Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to Red vs. Blue season 14, episodes 9 - 12!!!  WHOA!!!!!!!!!  I never ever EVER thought we'd be getting this origin story, or at least background story!!!!  Why on earth was a rooting for Felix of all people for just a bit!
It's like Vic said, no one is born bad I guess....!  It was an interesting look at what this partnership used to be like, not to mention some signs of the slippery slope that most likely led them to where they ended up.  To top it off, we had a fun "recruitment" video which was the perfect palate cleanser lol!!!  What a great batch!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Locus's name- Samuel Ortez Felix's name- Isaac Gates Sirus's name- Mason Wu Here is the thing about Felix, he is a complete douchebag. He is a scummy, narcissistic, entitled, sociopathic control freak. Traits that usually when combined is a sign of a bad or annoying villain. But Miles did something smart with the Chorus Trilogy. He introduced him as an ally in unfamiliar territory, the first window into one of the sides of the civil war. This forces the viewer to trust him. Giving him this "WTF" sense of humor and making you laugh at his dark comedy (ie. The Hindenburg joke at the end of season 12 episode 5). The viewer's indoctrination is what makes Felix so damn likeable and is a tribute to Miles as a writer.

I never noticed that Felix's full name is in the credits before. You hear the other two in the episodes, but not Felix. But right in the credits for the last one, it says Isaac "Felix" Gates. My take is that this is definitely post-war. Locus already has his scars, both literal and figurative, and Felix is already poking at him to keep reminding him that he's unfixable. Subtle jabs and literal shouting at him that he's crazy. I will make fun of every writer that succeeded Burnie, Miles included, but he absolutely nailed it with Locus's story. And you know, I don't think Washington gets enough credit for breaking Locus out of his rut so that he could see what he'd become. But besides that, every piece of this short series informs the two characters we know from the series. As dangerous as Locus is, Felix is the one who got him on the wrong side of the law. Without Felix's greed, everything would have been different. And as much as I was expecting Wu to die the first time I saw this, I think it's pretty safe to assume that he bailed on them when he saw who Felix really is, and that that event pushed Locus more under Felix's control. Locus is shocked and appalled when Felix casually condemns most of their team to death in season 13, so it has to have been Wu that Locus views as the betrayer, not Felix. Or Wu just died somewhere along the way, but I like the first explanation better. I don't want to spoil your expectations by telling you which number it is, but there's an episode coming up next week that I'd bet money will be your favorite of the season. No spoilers, just hype.

Hehehe… we’ll, since you just asked I’ll describe Season 14 like this - it’s a grab bag. You toss a bunch of different ideas you want to explore in, pull one out and - all of a sudden you get Felix and Locus prequels. Speaking of which, Siris is a character invented for this arc, you did not see him before. And, also…. you can kind of see where the descent started to happen with these two - what is that line, the road to hell is paved with good intentions? Everyone, including Felix, thinks they’re the hero of their own story - even when they’re the villain. Maybe that’s what sets people off so much about him? Or it could just be Miles twisting the knife. Wouldn’t put it past him. But you know the whole silhouette fighting style and the manner of some of the kills reminded me a lot more of Quentin Tarantino’s filmmaking style, especially Kill Bill. So I wonder if this might’ve been inspired by that. Did you ever want to know how the Freelancers got so many RED soldiers to sign up and battle the BLUE team? It’s because they needed RED and BLUE people to believe in. Also Caboose may have unwittingly encouraged several less than mindful BLUE candidates to switch sides. It’s amazing what they can do with RED and BLUE video edits these days, is t there? Although everyone’s face being a RED vs BLUE helmet was a nice touch. Personally o think BLUE time might be slightly more important as the RED team is always just along for the ride. I should probably stop. I’m saying RED and BLUE in weird ways now without even trying to. Who knows what the grab bag will have next week?

I forgot to say it earlier, but the reason you’re gravitating towards Felix and Locus is simple - better the devil you know then the devil you don’t. Another example, you might despise the Star Wars Empire and Palpatine, but when the story involves them, you kinda know what to expect. Instead of an unknown commodity, it’s a FAMILIAR obstacle, and it’s just like “here we go again with THESE jokers.” In short term description, these characters are all the unwanted relatives that show up for the holidays. 😂

Manny

Oof cheering for Locus. They got me good.

Ah, finally! I can give you my favorite fun fact from the Mercs Trilogy. There was an unused subplot involving Siris' neighbor, where Siris' wife, Megan, was going to have an affair with the neighbor's wife, because Siris was always out doing mercenary stuff. https://twitter.com/TheMilesLuna/status/1603252690976391169?s=20

Whoa! I didn't even catch Felix's name! I mean, I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but THIS ^ That's a great way to put it! We get to know Felix as someone helping us and he really brings it with the jokes - it's all written so cleverly! Miles outdid himself both on writing and acting!!!

kamenriderhime

Ohhhhhh ok I was wondering how I missed it haha! That makes sense about this being post-war. I noticed the poking as well. I couldn't agree more about the Locus story! And so true, my man deserves all the credit haha. So true, Felix was the one who got Locus on this path. I actually really like that explanation about Wu, too - that his leaving/"betrayal" was another brick in the wall of Locus falling under Felix's control. Whoa, I can't wait for that episode!!!! XD Thanks for being vague so I'm as in the dark as possible, it's more fun that way lol!

kamenriderhime

I know right!!! Like after everything, how did they make a story where Felix and Locus are instantly so likable!!!!

kamenriderhime

Grab bag is the best way to put it! Oh good, I'm glad I didn't forget! That line applies perfectly here! He definitely thinks he's the hero of his own story. Hahah well I wouldn't rule out twisting the knife! Ohhhh I can totally see the Kill Bill inspiration! HAHAHAHAHAHA I'm totally reading the "RED" and "BLUE" out loud in that monotone copy/paste voice :P I mean, I think that is true about the devil we know! Familiarity does take away some of the sting!! It's the predictability, like you said. HAHAHAHA omg!!! What a way to put it, that's amazing!!

Cody

This is what I was looking forward to! This trilogy is one of the highlights of the season, I never thought we’d get this. And I really like the art style, it reminds me of the Borderlands series. Also I was wondering why Siris sounded familiar, I completely forgot till the credits that he was Chris Sabat! I wonder if this is around when they got him for Watts on RWBY.

kamenriderhime

WHOA, that's what Siris sounded familiar!!! I wonder too! And I agree, this is just so cool and I'm so glad we got it! The art is really well done and I'm just thrilled to be able to see a story like this!

2023-08-08 19:23:25 This is probably my favorite stretch of episodes in a row because while there are single episodes I love a lot of them going ahead I only like or almost love. I love this cel shaded kind of animation and while it isn’t the best animation it looks really good & the stylized nature of the animation works really well for what they were going for with the fight scenes matching alongside the music and dancing. I really enjoy the music in the club it’s a bop. Also it’s really interesting that the start of the episode was a cold open with no voice acting. I love how Locus & Felix have green and orange ties matching their armor colors in the future. Because of the echoing and small modulation effects the characters are given because they wear suits its hard for some to realize who they are at 1st but I knew right away and it’s great to see how quickly you had an interesting of who they were. We get some great banter while they are talking in the bathroom. They are similar but different to how we saw them in the future like Felix’s sarcastic/joking personality and how much more serious Locus is although they are both more relaxed then in the future. It’s interesting to to see what they look like and their builds match what we know about them as characters & the details are nice to learn like Locus having an X shaped scar on his face which interestingly matches what his helmet in the future. The poor guy just wanting to go to the bathroom LOL. However this moment shows the differences in them in the past since they just knock the guy out instead of killing him. Seeing them at work is impressive but extremely scary with how methodical, quick and smart they are. The episode does a great job showing the intensity of what’s going through the guards minds while they are captured & subsequently killed. Clever way to warn the other guards unfortunately while it makes their mission harder Felix & Locus are too smart to fall for something so simple. I love how they use the smoke ombs to create these really cool silhouette fights and doing a great job of matching the movements to what’s going on in the club downstairs. This also shows how mostly in sync they were back then which is a stark difference to how we originally came to understand them as characters. The mistake followed by Felix freaking out on Locus is genuinely funny. The most shocking part of this is that they are going after someone who has done terrible crimes and are the good guys in this situation. Arguing about what went wrong fits but the 2 of them talking is noticeably not manipulative or mean/angry. And then we get to meet Sirus someone they seemed to have been working with in the past who has a really cool voice I believe the voice actor is Christopher Sabat which is awesome. And no you were not supposed to know who this is from prior information in the show no worries. And after the episode we know how Vic’s before episode monologue connects to this story. The silence at the start of episode 10 really sets the tone I feel. It sucks that there was a corrupt cop in a high place and even though it’s small part I like that the episode went into the idea. It makes me think about if there is so much corruption how are you supposed to do good which is probably what they were thinking about. And then we get to see darker side of Felix who at this point is morally grey going straight to Ransom. I love how easily you can feel how against this Sirus is with his voice acting and it shows that he is a very principled man. At this point Felix does really believe in doing good and is actually making messed up but good points about taking away stuff from Lozano. It is interesting that Sirus brought them together because he thought they could be something more & it says that the others have a lot of respect for him. I think at this point Locus believed more in doing good than Felix but is more receptive to pragmatism than Sirus especially when he can think of how this idea will be able to help the city. Of course Felix would be the one to call the crime boss when he believes he’s good at talking to people. And it did seem like it was going well at 1st with the confidence & making it clear how serious they were using his sons voice as some leverage. Unfortunately they underestimated how much Ruben did not care about his son. And it makes sense with the type of criminal he was said to be and with what little we saw of him it makes sense that his son would be fucking up his father’s business with how spoiled/privileged he sounds. Also the voice for Ruben sounds perfect for a criminal like him. And this was when Felix was way less experienced and his as he calls it “people person” skills were not as good as he thought they were. The really terrifying part isn’t even the physical threats it’s the psychological attack that he knows who they are and can hurt their loved ones. I like the reasoning of how he knows where they are with the chip because it makes sense for a man like him to do things like that. Also it’s not surprising that the son would use his father’s influence & money as a way to have sex with women since we know the horrible crimes he has committed. It’s cold and scary but I like that while the others are losing it Locus is able to remain calm because it fits his character and he probably killed the son because the son would no longer serve a purpose for them. I like the feeling that the start of episode 11 is calm before the storm. Mason was lucky that they would not have known who he was having been the one to watch the outside of the club. I like Locus being the more reasonable one when it comes to Sirus wanting to leave to protect himself and his wife. And it makes sense that Felix being who he is would be more angry but the big difference from the future is that he’s willing to listen to others input and shows actual caring/understanding. I love how they set a trap by pretending they still wanted to negotiate and that Gabriel was still alive to create perfect targets for a sniper. The teamwork on display while they are showcasing their skills is really awesome/impressive especially when they don’t have a lot of time/moments to communicate with each other. Also all the little traps they set up are cool. I like when Felix throws the knife but that skill is not good yet only knocking the guy out showing he would have those skills in the future like we know. Sirus’s martial arts skills are so bad ass with how quick he is while showing a lot of strength. Also him sticking around shows his honor and his caring towards his partners. He was brutal but effective with how he took out his opponents. I think it’s great to see Felix & Locus come to his rescue. I think Sirus’s look at Ruben’s last words is him realizing that what happened is a slippery slope like you were saying. Also don’t worry at this point Felix is likable/enjoyable and not a piece of garbage. The best part of this story might be that we learn the real names Felix being Isaac Gates & Locus being Samuel Ortez and Sirus being Mason Wu but that’s less interesting. My theory for what happened to Mason is that he died on a mission or left the mercenary life behind at some point and without a moral compass being there the others as well as someone who made Felix want to be better it eventually led to what they later became. The 2nd option is more hopeful but unfortunately it was probably the 1st option. This was such a great origin story for these characters. Also learning about the scrapped subplot with Megan cheating on Mason having an affair with the neighbors wife from the comments is crazy. Episode was 12 was definitely a nice pallet cleanser after the more serious nature of the other episodes. These propaganda videos are so hilarious especially the interviews not helping the people making the video. I’m glad this episode made you laugh so much. Making one video just substituting terms when necessary is a great joke LOL. Awesome reactions & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

This is such a great mini arc, I couldn't agree more! The visuals, music, etc. I'm glad I was able to catch on fairly quick, yay! It's awesome to actually see them, see how they interact, etc. And that's a good call about the scar matching the helmet. The guy who just wanted to use the bathroom LOL! It's really interesting to see how they work, and just how brilliant and clever they really are. Also good point that they're not big on killing here. The banter and freakout are just amazing LOL!!! And no kidding that that was Chris Sabat, he's a legend!! Felix is definitely the talker of the group but yeah, they gauged Ruben all wrong. Oh good, I'm glad I didn't miss something! Yeah no surprise I guess that things take a darker turn with Felix once things start to head south. I agree that Locus is more pragmatic but still doesn't want to intentionally do something wrong either. I know, it was scary to see how even someone as manipulative as Felix (although I guess it's implied he wasn't quite as bad at this point) really had no idea of just how sleazy and awful this person really was. That's a good point that Felix at this point is actually willing to hear him out on wanting out of the situation too. I love that they set up the trap!!! I couldn't believe I was actually rooting for them lol. I agree, the team work was awesome and you could see Locus even has room for improvement too. The martial arts were pretty great as well! I love that we got to know the real names and thank you for excusing me for wanting to like Felix at this point haha! That's actually a great theory about Mason and it fits! Wasn't that nuts about the subplot?! This was such a great arc for sure! Hahaha the propaganda ep was awesome, it definitely tickled my funny bone!!! Thank you so much for all your awesome support and feedback!!! Sorry for the delay!!! I always enjoy reading what you have to say!!!
