Hey everyone!!!  Here it is, my reaction to the second half of Tales of the Jedi!!!!  WOW it got EVEN BETTER here!!!!  Seeing Dooku's descent firsthand, finding out what ever happened to Yaddle, seeing Ahsoka's training in the context of how she survived Order 66.....!!!  Which by the way, annihilated my heart, wow!!!  And finally, seeing Ahoska's journey to becoming a Rebel!!  I rewatched this afterwards and noticed the cameo in ep 5, by the way!!!  I was mad I missed it the first time haha.
I wish they'd make 100 more eps of this!!!  There's really so much you could cover!!!!  I thoroughly loved this series!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Mental note: Mel needs to go back and listen to the music in episode 4 again. But seriously, I loved the music (and visuals) in episode 4: really awesome: it created such an atmosphere. Also the music at the end of episode 6 too!

Nick

I really felt for Dooku in episode 4, when he was standing in front of that tree at the Jedi Temple - the same tree in Yoda’s visions at the end of season 6 of Clone Wars. Someone who had started with good intentions but whom Palpatine obviously corrupted and turned by using/twisting those good intentions. Fascinating to see he had already got together with Palpatine, presumably knowing he was a Sith Lord, given he knew about Palpatine’s apprentice. And I think that the fight with Yaddle was in the same building that Dooku met Palpatine at the end of Attack of the Clones, and where in season 6 of Clone Wars Yoda saw Palpatine and Dooku in his visions - and fought Palpatine with Anakin? On the fight with Yaddle, not for the first time I frustratingly wondered why a Jedi had not called for reinforcements first.

Nick

Agree with your thoughts and feelings about episode 5, Mel. That beautiful bond between Anakin and Ahsoka was on full display again. And that scene at the end - as it swapped to Victory and Death - certainly had me tearing up.

Nick

Loved the whole series and would be well up for more - as you say, there is plenty of scope for creative storytelling with this. I think this short 6 episode series is as good as Star Wars gets, and my anecdotal impression is that lots of others think the same: I would be amazed if there is not more series to come in the future!

Brandon Dodge

While episode 6 was good, I would highly recommend checking out the Ahsoka Novel, as that episode was like a condensed version of that. Some really interesting things in that book, some of it unfortunately not really canon anymore, but still pretty good. Fun fact: the audiobook for that is narrated by Ashley Eckstein.

1x04 A blood-red sky over the Jedi Tree, telling us of Qui-Gon's death and what is to come. Great having Ian McDiarmid back for the Emperor, and Liam Neeson for Qui-Gon, as we see how Dooku has now fallen in his misguided - but not altogether wrong - beliefs about the Republic. So Yaddle (who was in Phantom Menace on the Council) didn't speak like Yoda? She spoke normally. Was Yoda taking the mick then just to confuse everyone? :P When Yaddle opens the door to bring the shining light in, its one last chance for Dooku to come back from this, whilst Palpatine is blinded in the light; but its only fleeting, it dissipates and Dooku succumbs to the darkness... Great visual storytelling. 1x05 KANAN!!!!!!!!!! Watching Snips kick ass with these remotes, was not expecting that! Like the note that it was Jesse who stunned Ahsoka, considering it was him who was leading the hunt against her and Rex in the final arc, which we see in the closing shot. The composer Kiner using the same notes as Ahsoka leaving, when Anakin speaks to her when he gives her, her lightsabre back. Perhaps this tells us how she'll have to adapt to survive after everything that happens to her; as well as saying how he thinks this is the best way to protect her; and in that ending, she says to him how she must work through things without him... 1x06 Ahsoka at Padme's funeral is just heart-breaking. This is a loose adaptation of Ahsoka's novel I believe. She was a farmer using the name Ashla (as she does here, and is of course the term for the lightside of the force) that an Inquisitor stumbles across. In that, she defeats him as she does here and uses the kyber crystals from his sabre, to make her white ones as she purifies the red blades using the force. Shame we didn't see that, but its inferred. Glad you have seen most of Rebels now Melissa, to know that Ahsoka and Bail Organa team up to form other rebels cells outside of what Mon Mothma (whom we also see at the funeral) Saw and Luthen are doing in Andor. Clancy Brown back voicing the Inquisitor here, so thats on top of Savage Opress, Ryder Ahzadi, and the Devaronian who gave Din a lot of grief in The Prisoner episode of Mandalorian! Just speaking about him the other day here too! When he asks, "and who might you be?", I can't help but exclaim, "a fu**ing legend, that's who!!!" :D

Tbf on Yaddle, she's a 477 year old Jedi Master. She's experienced enough to understand the gravitas of this situation, and isn't afraid of death, unlike the Sith standing in front of her. She went out as a Jedi.

Saltire

The Kiner's and the other composers who work on the animations, are getting better and better. Rebels is for me their magnum opus, but I have to say their latest work in season 7 of Clone Wars, Bad Batch and now this, is outstanding.

Tyler Stobbe

I got your message, thanks for the heads up - but honestly, when it comes to Clone Wars… I’m not terribly concerned about spoilers… since I’m watching Rebels side by side with you I kind of have a decent idea where things have to go. I’m sure you probably felt the same when you started that show originally - you KNEW where it was going to end up. The key thing was seeing more of how they got there. (That being said I’m still on Season 1 so please don’t tell me anything you don’t have to 😂). Okay, though, I do have to call you out because you’re complaining you don’t have enough Star Wars content to binge…. Or watch… I would like to remind everyone that when the original movies came out we had to wait three years between them. Including Empire’s cliffhanger. With nothing to fill in the gaps. Miss… you’re spoiled. :P Okay, okay, enough ranting. The first episode I think highlights something that was already an issue and some of the Jedi even realized it. The system in place was already broken before Palpatine got his hands on it. If it was working flawlessly then the sequence of events would never have been able to occur the way it did. The Empire came to power because the system failed - both the government bickering and the Jedi’s unwillingness to adapt to the environment were key things that led to their downfall. “You (Palpatine) have been on my screen for far too long!” That’s actually true, when you think about it, the Emperor’s actor has been really good about coming back and reprising his role whenever a show has needed to. Which is super cool of him, even if you don’t like the character, which you’re not supposed to, you can’t really picture him being done by another person now. The second episode kind of played on the events of the first: Ahsohka’s training by the Jedi wasn’t good enough, and Anakin realized that they needed to adapt. It’s tough love, but at the same time, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. The third episode is kind of when you come to the realization that it might feel like the world has stopped… but life goes on, people still need help, they’re still going to make stupid mistakes… and if those who have the power to do something to help them do nothing, then the Empire has already won. The Rebellion didn’t start overnight, and didn’t start organized, either. We’ll get to that later in another show, I’m imagining. As far as Yoda’s species, we’ll… Mandalorian Season 3 might tell us something? As far as who to thank for this, that’s probably Dave Filoni, his name’s all over all of the Disney Plus Star Wars animated series. He’s just doing his thing again, but that’s also probably why continuity between all of them works as well as it does.

Nick

Your last sentence about Clancy Brown: never has a truer word has been spoken! :-) And I see you were careful to avoid some Rebels spoilers :-)

Nick

On Palpatine, Tyler, surely there has never been a better villain portrayed on screen: I significantly love him and loathe him in about equal amounts, which I think is an indicator of what a great villain he is. And much of his presence on screen is menacingly manipulating, rather than actively participating - and of course we know he had considerable latent personal power in term of evil intelligence, ability with the force, and light sabres; all this adds to his aura. Then there is the screen and voice acting, and the music associated with him. A perfect storm of well scripted and portrayed villain hood.

Nick

“ She went out as a Jedi”. Oh absolutely! She hasn’t had much screen time and so we have hardly really got to know her, but I already love her character: a very memorable screen presence from this episode, with much to be impressed by.

Nick

I think this short series has been phenomenal.

Manny

I can't help but ponder a lot of this stuff. The two series coming together and delivering some new information gives a new feel to a lot of characters. The Dooku stuff and Ahsoka at Padmes funeral was fantastic and demure. In the back of my mind a character like Dooku is one I would have liked to look into more and now I have. So it gives me a new view. And I've always wondered if Ahsoka ever attended and the way she did was something that pinged my heart. It's just so amazing what the can do with these shows.

Saltire

Agreed. She was just a weird looking puppet in Phantom Menace, but they did a terrific job on her design here for this, and gave us enough insight into her character, to see what type of Jedi she was. If they ever go back to the High Republic some day, I wouldn't mind see more of her, along with some other familiar faces in their earlier years, to see them at their peak.

Saltire

I try my best to avoid spoilers, as it is a pet peeve of mine when I see others do it; but I'm not infallible to it myself admittedly, and kind of reminded Mel about the Death Star being constructed on Geonosis, before the episodes that covered it the other day in Rebels! Mind you it was in Attack Of The Clones too, so it was only a semi-spoiler for her!

kamenriderhime

Oh yes good note! I love that it's the same composers who worked on Rebels, Clone Wars and Bad Batch!!! I'll have to go back and listen for sure!

kamenriderhime

Nick - I know, this really made me see another side of Dooku! Yeah it was interesting to peg everything in the timeline here. Oh no kidding, didn't realize it was the same building! Yeah might not have been a bad idea to call for backup! At the very least, some other people knowing what was going on with Dooku could have given them some much needed info a bit sooner too. Then again, Saltire, you make a great point that she's more than capable, and I love the phrase "she went out like a Jedi"!!! I love that we actually got to know her and see her in action here!!!! I'd love to see more of her too!

kamenriderhime

Glad you agree!! Their bond is just so beautiful, it makes me both happy and sad to see it. OOF, when I realized what they were doing, it felt like I'd been sucker punched!!! I'd say the tears were totally warranted!!

kamenriderhime

For sure!! And yes, there's a lot they could still do! I couldn't agree more that what they've done is taken everything awesome about Star Wars and bottled it up in a nice 6 ep package for us here. I hope you're right, I'm totally down for more!!!!!!!

kamenriderhime

Oooh! I need to check that out! OMG no way about the audio book!!! Excuse me while I go Google this haha!

kamenriderhime

I know! It does feel like a lot is added to their characters here. Couldn't agree more! Yeah there was so much we didn't know about him, this helps fill in some blanks. Ah I know, just knowing she was there really does something to you right?! Same!!!!! These shows are fantastic, I hope they make more!

kamenriderhime

Ooh yes there was some great foreshadowing there! I realized on the rewatch that that was Ian McDiarmid, so cool!! Such a good way to put it, misguided but not necessarily wrong. Lol that's a good point about Yaddle, she doesn't speak like Yoda!!! Who knows, maybe it's just a Yoda thing? Or an epic prank lol? I LOVE the visuals of the light pouring through for one last chance for Dooku, while Palpatine lurks in the shadows. WHOA wait, Kanan?!?!! What did I miss?!?! I know, there was some tragic irony to the fact that it was Jesse. Ohhh such a good call about the music that plays, too, how fitting! What a great parallel between those two moments. I know, I can't believe she was at the funeral!! Oh it's cool that this is a loose adaptation of the novel! Whoa, so cool about how she makes her saber, would have loved to have seen that! I'm glad I've seen most of Rebels now too! Oh no kidding about Clancy Brown, so cool that he's back!!! You guys are awesome about not giving spoilers, thanks for being so considerate! The Geonosis thing really wasn't, in fact it helped me because I would have never remembered that from Attack of the Clones haha!

kamenriderhime

Tyler - good to know you're mostly okay about big-picture spoilers, I'll definitely try to avoid divulging anything too specific!! I will concede that I am entirely spoiled!!! While I do remember a brief time in the 90s where there was just not much Star Wars at all, from pretty much 97 on I haven't had much to complain about!!! :P I agree, and that's something I was just pondering not too long ago - that the system was flawed / corrupted on its own, and Palpatine just exploited the heck out of that fact. Oh for sure, I LOVE how cool the actor is about coming back! All shade to the character, but not the actor at all of course, because he's a lnd! That's so true, even the Jedi training wasn't enough. I'm hoping for more in Mandalorian season 3 for sure! Thank God for Dave Filoni!!!

Nick

In episode 6 at the start I’ve just noticed that they had Padme looking pregnant at her funeral. I’ve just checked her funeral in Revenge of the Sith and it was the same there. Of course, this subterfuge makes sense but I’ve neither noticed it before nor thought about why it was a good idea. As a slightly random aside, I think I saw Howard Shore in the music credits for Tales of the Jedi somewhere: the composer of the amazing music in the Lord of The Rings films. Speaking of which, I’ve just discovered this YouTube clip of Padme’s funeral set to the song Evenstar from Lord of the Rings: it works really well: https://youtu.be/ThsvOeTmYd0

Saltire

Kanan - or should I say young Caleb - was watching Ahoska be a boss with the training remotes early in ep 5, along with his master Depa Bilaba. On the music, the Kiner's and their fellow composers, are getting better and better. Their work on TCW was goodand at times great, but I always thought their magnum opus was Rebels. However their work since then, with season 7 of TCW, Bad Batch and now Tales Of The Jedi here, seems to show they are becoming truly great Star Wars composers. Will need to get the music for this short series, as I have all the others. The lightsabre stuff would have been great to watch, seeing Ahsoka purify and make her now iconic white sabres, especially for those who don't know her too well having only seen her in the live stuff; but the main story of that episode was about her coming to terms - to an extent (as we saw she still had to deal with what happened to Anakin in Rebels) - with what happened in the war, and then once again getting back in the fight, right before she did for the Siege Of Mandalore.

Nick

I love the atmospheric feel created in episode 4. Especially when Dooku is in the Jedi archives, which has what I can only describe as a real sci - fi feel to it, with both the visuals and the music: very different to the the usual feel of Star Wars content. And then when Yaddle and Dooku fly across Coruscant to the industrial district this is beautifully repeated again. It’s amazing and immersive even on a small screen, and so I can only imagine how it would look, sound and feel at the cinema; I reckon seeing all 6 episodes at the cinema would have been jaw droppingly good, with the emotional impact lasting for days afterwards. Gosh: imagine watching the last arc of Season 7 of Clone Wars at the cinema. Maybe fans need to petition Disney to release all this at the cinema …

Nick

Mel, one of the things I loved about episode 5 was seeing, by the last training scene on the Republic Star Destroyer, how Ahsoka took ownership of the training despite initially, and understandably (given how painful and punishing that training was), expressing discontent to Anakin. I think she took ownership through a combination of her ever present resilience and determination, along with a wish not to let Anakin down and disappoint him (part of their beautiful bond). And in episode 6, we see her amazing resilience and determination again when facing down the inquisitive: despite not having a lightsabre, and presumably not having seen an inquisitor before, her stance and face in no way displayed surprise, or fear, or malice, just complete determination and focus. You mentioned the tragic irony of the training Anakin gave her that allowed her to survive order 66, but there is arguable another such irony: Anakin arguably helped form in Ahsoka the largely perfect Jedi he was not.

Nick

And I think Tales of the Jedi was soooooo good in part because it was animated: I struggle to imagine a non-animated version working anything like as well.

Yeah Padme showing her baby bump in her coffin was always a talking point, and I took note to check for it here, and glad they incorporated it. It makes sense of course, showing her child (they wouldn't have known she was carrying twins) passed with her to avoid suspicions later. I watched the first two prequels again the other week, and though I got through Phantom fine, I couldn't finish AOTC and stopped watching right after it peaked with the Obi-Wan and Jango space battle with the delicious seismic charges. Think I might rewatch Revenge Of The Sith over the weekend, and I'm thinking now that Padme death scene will hit harder, knowing Ahsoka (and two other big players who will form the Rebellion with Bail and Mon Mothma) was there. Speaking of Lord Of The Rings, there are some links to that and... actually we can discuss all that later. I think you know what I refer to Nick.

kamenriderhime

Yes!!! They did such a great job with that. Immersive is a great way to put it. Oh I wonder if any theaters thought to do that, good point! AH!!! Season 7 too. There's a company that does screenings like that in a bunch of theaters, they show new episodes of shows premiering, anime movies, select movies, etc. Would be a perfect choice!!

kamenriderhime

Yes!!! I agree, she was determined but Anakin also had something to do with it, and her feelings for him as a mentor/brother figure. Oh yeah, I loved that moment in ep 6. WHOA, that is a huge irony, that Anakin helped mold her into the Jedi he couldn't be!!!! :O

Nick

Not sure we have companies like that in the UK, but maybe we do!?

Nick

Yes Attack of the Clones is the weakest of the prequels for me: particularly the way they handle Anakin and Padme’s relationship, and more generally the way they handle Anakin. I can think of one link between Lord of the Rings and Rebels but it will be interesting to know if there are more :-)

kamenriderhime

Oh I'm not sure! Sadly, I've never been to the UK! Honestly I'm not sure if it's a big thing in the US either, I just know I've seen it done a few times in theaters near me. It's a great idea!

kamenriderhime

Ahhhhhh yes, can't believe I missed that!!!!!!!! That's so awesome about the composers, love that they've done shows like Clone Wars and Bad Batch too. It must be nice to see their style grow and evolve. Or hear I guess lol. I know, maybe they'll show it another time?? Right, it made sense to focus on her coming back to the idea of taking a stand, but hopefully we'll still get to see it at some point!

kamenriderhime

Good call about them including the bump!! Oh no kidding, I didn't realize it was the same composer!!! Wow! No wonder it's so good. About the prequels, I find myself appreciating them a LOT more as I get older! I'm not ashamed to admit that Phantom Menace was such a huge part of my childhood that I still watch it sometimes when I'm sad or just want to feel comfy lol.

Nick

Yes it sounds a very good idea to me too :-)

Nick

Nothing to be ashamed if at all :-)

Saltire

Ah you are from the UK as well Nick? Nice. Many of the more independent cinemas are closing unfortunately, and most of the big chains only tend to show the big blockbusters these days. However since this has the Star Wars name attached to it, I think it would be a great idea to show some of these animations on the big screen, especially with the success Disney has always had with their animations there - its how they made their name after all; and it may get people fired up to see Star Wars on the big screen again, especially since we haven't had a film in 3 years, and none of the supposed new ones on the way, are that far into development - if at all. I would love to go to a concert to hear a composer do many of their more popular works whilst showing snippets of the movies these pieces are from. John Williams used to do it, but now with being in his 90's, I'd expect he's stepped back from all of that. A friend of mine who lives in Australia, went to a Hans Zimmer concert showing of many of his popular soundtracks, and he said it was great. Here in the UK, unless you are in London, then there wouldn't me much chance of getting to one of those unfortunately.

Saltire

A lot of the team behind Clone Wars when it was starting development right after Episode III in 2005, are still at Lucasfilm, working not just on the animations, but also now some of the live stuff. So at this stage, they are a well oiled crew, and there is a big difference now between what we see and hear on screen, compared to the Clone Wars movie, or the R2-D2 episodes of season 1 Clone Wars (the first episodes that were 'finished'), where they were building the entire structure of their animation department, from the ground up, and you can see where things are unfinished and clunky. I don't mind that though, as we have seen the progression of their animation styles and episode structure; until now where it is the best in the business these days, perhaps aside from Japan and its animé stuff.

kamenriderhime

No kidding! That's awesome, and yeah it's fun to see them grow as they figure things out. I agree, the animation is superb!!!!!

kamenriderhime

That's too bad that so many cinemas are closing! It's a great idea to show them on the big screen! Great idea about the concert too, what an experience that would be! I know sometimes here in the US they'll have concerts like that, based on a theme (i.e. a popular video game), but I don't think it's the actual composers you're seeing perform, but other ones covering the pieces. I'm not sure on the details and if they do that in the UK though!!! So cool that you are both from the UK!

Cody

I seriously need a second season as well as a Dooku series after this! If we get more of this, I really hope we get more backstory on Maul. We got bits in The Clone Wars but not much, I need more!

kamenriderhime

Me too!!!! I'd love to see more! A detailed Maul backstory would be awesome as well. We for sure got more in Clone Wars but there's always room for more Maul, am I right? Lol

Nick

Hi Saltire, for some reason you gave off a from the UK vibe 🙂 I’m down south near Brighton. I agree with what you say! I think I saw something online suggesting a new film was being produced, but I don’t know if that was reliable info, or what the film would be about.

Nick

I’ve always wanted to visit the US, Mel. Especially places like the Rockies and some of the many picturesque countryside bits. Some of my favourite YouTubers do survival videos in the middle of winter in the snow in the US/ Canada: love the idea of that!

kamenriderhime

That's so cool!! I hope you get to! There's some really great sights to see for sure! Whoa, those survival videos sound intense!!! I do my best to survive the snow too but in a whole different way hahaha!!! UK sounds amazing as well, I'd love to visit one day!!!!

Nick

There’s certainly lots to see in the UK! One YouTuber I like for this is Xander Budnick - especially for his winter in the snow videos: I expect it makes me think of Christmas :-)

kamenriderhime

I'll bet there is!!!! I hear great things from friends and family who have visited. That's so cool, those videos sound very fitting for the upcoming winter season!!!!
