Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 4, episode 1 of REBELS!!!!  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!  You guys, not only do we get to dig into some Mandalore stuff with Sabine's family, but guess who's back.....BO KATAN!!!!!!!!!!  Wow, that makes total sense she'd be involved, yet I'm still so shocked to see her!!  Also, we finally get to meet Sabine's dad, and I've gotta say, Sabine's a chip off the old block!!  She has a lot of both of her parents, honestly.
But you guys....nothing could have prepared me for the ending!  That escalated FAST!!!!  Also, I am SO SORRY for not realizing which weapon they were talking about right away, my mind just blanked, but don't worry, I got caught back up shortly into the next ep :)  What a way to kick off the season!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Timeline update, we are now into the final year before A New Hope. Kanan is AWESOME at the start of this episode, jumping around taking out flying bikes, troop carriers and stormtroopers, as if they weren't there. He'd give Anakin a run for his money here, showing his progression as a Jedi warrior these past 4 years now - AND he's blind!! Love him getting a bit smoochie with Hera, and Chopper exclaiming "Grrr, get a room already!!" :D A small thing, but I love that Kanan tells Chopper he can do it before patting him. Chopper has shown sadness for when Kanan got captured, but we've never seen Kanan be affectionate to Chop. Kanan and Hera (and by association Chopper) have known each other for years now, before they became the Spectres when Zeb joined; and that little pat tells me though Chopper gets on Kanan's nerves at times, he does care for that little maniac - he is one of the family, like any good pet is. Ezra is on the goofy juice these episodes, flying around like a lunatic as he tries unsuccessfully to acquit himself with the jetpack. First time we officially heard the term 'beskar' for Mandalorian armour here. Its a term coined from comics years back, and they made that term official here, after it also being known by other names too (durasteel for example). With what we see in Mando though, Din's armour really seems to make him impervious to blaster - and lightsabre - attack. With how easily some Mandalorians here in the animations get taken out with lightsabres and blasters, in my head-canon I would say these armour sets aren't 100% beskar. Din Djarin does also make the point in the episode when Fennec Shand shoots him at long range, that his beskar held up. Perhaps at shorter distances with a powerful rifle or blaster, it wouldn't? Bo-Katan is back! My favourite Mandalorian. Her eyes are a bit strange here in the design though, with them being straight-up green. In TCW, they are more yellow-green, which matches Katee Sackhoff better as her eyes are more chestnut in colour. This isn't the first time in animation major characters look different between their animated designs, and live interpretation. For example, Saw Gerrera has blue eyes, then green, before going with brown as Forest Whitaker got given the role. And Filoni wasn't bothered with Ahsoka not having blue eyes when she was appearing in Mando, and it was in fact Rosario Dawson who suggested to try the blue contacts. Its no biggie, but for Bo, its really noticeable in these eps! Anyway, when Bo is introduced to Sabine I'm surprised the latter doesn't recognise her, even if Sabine was an imperial for years. Bo was basically The Mandalore (the de facto leader of Mandalore sounded out by the clans) AND Sabine's mother Ursa Wren fought with Bo at The Siege Of Mandalore, so they obviously had history. Now tbf, Sabine would have been an infant at the Siege, but you'd expect Ursa had other dealings with Bo down the years, even once her clan sided with the Empire. I love how Sabine's father, Alrich, realises its her coming to rescue him, by the paint on the windshield! Also the timing throughout the sequence when they reunite. There are several pauses and it looks quite distant, but when he hugs and tells her, she is his daughter, its all the more beautiful. Ezra going off that cliff and trying to be Mace Windu on Ryloth, and getting it completely wrong! As a warrior, he's getting there, but he's not on the level of his great grand master yet! :D Finally we hear about the weapon that Sabine built that she has referenced, decimate fighters from her own clan. The guilt from all of this would be overwhelming.

You and Chopper having the same kind of humor is everything. Very telling. 😆😅 Kanan was giving it to them he was awesome here. Loved the moment with him and Hera. I especially loved Chopper smacking that guy with the gun. That was a "That's how we do it on my neighborhood" moment. 🔫 🤖 Everything was delightful till the end of course. Poor Sabine.

Seems like there’s a few “ship” statuses being brought up here… was Kanan actually flirting with Hera? He probably waited until he was far away and on a communicator so she wouldn’t sock him a new one. 😂 Ezra’s relationship with the jet pack is kind of like his relationship with Sabine: it got off to a rocky start with a lot of twists and turns but it seems to be working okay now. Chopper is over here just following everything from a distance: he could probably make a very interesting video archive after all this is over. Also I’m pretty sure when he whacked that Stormtrooper with the gun he was quoting a famous Bruce Willis line from Die Hard. In fact I’m sure of it. 😎 Sabine: Ezra, hurry up and get my father out! Ezra: I have to channel Keanu Reeves from Speed first and hang onto the underside of the convoy at high speed. Oh, I can think of some characters you know that wouldn’t be as eager to rescue their dad by the way. Seems like Sabine really is her parents’ daughter, it makes a little more sense after you see both of them. You seem to have filled in the hole in your head regarding the weapon, so without the context of the next episode, I’ll just point out: Sabine’s dad mentioned her mom was finding creative ways to destroy her enemies. It seems Sabine had too good of an idea, and it backfired. No wonder she left. That’s it for now, gotta catch up! :) PS: The next time I see Chopper messing around with a gun, I also want him wearing Cad Bane’s hat for style. 🤠

kamenriderhime

Hahahha to that I say, "wawawawaaa" :P Kanan was awesome and I loved that moment too! HAHAHAH what an amazing moment with Chopper, LOL that's totally what he was saying! Awww I know, what an ending :O

kamenriderhime

I mean, that's what it looked like to me! Hahaha that's so true though! Oh hey you know, Ezra and the jet pack is an awful lot like Ezra and Sabine, isn't it? I really hope Chopper is filming all this! HAHAHAHAHAHA he was totally quoting that in that moment :P LOL Ezra channeling his inner Keanu. Oh yeah, it's not a blanket statement about the dad I suppose! Yeah seeing both Sabine's parents helps things make a lot of sense. I can't believe I blanked on the weapon! But oof, yeah, that line about the creative ways to destroy rang waayyy too true here! LOL!!!! I'd die if Chopper showed up wearing Cad Bane's hat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh how I hope that happens one day!

kamenriderhime

Oh that's good to know about the timeline! Omg I love Kanan here!!! How far he's come, and having to do it without sight no less! Hahaha the flirting scene was everything, so was Chopper's response!! Aww so true about the little moment with Kanan and Chopper, he truly is a valued member of the family! Hahaha Ezra provides some good comic relief here! Oh no kidding, this was the first mention of beskar? Hmm, interesting point about the continuity...seeing as how Din was from a very different sect of Mandalorians, I think that's entirely possible! Also true about the range of the attack. Bo-Katan!!!!!!!!! Yeah her design was a bit different, actually very interesting about the other differences in designs that have happened throughout the years! Love that Rosario was the one who mentioned the contacts, she's so invested in her role!!! Oh yeah, they probably would have known each other huh? The age is one factor, but maybe Ursa just didn't mix business and family life much while Sabine was growing up? Hard to say. Omg I loved him recognizing the paint too, that's so fitting! The reunion was so sweet! Hahahha yeah Ezra's not quite there with everything I guess! I can't believe I forgot about the weapon references, but yes, the guilt must be unbearable!!

Nick

Love Bo Katan being back and I love her personal journey and how she has herself obviously been through a lot and grown and become a much wiser, much more thoughtful and a far more generous person. Her world view is closer to Satine’s now but without being Satine’s. One of the strengths of this show is seeing (likeable/ lovable) characters and relationships change and grow.

Nick

The music when Bo Katan turns up is another example of the gorgeous music used in the show to create an atmosphere/ emotional impact in episodes. And I was impressed with the way Ezra allowed Sabine to open up on the roof top by quietly asking an oblique question and then just remaining silent and allowing her to talk if she wanted to. Quite a beautiful moment that is a reflection of Ezra’s maturity and the bond that has grown between them.

Nick

Kanan is a boss in this episode: blind but agile, completely aware of his surroundings, and a formidable Jedi. I’m with Saltire on really rating Kanan as a Jedi (and there’s much more to this than just his fighting ability).

Nick

Oh, and both Sabine’s parents are awesome. More great characters to add to the long list of great Star Wars characters.

Saltire

Speaking of music, I liked the use of a sadder version of Sabine's Theme rolling into the credits. And yes, Ezra is progressing not just as a Jedi, but as a person too. He's beginning to realise when to keep schtum! With all the damage they have done to their world though, you have to wonder if the Mandalorians were on a course of self-destruction, even before the Empire comes along to almost wipe them out?

Saltire

Yeah we've spoken about it before, but of all the Jedi we have met throughout Star Wars, he's up there for me now as one of my faves. He's even ahead of Luke in my own personal ranking of fave Jedi (Anakin doesn't make it onto my list either, despite his importance hehe).

kamenriderhime

Yes!!!!! I loved her journey too! Exactly, she's still got her own experiences and views, but I feel she's learned to appreciate Satine's perspective a lot more. The writing is strong with this one :D

kamenriderhime

Loved the music! Such a good call about the theme in the credits too! Yes, little things like this really show off Ezra's maturity! And Saltire, good point about the Mandalorians. I think it shows a lot of layers to emphasize that the Empire is not their only problem!

kamenriderhime

Yes, total boss!! Whoa, that's a high ranking but totally deserved!!! Hahah I totally get the Anakin frustration!

kamenriderhime

Yes!! I love her parents and her brother, we don't spend tons of time with them but I feel like I really know them from the time we have.

Nick

She was already a much changed character in Season 7 of Clone Wars. Loved her screen presence in the epic Maul and order 66 arc with Ahsoka. They really were epic jaw dropping episodes!

Nick

I’ve always felt Anakin was mostly very likeable and had some beautiful characteristics. The trouble is those beautiful characteristics are all part of his (and everybody else’s!) downfall. I would say that we all see in Anakin things we recognise as existing in ourselves, to some extent; the main problem with that for me is then identifying him as the Chosen One - a topic we’ve discussed elsewhere :-)

Nick

I can’t remember the exact lines without watching it, but when it’s suggested that Ursa shouldn’t go on the mission to destroy the Duchess because her arm is injured I love her response - having to be held back whilst she points out she can fight just as well with her other arm: love her to bits 😁😁 A bit random here but I also love Ezra’s Freudian slip when rescuing Sabine’s dad: when asked if he was WITH Sabine 😁😁

kamenriderhime

Hahahahaha what a boss, omg!! OH I loved that little scene with Ezra being the fumbling boy who wants to date the daughter, so cute!!!

kamenriderhime

I loved Anakin in Clone Wars, even though we could often see the starting threads of how he'd be able to be manipulated to the dark side. That's so well said, honestly, I see so many very typical human traits in Anakin that I can relate to - it's crazy to think that those are part of what contributed, but it definitely adds a bit more layers to the story then just "he went bad" lol. On the other hand, I get really upset at Anakin as he's turning and after he's Vader, because it just hurts my heart so much to think of all he threw away - both on a personal level and also the damage he did to the galaxy!!! It's a complicated relationship haha but he's one of my favorite characters for how interesting his journey is - even if it is a bit traumatizing!!!
