Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 4, episode 4 of REBELS!!!!  Oh wow!!!  Yeah, I called it with Saw wanting to recruit for a mission, and also with things going really wrong at some point during the mission lol.  The last thing we need is in-fighting right now, but this does raise some good points about how you need someone who will relentlessly push ahead, and someone to stop and help all the innocent bystanders.  Oh yeah, and we are DEFINITELY doing some Death Star stuff now!  I honestly thought this would end with "Saw's ways are bad and not for us!" but the real answer was much more layered than that and I LOVE it.  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Chopper looks cute in yellow, but he doesn't act cute in this episode, he is at his maniacal best in this one, the way he is guiding the tech's, slapping one of them, then going full on barbaric with the stormtroopers, and telling those techs to 'get on effin board'! He's some droid! :D The black stormtroopers are Death Troopers. We've seen them in Andor, Rogue One, Mando and here in Rebels. They are a more elite version of stormtroopers, and tend to guard important things like the giant kyber crystal here, or guard high ranking officers like Thrawn or Krennec. In one of the early episodes, which Kanan mentions here, our crew infiltrated and took down one of these kyber crystals, and I remember telling you Mel that they were using these for something; and now you have the details, its one of the kyber crystals for the superweapon core of the Death Star; these crystals are what give the Death Star its destructive power. I like Ezra stating to Saw that his focus is making sure the prisoners get out first ahead of the mission, its not only the Jedi way, its how he's been raised by his parents and our crew; he's now acting selflessly showing how far he's become since the pilot episode when he was only in it for himself and stealing to survive. As for their departure, Saw says to Ezra "I hope we meet again" - they won't. He is off to Jedha to find out more about the kyber crystals the Empire is taking, which is where he is for Rogue One, and we know how that turns out for him and his crew. The explosion as the kyber crystal goes critical, looks like the Death Star explosion, nice continuity there. :) Yes we know what the Empire is building, but for our Rebels, they don't. Thankfully they do soon enough and are able to take it out when they get the plans and Luke joins up.

There’s a quote that was mentioned in the last RWBY volume but I think it’s quite applicable to everything that’s currently facing the Rebellion: “You can’t focus on fixing everything (at once). Simply focus on what’s in front of you.” In other words, Saw’s so bullheaded on the big picture of winning he’s missing the details, while Ezra and Sabine are concerned enough about the details that they may prolong the larger objective. Oh, we’re definitely doing Death Star stuff now. But I gotta admit, I don’t remember them ever discussing using kyber crystals but then again, I haven’t seen every series. But using the thing that creates a Jedi weapon for destruction is pretty on brand for the Empire. It’s not so much anymore about who’s right or who’s wrong in the rebellion as it is what is expendable and what isn’t. Saw’s insatiable desire for information got everyone closer to the truth but Ezra and Sabine’s insistence on dealing with smaller stuff like the prisoners gave a much needed tech support boost to the Rebels. …why did that one Stormtrooper scream as high as a girl would after the door closed? 😂 Also, you called Saw chaos… I actually beg to differ. The real master of chaos is Chopper. In fact, if he was in charge of an evacuation… oh, it’s going smoothly. Or else. He’s the GOLD standard for direction now, you know. /ducks

Dang Chopper looks good in yellow. Like I said he’s barbaric at times but it calls for it to get the job done 🌝

If Saw had more resources, he may have stopped the Death Star from ever being built. It's a good thing he didn't. I wouldn't want my childhood not to have the original trilogy. I only with my adulthood didn't have to endure the last trilogy 😪

kamenriderhime

It's not a bad point!! And selfishly, I get your point about cherishing the original trilogy haha, as much as I'd love for my poor characters to be spared the anguish of having to go through it!!

kamenriderhime

Great point and that quote is so applicable here! Saw's definitely a bigger picture kind of guy which is great, but I think you need both kinds - big and little picture. I remember from somewhere that they were using kyber crystals for the Death Star, but I honestly can't remember where I learned it now! It's very on brand though, the disgusting irony! Great point and well said - right and wrong are one thing, expendability is another. That's the thing, everyone accomplished something here - so it's hard to say whose methods were necessarily better, you know? OMG, I have no idea what was going on with the stormtrooper, and I don't wanna know! HAHAHA yes Chopper is the true master of chaos! LOL the gold standard, good one! He got that evacuation done alright....no one said he wasn't supposed to be scary while doing it :P

kamenriderhime

Hahaha yeah he's cute but fierce! Chopper is not to be messed with! He'll get it done - but watch out if you get in his way at all lol. Oh thanks for clarifying, I knew I'd seen those troopers before! So ironic and also terrible that the kyber crystals power the Death Star! Ezra is showing quite a bit of selflessness and growth here, good call. Ohhh so that's the last we're gonna see of Saw on Rebels? Thanks for clarifying the timeline! It was a nice touch that the explosions matched! I'm glad they'll find out soon, it's so frustrating not being able to yell it to them from my screen!! :P

Its not the first time large kyber crystals have been used by Sith to destroy. The Sith Temple on Malachor was powered by a giant crystal too, and there are other examples in Legends in which the first Sith Empire thousands of years back used them too for annihilation. Yes thats the final time chronologically we'll see Saw; between seeing Bo-Katan get the Darksaber in the previous arc, and now seeing the Rebel Alliance be in place on Yavin, and Saw head to Jedha; it ties in with stuff we know from other media now through the films and Mando. The focus of this show changes from next episode.

Nick

Hi Mel, not sure if you spotted that the the reason Saw Gerrera ends up on Jedha in Rogue One is because what one of the technicians they rescued in this episode said pointed Saw towards the Jedha system? So, not only are our Ghost crew central to Mon Mothma creating the Rebel Alliance of Rogue One, and A New Hope fame, in a recent episode, but Saw ends up where he does in Rogue One directly because of his adventures with Ezra and Sabine in this episode. And of course the very weapon that he is searching for in this and previous episodes of Rebels is the very weapon that kills him in Rogue One in less than a years time in the Star Wars Universe. This episode we also get the Death Troopers, as well as mention of Director Krennec, both of which feature in Rogue One. So, this is a really big arc for the cross-overs into Rogue One and very cool as a consequence of this (and of course the arc is great anyway).

kamenriderhime

Saltire - good point!! I love how they're tying everything in!!! Nick - no I hadn't spotted that, good call! WOW!! Who knew their adventures were so very important! I love that! The irony of Saw's mission to find the Death Star ultimately destroying him, quite literally. Ohh thanks for the reminder on the director, and the death troopers. Love that they are so detailed with the continuity!

Nick

I must admit that I'm not sure whether Death Troopers first appear in Rebels or Rogue One, but I suspect it is Rogue One. However, there was overlap in time between the production of both, and obviously some deliberate and neat cross-over between the two, I think probably particularly with season 4 of Rebels.

kamenriderhime

I'm not sure either! But yes the cross-referencing seems intentional since they were being made simultaneously!
