Such an amazing episode, and what a great start to what has been my most anticipated Star Wars series so far! I'm so curious about these two new force users we met in the cold open. Dude straight up stole Ahsoka's line saying "We are no Jedi." xD But at the same time, I don't quite think they are Sith. I can't see Sith working as hired guns for anyone, and their lightsabers are much more orange colored compared to a Sith blade. But maybe I'm just being too nitpicky. The temple Ahsoka gets the map from looks VERY similar to the mural of the Father, Daughter & Son on Lothal, but according to Morgan (who is confirmed to be a descendant if the Night sisters! Holy crud!) it was made by the Night sisters. So either they have a connection to that trio or it's something else. On theory, is that the symbol on the floor that helped Sabine figure the map out is actually based on the real life Celtic Trinity Knot, which is also a wiccan symbol for three other important figures. The Maiden, The Mother and the Crone. Very interesting stuff. Also so good to see Huyang again. The fact that he is apparently still 75% original parts is absolutely astonishing considering he's apparently been around since the very founding of the Jedi Order Twenty-Five THOUSAND years ago! I expected him to just be a cameo based on the trailers, but it seems like he's going to be following us as a primary character which has me THRILLED! Super surprised and delighted to see Clancy Brown returning to once again play Ryder, and this time in LIVE ACTION! You can tell the designed his Rebels character to really look like him! xD Also, while I'm sure the Loth Cat was CGI in at least some of the shots, I know they have Ana ctual puppet version at Galaxy's Edge, so this is probably a more advanced puppet version of that. Absolutely adorable! Ahsoka and Sabine seemed to DEFINITLY have had some history go down in-between rebels and this show, so curious about the extent of it, and what exactly went down. All and all I think this was an absolute banger of a start to this series, as was your reaction to it! Keep up the amazing work. I can't wait to see you react to episode 2, and then I guess we'll all just have to start waiting once again... until next week xD

Ray Stevenson was also in Rebels so it really must have been extra hard for Filoni and company to lose him. If you haven't seen RRR I would highly recommend it. He is the villain and is so good in a mustache twirling Machiavellian way. Also I LOVE that they got Kevin Kiner to do the music as he also did the music for Clone Wars and Rebels. It really gives it a sense of continuity on top of being awesome in general.

I managed to carve out a chunk of time before I get busy for this, so here goes: Of course they were going to throw the whole fake out thing and introduce the bad guys first - I mean, the jab at Jedi never having a straight line - well, I suppose we have to give them something to DO or it’d be a little dull? 😉 Anyway, I kind of picked up on the whole Nightsister vibe when I looked at the temple drawings before anyone said anything… also can we call out the Indiana Jones references in that scene? I wonder if we should let people know on the tag that there’s no way to avoid Rebels spoilers for this series lol - it’s literally impossible. I wasn’t expecting to see Hera first though, although it makes sense. It kind of says something that the place Sabine decided to settle down was Ezra’s old hideout, doesn’t it? I mean you can say different things, but your actions speak louder than words. The governor is Adzadi (Sp?) who was one of the key Lothal insurgents during the Rebels series, that’s why he’s looking familiar. Okay so I’m not the only one who got thrown for a loop by Sabine apprenticing under Ahsoka then… I was thinking, I don’t remember covering any of that. “Some times the things we do for the right reasons still have the wrong consequences.” Ahsoka is talking about her walking away from Sabine, it sounds like they both kind of butted heads (my guess - they have personalities that are far too similar - like two magnets of the same polarity), but she could also be harboring some self guilt about what happened to Anakin after she left the Council. It could’ve been the right choice, like she said, but everything went so wrong after she left, you can’t help but ask the question. Oh and it’s clear Sabine was outmatched - seems she held her own for a while but it was obvious that wasn’t going to last… although, pushing a lightsaber through her and then cutting to black… and then Dave Filoni has the cheeky nerve to put his name on the end credit writer/director scroll immediately saying “I went and did this to you.” I see you, you smug little… 😅 Oh, and as if we didn’t have enough fun already let’s throw David Tenant’s voice acting back into the mix as a nice little sundae topping. Although I can’t remember if Baylan was a character from the original arc or not. That’s all I have time for today, will try to catch up as soon as possible! 😁

Hi Mel, I hope you are well: from your reaction you seem to be 🙂 As you know, I prefer all Star Wars to be animated, and truth to tell I wish the Ahsoka series was animated, but even so I think they have done an amazing job of the first two episodes. I was really excited about this show and I have not been disappointed at all! It’s great to see your excitement too 🙂 There are so many references to other Star Wars content and I’m sure I have not spotted it all. At the start we have all the military uniforms associated with the original trilogy. Later the dark Jedi apprentice used one of those little hover droids to track Sabine back to Ezra’s tower. This is just like when Maul (as Palpatine’s apprentice) did the same on Tatooine looking for Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi Wan. Throughout there were so many references to help make it feel a continuation of the Rebels series - in effect, Rebels season 5. A lot of the music was from Rebels eg for Hera and Sabine, but also during the end credits it was Rebels music with - as you pointed out - a medieval feeling twist, which I really liked, along with the imagery. I think you missed Clancy Brown playing Ryder Azadi? He looked just like Ryder from Rebels and of course was his voice actor then: the voice actor for Mr Krabs strikes again! And he pushed (now senator, I think he said) Jai Kell to the front to speak to the crowd while he got people to look for Sabine. Jai Kell was originally rescued by Ezra when undercover as a trainee trooper and was involved in taking back Lothal in season 4 of Rebels. I loved the way they made Lothal look in live action - just the same as in Rebels, especially the highways, surrounding grassland and Ezra’s tower. And the main city looked the same as in Ezra’s vision after he found out his parents were dead, and as it looked right at the end of the last episode of Rebels. The acting was great for Hera and Sabine particularly, but I do think Natasha Bordizzo shone as Sabine. This episode seems to link to that Mandalorian episode where Ahsoka turns up looking for Thrawn. I assume that is where and when Morgan Elsbeth is taken prisoner?? I think that puts us at about 9ABY? It’s great to have the NightSisters link to the show through this character, and I have the feeling her costume is NightSister style? It looks like the droid Huyang is going to feature quite heavily, which I’m very much up for! It’s interesting that Sabine was Ahsoka’s apprentice but I’m not quite sure what I think of that right now. The main issue I have is that she isn’t obviously force sensitive; but against that, she was trained by Kanan and Ezra and of course she is an excellent Mandalorian fighter in her own right. By the way, did you notice that when Sabine was fighting the dark Jedi apprentice (Shin Hati, I think) she was using Ezra’s green light saber: remember he gave it to her at the end of Season 4, just before giving himself up to Thrawn to save Lothal from his bombardment. That was quite a way to end the episode, with Sabine getting stabbed: although it was obvious she was not going to die so early on. It’s interesting that Sabine was not up to standard during that fight, which is, I suspect, something that will change as the show progresses. Your Ahsoka soft toy was a very appropriate companion during the episode 😁

Hi Mel, good to be back to see you and Ahsoka Bear for the premiere of her series, or shall we call it Rebels season 5! I had tears of delight in my eyes throughout this. You know how much Rebels has become my favourite Star Wars media, and to see those characters and Lothal itself (which looked great!) brought to life, brought joy to me. Hera took a bit of getting used to since its not Vanessa Marshall and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who I believe is married to Ewan McGregor these days, so perhaps we may see an Obi-Wan cameo!) as it went on, began to feel like the Hera we all love. Seeing Clancy Brown back as Ryder Azadi too was great, as was Jai Kel who was one of the cadets at the academy we followed in season 1 and 4 with Ezra. As mentioned, Lothal looked stunning, and it even gave me a warm feeling seeing that highway and Ezra's Tower, since we know them so well at this point. Seeing the Spectres back was great, though we've already seen Zeb now and with Kanan gone there is only one remaining - the star of the show, our beloved little war criminal murder droid!! They saved him for his own appearance in the second episode which we'll discuss tomorrow! :D I'm not quite buying Sabine being an apprentice to Ahsoka yet, though I trust Filoni on where he wants to take this. Her being trained as a Jedi of all things, has hit me for six. Also the issue of force sensitivity will need discussed too, but more on that in episode 2. The actress playing her sold me though that it was Sabine. She has the feistiness down well for the character, and I'm sure she'll bring out more of Sabine's traits as the series progresses. Morgan Elsbeth being a Nightsister is really great. It adds to her and Ahsoka's fight in Mandalorian now, when it was wondered at the time why someone of Ahsoka's calibre had some issue in defeating her. It makes sense now if she's from the Nightsister clan though. Baylan isn't a Sith, not for me anyway. This is a hint from Filoni of someone being a 'Dark Jedi' - though in canon that can't exist. What I think I'd prefer to call him is a fallen Jedi, a bit like Dooku before he got manipulated into becoming a Sith apprentice by Sidious. I think after Order 66, he like so many survivors, lost their way, but instead of finding the light once again inside them, fell to the dark. He is now a darksider who has a kind of warped apprentice (complete with Padawan braid too note), and is a reflection of Ahsoka; someone who also isn't a Jedi now, but a being of light. Baylan does want power, but it seems early on, he's not in on the religion and fanaticism that being a Sith entails. Solid start to the series, can't wait to see where this goes, as I managed to not see the trailer so am mostly in the dark on this! Exciting!

Saltire

Yeah Nick for the hover seeker droid, I think they even used the same sound effect from Phantom Menace when Maul was searching for Qui-Gon. Matthew Wood is the main sound effect guy these day and worked on Phantom Menace and has done pretty much all the Star Wars films and shows to this point including Ahsoka here, so I can definitely see him reusing that. He also voiced the battle droids in the animations and General Grievous both in EpIII and Clone Wars and Bib Fortuna in Mando, so is a talented fella. A lot moaned over the years of the lack of budget Rebels had in comparison with Clone Wars and the other animations (Resistance aside), but we finally have a big budget Rebels series and we are all here for that! One thing Favreau and Filoni do need to do, is put an exact handle on timelines for their works. We know everything is within a few years of each other, but it would be nice to have an exact ABY timeline, so it cuts out this vagueness where we have to guess at what times these stories take place in. We can speak about Sabine's force sensitivity in the episode 2 discussion, as though this has come out like a bolt from the blue, there were hints in the series with her also that I will go into then. Speaking of her fighting with Ezra's lightsabre, note she went into the stance that was taught to her by Ezra in the Trials Of The Darksabre episode - love that detail! They did well with the fight too, as we've seen she is a capable lightsabre wielder against regular foes, but against someone stronger in the force, she should fall, and does.

Nick

Hi Saltire, nice to hear from you 🙂 And yes I had meant to mention about Sabine’s stance at the start of the fight being the one you mention from Trial’s of the Darksabre but in the end forgot! My son spotted that when we watched it together, and I love this detail too. And like you I think it’s right (it makes sense) she lost that fight. Another aspect I liked was the relationship between Balan and Shin: they managed to create a really believable and likeable master and apprentice relationship vibe between the two of them, for example like that of Obi Wan and Qui Gon. I gather they are dark Jedi rather than Sith, although this is a new aspect of the Star Wars universe to me and I don’t know anything about dark Jedi at all.

Nick

I think Vanessa Marshal’s voice acting, and the animation in Rebels, created such a compelling and beloved character in Hera and that I’m now struggling a bit adapting to Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s version of Hera. It’s not that Mary Elizabeth is doing a bad job - I think she is doing a great job - it’s that the original animated version of Hera is so hard to displace in my head. I’m also STILL having problems getting used to Rosario Dawson’s live action Ahsoka, versus the animated version voiced by Ashley Eckstein for the same reason. Although, I think another factor making the transition difficult for me with this character is the way Ahsoka’s personality is portrayed in live action, although I could argue against my own thinking on this and think the portrayal appropriate for the Jedi master she now is. And yes I agree that knowing Morgan Elsbeth is a knight sister, or of knight sister heritage, helps make sense of the fight she had with Ahsoka in that Mandalorian episode. At the time it seemed a little incongruous that Ahsoka found the fight as difficult as she seemed to. That last point reminds me of the way Obi Wan was portrayed in the prequels: he often seemed to come across as not very strong during light sabre fights and the only time I can recall where we see Obi Wan fighting well was against Anakin during Revenge of the Sith. I never felt that this was consistent or right.

Manny

I definitely understand, especially with Hera and Ashoka. The original Rebels were there own characters. This is a follow up so I can only think of this, of course as an adaptation that modified the more serious side of Ahsoka, Sabine’s free spirit turned a bit more rebellious & Hera like you said really was beloved for a reason. Fantastic job all around though. I’m especially happy to see such familiar faces and places again.

Manny

I teared up every 5 minutes the first half of this episode. Just seeing everyone again & old drawings! It just brings back great memories from Rebels. I still remember the first episode and Ezra getting on the ship. From that to now it just gets my feelings going. Sabine, Hera and Ahsoka look amazing! They made the absolute right choice having Clancy Brown play Ryder! Mr Krabs /Shawshank Redemption! That’s so awesome 👏 He’s the embodiment of that character in both voice and look I love it! It’s cool having someone who worked on rebels here too! This was awesome. And I’m not gonna assume anything till next reaction. They could not have just ended it there. Ahsoka showed up so that cannot be the end for Sabine. I refuse to believe that. But hey this may be incentive to continue that training eh! 😏

Saltire

Hi Nick, good to see you still here too. I was going to wait till the start of the month to sign back up but what the heck, its Ahsoka and I'm too eager to see Mel's reactions and discussion about the series so far! There seems to be a lot of Knights Of The Old Republic nods Filoni is going for, as he knows how beloved those games were and some of the lore within them he's hinting at, like what he did when he brought the Malachor Temple and its story (along with hinting at The Presence being Darth Traya from the game). The Mandalorian wars with the Jedi were also mentioned in Rebels and that formed a big part of the story of those games too. I can't remember if Dark Jedi was in those as well, or thats from earlier Legends stories, and Lucas thought all that as nonsense, so Filoni won't bring them in, but he's using Order 66 as a way to see what became to some Jedi who didn't find themselves once more like Caleb and Obi-Wan. I can see myself liking both antagonists here though, Baylan looks interesting and I'd like to see what they do with Shin also.

Saltire

Yeah I think both characters have been modified slightly for the live stuff, with Hera being a bit more forthright and slightly more hardened, but Mary has shown several of Hera's traits so far that I'm beginning to get behind. For Ahsoka, in Rebels she is essentially a wise Jedi Master in all but name, and at the end we see her be Ahsoka The White, the all-knowing wise mentor. I think Filoni has stepped back on that slightly and we could see her journey back into the Jedi Order and becoming Ahsoka The White by the end of the series; hence why I think Rosario is playing her as she is. Its hinted that she still feels the guilt about Anakin and leaving him here, so perhaps her and Sabine will rediscover their purposes throughout the show; which I'm fine with. After all, to those who don't know her or her journey, seeing her be essentially Luke, wouldn't go down well with the casual fans.

Saltire

Also Ray Stevenson (RIP) who plays Baylan in this show, was also in Clone Wars (briefly) and Rebels playing Gar Saxon, so its great they brought him into the fold for the show before his unfortunate passing. I believe Sam Witwer too is credited, who played Maul, so perhaps we may see him too on screen.

Manny

Oh wow I didn’t know he was involved in Clone wars and Rebels too that’s so awesome. He does marvelous work, may he Rest In Peace. I’m glad we get to see more of him here. Oh wow I’m definitely down for Maul to come in! I’m a huge fan of Sam Witwer 😍

kamenriderhime

It really was, I agree!! Yeah they dropped that line SO fast, I was like dang haha. That's true, I'm starting to get that impression too, that they're not quite Sith either. Ok I'm so glad someone else noticed that the temple glyphs look REALLY similar to the mural from Rebels!!! Also I can't believe she's really a Night Sister, wow! Ohhh very interesting about the Celtic Trinity Knot as well, I wasn't aware! That's pretty amazing that Huyang has retained that much of his original parts, and it was awesome to see him for sure! I love that he's a regular supporting character too! Oh no kidding about Ryder, that's amazing that it's his VA playing him! Ohhhhh I LOVE that the Loth Cat is mostly a puppet!!! I'm so curious about Ahsoka and Sabine too! Aww thank you, I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction!!! I hope you love my next one too!!! I really appreciate it! Have a great one!!!

kamenriderhime

Awww that's so sad! Thanks for the recommendation, that sounds awesome Oh nice, I was wondering if it was Kevin Kiner! It really shows!!

kamenriderhime

Yay, thanks for taking the time to stop by! Hahah I mean, I guess I should have known they were gonna fake us out! Yeah the temple gave bigtime Night Sister vibes and kinda reminded me of the Lothal temple too. OMG yes the Indiana Jones vibes were so strong! Hahaha I mean that's the thing, like how on earth can you avoid Rebels spoilers, really! I know, it does say a lot that Sabine settled there! Ohhhhh cool, thanks for confirming that about the governor! I missed that! Oh yeah, you didn't miss anything, they had very little interaction on the show actually lol. That's a great way to put it about Ahsoka's line, and yes, I think she's addressing maybe more than just the Sabine situation there. Yeah Sabine was definitely not at the level to fight there. Hahahaha he was PROUD of what he did there, shoot! YAY, David Tenant! I think Baylan is new but I could be wrong! No rush on catching up, enjoy your weekend!!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Nick!!!! It's so great to hear from you again! I've been good, hope you have been as well! I hear you about animated series, and agree that they're doing pretty good with it so far here too! Thanks for pointing out so much of the details and things I missed, that's awesome about the uniforms and hover droid. I LOVE the music and agree that it helped it feel like a continuation of Rebels! The ending music was great too. Oh I did totally miss that about Ryder, sorry! I'd forgotten a bit of the details on characters who weren't in every ep by this point, sadly lol. So cool that it's Clancy Brown playing him! Lothal looked amazing!! And I agree, Hera and Sabine's actors did great, and Sabine's really has Sabine's character down. I think you're right about the timing and also the Night Sister costume/outfit style. I love that Huyang is gonna be a regular!!! I agree about Sabine, it isn't obvious to me either that she's really especially force sensitive, but she is Mandalorian and an excellent fighter, so I can see it somewhat. I guess time will tell on that story! I didn't pick it up at first but I love that the lightsaber is Ezra's!!! OMG the ending!!! I'm so glad you like Ahsoka Bear, she was a great companion for this premiere lol! Saltire, it's so good to see you here again!!!! You two have a lot to talk about, wow - I learned so much just reading through your conversations lol, that's crazy!!!!! Thank you both :D

kamenriderhime

I hear you on Hera here, I've heard that from others as well, and I totally get it! That voice is just so specific! And I totally get that it's difficult to adjust from one's concept of how the character should be portrayed based on previous versions, like with Ahsoka. Manny, you summed it up well!! Saltire, I agree that maybe they're going to explore these changes a bit more in the future too.

kamenriderhime

OMG I hear you, it was like the best reunion ever haha. The drawing!!! I know, remember those early days??? Sniff!!! They look great and omg, I agree about Clancy Brown, I'm sad that it went over my head at first! OMG wouldn't that be crazy if the death stuck, sheesh lol!!! Awww I didn't realize that either about Ray Stevenson, so sad!!! If Sam Witwer shows up, I'm about to hit the roof lol!

kamenriderhime

Hi Saltire!!!!! I cheered when the email came in from Patreon that you'd signed back up!!! Welcome back!!! I totally agree, it was hard not to tear up with joy at a sight like this. I'm with you that Rebels is right up there as some of my favorite Star Wars now. I totally get getting used to some aspects, but I also agree that I'm settling in even more with characters like Hera now too. And Lothal looked so good!!! I totally missed the Clancy Brown thing, I'm sorry! that's awesome though! Ohhhh I can't wait to discuss everyone's favorite murder droid! I hear you, Sabine being an apprentice is a lot to drop on us but I'll trust the process too. I love the addition of a Nightsister too! I recognize "Dark Jedi" from the books I'm reading (currently on book 2 of the Thrawn trilogy!) and I agree that these new characters aren't exactly Sith. I think that's a great way to sum it up actually, there's some similar elements there like wanting power, but he doesn't buy into the whole philosophy of the Sith. I agree, such a good start!!!! So cool that you held out so long on the trailers and watched this totally fresh!!!!

Saltire

Haha thats great, yeah its good to be back - I couldn't wait to the start of the month to see what you and the other regulars here are saying about the series so far! :D I think I need to start up the Thrawn books too, still haven't read the Kanan and Hera stuff yet either, but I'm changing things up by deciding to get fit again, so I can put them on as audiobooks when I work out. Will still take a while to get through, I remember doing the Harry Potter audiobooks years back and it took over a year to get through, but there's no rush. :) I did mention about Chopper being the remaining Spectre we haven't seen though, that is of course untrue as I've just remembered "there is another..." - Spectre 7, Jacen Syndulla! Wonder if we'll see him in episode 3!

Saltire

I wasn't all that into Huyang in Clone Wars I have to admit (even if I did love the Youngling arc), but I really like that he's here in the series as I think I might like his live interpretation more; and its interesting that Ahsoka is with him. He is one of the last things like her to be tied to the old Jedi Order and that way of life, and in a way I think he might be a help to her as well in reconnecting to them. I do think we may see her drop the baggage of all that happened to her in Clone Wars (and Rebels) and free herself from her guilt about leaving Anakin and Sabine, and possibly return to the Jedi fully once more. Thats been a theory of mine for a while and there has been hints in the first two episodes that she still carries that burden.

kamenriderhime

Aw I'm really glad!!! Thanks so much, I hope you enjoyed my first two reactions - I can't wait to see more!! The Thrawn books have been great so far! I hear you, I've been taking my sweet time on them too as I'm not a very fast reader! I'd be very curious to hear what you thought of them though! There's a lot in there that's interesting to see interpreted from the original trilogy before there was any knowledge of where George Lucas was really taking things for the prequels. Ohhhh that's so true, I hope we get to see Jacen!!!!!!! :D

Cody

These episodes were everything! David Tennant’s back!!! I’m so happy Huyang’s still around, he’s been great so far! Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is perfect as Hera so far, she sounds just like her! Morgan being a Nightsister is not what I expected at all but it’s interesting, I wonder if she’s an outsider that was accepted in or something cause she doesn’t look like Ventress’s race. Already loving Ray as Baylan, interested to see what they do with him and his apprentice. And we got the surprise of Ahsoka apparently training Sabine? Never would’ve seen that coming but I’m excited to see where it goes. And you’re not alone about the Loth Cat, I freaked out every time it was on screen, it’s so perfect and cute! It looks so silly with its little stick legs! X3

kamenriderhime

YAY David Tennant / Huyang!!! I really love Hera in this too, I know it can be hard to adjust but I honestly settled into her performance way easier than I thought I would! I'd heard a rumor about her being a Nightsister but I didn't know if they'd drop that confirmation on us so quickly. She definitely doesn't look like one, I guess I kinda assumed she was taking another form? But I'm not sure if that's a thing lol. Baylan is awesome so far, really curious to see more of him. I didn't see Ahsoka training Sabine coming either!!! Awwww haha I'm glad I'm not the only one who freaked over the Loth Cat!!!! OMG the little legs!!!! I'm dying!!! XD XD XD
