As you guessed. Emotions are gonna be running high these last two seasons. (Have tissues close by. Watched ya stuff enough to know you to give you just that little warning…) anyway. I’ve rambled enough! Can’t wait to watch 3 and 4 with you this week!

kamenriderhime

Yes!! They've all grown closer for sure. So true about calling Ezra by his name too. Hahaha sometimes the shipper in us just gets set off right! Hera did take it well all things considered. But yeah I think she was like that mom that should be furious you wrecked the car but is just glad you're okay lol. OMG, I don't know if I can handle those high running emotions but I'm dying to see more!!! Thanks!!
