Hi Hime :) 4: I'm your mother Aardman is the studio behind Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep. We still have the theme of vision, but in the sense of the perception that others have of us and the one we want to convey. We can add the vision that a mother has of her child. There are several references to Anakin/Vader and Luke: 1: The "I'm your mother" as you said 2: The heroine is called Anni and seeks to have a better life while being a good pilot, like Anakin in episode 1 3: Antagonist Dorota Von Reeple and her mother have a hairstyle that evokes Vader's helmet, uses a mini Death Star as a weapon. 4: Red leader and the red squadron is a reference to Luke this time. It was a rather realistic episode (in its themes), sweet and fun. 5: Journey to the dark head The theme of vision this time is in the sense of seeing the future, but also of perspective in relation to the duality between the light and dark side of the force. Whether in relation to the protagonist, but also when the heads change itself, which in my opinion and after what Toul says, evokes the fact that a person on the light side can switch to the dark side and vice versa. Nothing is immovable. The Mir studio is the studio that animated Avatar the last Airbender and Legend of Korra, but also Voltron and Kipo for Netflix among others. I love our duo and their growing friendship. Toul needs to grow as a Jedi and Ara has quite a character (which almost reminds of a certain smuggler who, despite his name, does not work solo). In the end, they did cut off the head of the dark side, but not in the way they thought. 6: The spydancer This time, we have the theme of vision in relation to what is hidden from our vision, via espionage, but also in relation to the past of our heroine and her son, whose origin was hidden from him. Funny when you know that the studio is La Cachette, which translates into English as the hiding place, to have an episode with spies hiding in a bar. La Cachette studio had already made an episode for Love Death and Robot, but also the Primal series directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter Lab, the Super Nana, Samourai Jack but also the Clone Wars mini-series). They continue to work with Genndy on his new series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, which is currently on Adult Swim and has a very retro look (Popeye, early Dysney, Astro Boy). It's a French studio and the voice cast is too, like Lambert Wilson who played the Merovingian in Matrix for example or Camille Cottin who played in House of Gucci. You're not wrong when you think of fire with her second performance. I think that's exactly it, the first is very airy and ample, ideal for hiding and evoking hidden feelings, the second is more lively and the orange tint reminiscent of the flames evokes the rage and anger that boils in it. Which ends up with her outfit completely ripped apart, yet again evoking the feelings inside her. I would just end on the subject of the aerial dance and ribbons, a symbol both of life that hangs by a thread, of the bonds that we tie between people but also of the thread of destiny that we evoke. often in this kind of story. I have the impression of analyzing this one too much and favoring it because I am French ^^'. But frankly, this one has a lot of thickness and level of reading, all like our heroine wearing several layers of clothes to perform her dance and it's so fascinating to analyze all that hehe. I've already seen the next three and I already know that some will make you react again, whether emotionally, but also that the last one, knowing one of your passions, will really please you aesthetically.

Stylistically, Spy Dancer really made me think of Ernest and Celestine. It's not from this studio but it is a French production and super sweet and nice.

Someone may have mentioned this already but Aardman Studios (behind the first episode) is extremely well known for their stop motion animated movies, such as Wallace and Gromit. So obviously, the first episode is a UK production, the second came from South Korea, and the third came from France. The overriding theme of this batch seemed to be finding a balance. The mom in the first is a little extra, even to the point where her child is embarrassed to be associated with her. We’ve all been there. Even those of us fortunate to have parents who were responsible and caring individuals, they had things that drove us nuts… and the same is true for the opposite for those who have children. The difference was how they did things when it mattered - the other kid with the elitist mom was an example of the exact opposite. Why is her kid so horrible? Look who she’s learning her lessons from, meanwhile Anni’s mom fumbled a lot of the small stuff but she was there when it counted. The second one is definitely my favorite just because I really like the visual look of it. This one is more about making the point that you can’t have only light, or only darkness - they must coexist in order to balance each other. If there is no darkness, one cannot understand the value of light. The Sith/Jedi dynamic has always seemed like more of a visual interpretation of your inner struggle with emotions. Will you let your emotions decide your actions, or will you stay in control enough to make the right decision? It’s not unhealthy to feel these things, but how you deal with them is what’s important. Because there was a Palpatine, there was also a Skywalker. Because there was a Rey, there was also a First Order. No one chooses their circumstances, it’s what you do with them. And as for the two of them bickering about the crashed ship at the end… I think I might see another on the horizon… pun intended… The last one is French so obviously they’re spending a lot more detail on artistry and movement and weaving the story around it. I got a few Luke vibes from the girl at the start wanting to do more, the kids are always so eager and impatient. The officer being her son was quite a clever twist though. I believe the name for the condition is heterochromia, it’s been brought up when Neo has been discussed, but the interesting thing here is how it’s portraying the Empire. You say it often, the Empire sucks, but it definitely is taking some of its cues from world history. If you recall WW2, the Nazis believed all humans should only look a certain way and believed in that dominance to the point they tried to eliminate any… irregularities, to put it politely. So the Imperial Officer having to hide his physical condition for fear of retribution, goes right along with that. It’s subtle - but then again, France would probably have more insight into the type of oppression here than any other country and it’s interesting how they wove real world threads into the story. For the most part, it seems like every studio is just creating their own characters, they’ve been given the building blocks from everything else and now they’re just making up their own story at recess and bringing it to life. Come on, you know we all did it at some point. In a way, we’re all… canon adjacent. 😁

This really was appropriate for Mother’s Day. This first one was really cute. It made me want to hug me mom. The second, has a great showing of how nothing is ever permanent. Don’t think you’re at a dead or have to give in to something. Maybe even embrace it so you can use it for better later on. Lastly, ugh carry some toilet paper it’s much easier to grab and want run out as fast. Another reminder of how the war destroyed and separated so many families. Man I would also watch a full series on that one 😭

kamenriderhime

I agree!!! Awww wasn't it just so cute! So true about the second one, it was a great message! And omg so true about the toilet paper hahaha!! Yeah that last one really hit hard right!!!! They did great with the time they had!!

kamenriderhime

Oh nice, thanks for the info! Balance as a theme can definitely be seen here! So true that from the lighter-hearted tones of the first one about the mom being a little extra lol, to the second one about how there's light and dark in everyone/thing, that's a big theme. I love the style of the last one! Yes, that's the name for the condition, I know I'd read it before about Neo but couldn't remember the name. That's so true that much of the Empire has been taken from real life events, and I hadn't even thought about that, that France would have a unique perspective. I liked the twist too! Lol it is like bringing a really, REALLY good fanfic to life isn't it!!! Hahaha I'd like to think we're all canon adjacent for sure :P

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) I love this assessment! I can definitely see the theme of vision in the first one, and I love the nods to other Star Wars concepts/characters. I love the theme of balance and vision in the second one as well, and that's so cool about the studio! I didn't know that! They did accomplish their mission, just not how they thought. Ohhh good call about the last one being about obscured vision!! I couldn't wait to hear your thoughts as soon as I learned it was from a French studio!! :D It sounds like La Cachette has quite a resume already, and that's so interesting about the name in relation to this ep! So awesome that the cast is French as well!! I love the symbolism of the ribbon dancing. There's so much detail with it comes to the artistic vision in this one! I've seen the last three and can't wait for you to see my reaction!! Hope you love it!! Thanks for all the info!!!

Episode 4 was the only one I felt wasn’t as good as the rest. It’s still cute and funny, I just preferred the styles and stories of the rest. I did get a good laugh with the Wedge reveal though. Episode 5 had me really excited, cause I recognized the studio as the one that worked on Legend of Korra! It was nice having one more anime style short, even though I do prefer the diverse styles of this season. Now that I think about it, the Jedi and and Sith in this one kinda remind me of Robin and Slade from Teen Titans in terms of their relationship. And the music during the fight was awesome! Episode 6 is so beautiful animated, I can’t imagine how hard it is to animate fabric like those ribbons. I love the idea of a cabaret in Star Wars, it was so Star Wars but still really similar to our world. The reveal of the son really got me emotional, the way they went about building to that moment was perfect.

kamenriderhime

I hear you! The Wedge reveal was awesome! That's so cool that it was the same studio as Legend of Korra!! In can totally see that comparison, Teen Titans is another show I love. The music was so well done! Omg I know, can you imagine the intricate animation for the ribbons! It was gorgeous! The twist was sooo good and so emotional!!! I love that Star Wars is so unique yet has so many things similar to our world, too! Glad you overall had fun with this batch!!!

Episode four was hilarious, although thats to be expected from Aardman who are well known in the UK and won loads of Oscars back in the day for Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Shaun The Sheep. Their humour is so British. Great that we got a bit of Wedge (and voiced too by Denis Lawson who played Wedge in the films!) as the host of this pilot competition, and the mother welding using a Mandalorian helmet was genius! :D The girl is called 'Anni' too, got to be a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Phantom Menace there! They also had a picture of Hera too in their house, whom naturally would be a hero to a Twilek girl pilot for sure. Was reading that Chopper is in there someplace too, but I'll need to seek that little maniac out! Loved the mini Death Star gun as well from the haughty antagonists! So much fun! Episdoe five starts with the girl reading the stone, like a prophecy, with the old mentor looking on and interpreting it in an unbiased way, which the girl dislikes, even after he explains about war and peace being a constant. This to me feels akin to the Whills concept which Lucas used when writing Star Wars. The Whills told the story of the galaxy, and the events we see in the franchise are from the Journal Of The Whills (supposedly). To me this helps explain certain events which people may interpret in different ways, as they are stories that may be told to the Guardians Of The Whills and certain moments may be different, depending on the interpretation, whilst the general story remains similar. For example, in the original trilogy when Lucas set it all out, R2-D2 was to be our Keeper Of The Whills, and the events of those films would be told from his point of view. It was never fully fleshed out (and in the first original draft it was to be the story of "Mace Windy"), and the concept switched to the force itself, so I think this episode is nodding a bit to all that. I do always like with Sith v Jedi duels, that especially for the Jedi, its not just a fight for their lives, its for their very soul. Do they give in to anger to strike down the Sith and become the very thing they swore to destroy, or are there other paths. This duel shows this inner battle very well. For the rest of the story though, about why the girl wants to destroy the head, and whether it will make a difference, it didn't grip me like perhaps it should. I just felt there was something missing either in my understanding of the episode, even with the no light without the dark theme (not very Lucas, hence why this one will always be non-canon) or the execution of it as the fight climaxes. Glad you enjoyed it greatly though Mel; thats a good thing about this series, its never about one main theme and we will all have our favourites amongst it. Spy Dancer however I enjoyed immensely. Love the idea that there are actually cultured stormtroopers of all shapes and sizes wanting to enjoy a bit of culture, whilst being tracked by the dancer and the rebels during the show. The moment of reflection about those that have been slain by the Empire, whilst performing from them, hits heavy, but its the reason they do this. The 'dance' too is gorgeous, as the performers dress makes all those shapes as she darts majestically around the room, and has the troopers in raptures whilst not noticing her placing the trackers. I did not see the twist with the imperial officer being her kid until the reveal later. Love the patch covering his eye but that though he doesn't take it off at the end, he understands that Louie is his mother. Then as we fade out we hear beeps on the COMM; he is contacting her... A very affecting episode.

kamenriderhime

That's so cool about Aardman! I didn't know before I watched this that they had done so many other things! I love that Wedge made an appearance, and how awesome that it was his original actor doing the voice! The Mandalorian helmet was such a nice touch!! Whoa, I didn't notice the picture of Hera, Chopper, or the death star gun! Wow!!! I noticed the Anni reference though haha, well played! Oh wow, I had no clue about the background with the Whills!! That's like a whole other plot concept! It's cool that they did a reference to it. So true about the Jedi/Sith battles. The stakes are high! I hear you about the other story elements - it strays a bit from the light/dark concept for sure. I guess these stories are good for exploring different concepts, even ones that slightly go against what George Lucas had in mind. Well said, there's something for everyone in the series as a whole! I loved Spy Dancer so much!!!! I don't know if you're a Star Trek fan too, but I just last night watched an episode of Voyager that had a very similar plot. It makes sense that stormtroopers would need entertainment too, and also that there would be different shapes/sizes amongst stormtroopers. The dance is totally enrapturing and so visually well done! And I agree that the concept of doing this while reflecting on the Empire and the damage it's caused is interesting. I love the twist!!! Such a great way to end the ep too, with the fade out / comm signal!!!! It was incredibly emotional and well done!

Was reading more about the "I Am Your Mother" episode and in the marketplace we see a hand in a jar, its supposed to be Luke's hand that Vader severed! And of course in that duel when that happens, he loses his father's Youngling Slayer 5000 lightsabre. This is placed next to the hand in the market and we see a long orange arm swipe it. In the sequels when Rey visited Maz Kanata, and the lightsabre was in her possession, many wondered how she got her hands on it; well here's the unofficial answer! :D Yes I do love me some Trek, but haven't watched it outside of the rebooted films, since Enterprise was airing. Tried to find a way to check out Prodigy on your recommendation and Picard season 3, but had no joy yet. I couldn't get into Voyager nor DS9 when they were airing, as I wasn't fond of the casting in parts so I could never settle into both shows. I know Janeway is supposed to be in Prodigy however. Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and sub up to Paramount+ to get them! ;)

kamenriderhime

Whoa, no kidding, that's awesome!!!! HAHAHAHA nooooo the lightsaber name, it's so good lol!!! Wow, who knew they snuck in an answer to that question here!!!! That's amazing! It's tough to check out the new series without getting a subscription, they're not really widely available any other way unfortunately! Interesting, I'd be curious to know what you thought if you watched them now! Voyager in particular feels like a product of its time so there's definitely some 90s-ness in it at times haha. But yes, Janeway or one iteration of her is a main character in Prodigy! Although it's not really essential to have a lot of background info on her to follow the plot (since most of the viewers for this series probably weren't even born when Voyager was airing lol). Let me know what you think if you get to check them out!!!

2x05 is the most "anime" of these VISIONS in Sn.2, which is what I loved about Sn.1, but also cute to see Aardman Animation get into the Star Wars storytelling biz....(2x04).

John J Ronald

2x05 the young seer only fully understands her vision when she's in the thick of it and trying to save her Jedi companion....and also seeing that neither head is pure light or pure dark....and destroying one would destroy the balance. They both needed this mission to grow and learn and process their past trauma.

John J Ronald

Spy Dancer definitely has a "occupied Paris during WW2" feel to it....by design, I'm sure.

kamenriderhime

I can definitely see that! I love the anime style too, and really enjoyed Aardman's story too! 2x05 was really well done and insightful for sure!
