Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 1, episode 4 of Ahsoka!!!  OMG!!!!!!!!!  You guys, this ep was WILD!!!  I really didn't see it coming that Sabine would make the choice she did, and I'm really holding out hope that this doesn't lead to any more dark decisions...!!!  I loved the fight scenes and getting to see more of Baylan in action, plus more dialogue.  He's a cool character who doesn't fit the mold for your typical "bad guy" or Sith.  And seeing Hera spring into action was pretty sweet!!!  But wow, seeing Ahsoka fall like that and then not have a cool comeback....topped with Sabine handing over the map....it threw me a bit!!!  But guys, nothing, absolutely NOTHING, could have prepared me for that ending!!!!!!!!!!  I'm in tears just writing about it!!!  You guys, they're finally, FINALLY gonna get to talk..........!!!!!!!!!!!  I literally cannot wait for the next episode!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I’m not sure if I see that choice as particularly dark. She desperately wants to find Ezra and this was her chance. Also, she may have something planned that involved her being taken. Getting captured and figuring things out from there is a Rebels trademark after all. If she starts with the mustache twirling and develops an evil laugh then I will certainly agree she has gone to the dark side.

kamenriderhime

Yeah that's true, like I said, I really can't blame her. True, it wouldn't be the first time lol. That will be the sign for sure - after all, I hear that Vader's twirly mustache was the stuff of legend back in the day :P

Brian Settles

That's what happens when I comment based on the blurb before I watch haha. As for getting to Ezra/Thrawn, since the first episode I have felt that the end credits have strongly hinted that there will be more than one group making the trip. So I am sure there are other ways, maybe Ahsoka has just found one of them?

kamenriderhime

Lol no worries, I'm glad someone actually reads the blurbs!!! That's a good point actually, I think it's possible that Ahsoka's just found one of them but there are multiple ways to get there!

2023-09-07 17:28:55 This world is a lovely setting for this episode, with the red trees showing that once again Japanese inspired environment along with feel; then we have the cliff where the map is being calculated leading into a rough sea, indicative of changing times once more and where our characters are at mentally. Sabine is acting out of emotion and Ahsoka is looking at the big picture. She does want Ezra back, she made a promise to him in Rebels that she will find him too; but the cost of doing so, may be too high for whats to come with Thrawn and a fleet returning. I like the line Ahsoka says to her "can I count on you?" and shes says this in a weird way - which I'll come back to. I think you are right Mel about Baylan not underestimating Ahsoka in that opening few scenes. Another separation from him and the Sith. How many times did Maul underestimate Obi-Wan for example to his cost? Huyang fist-fighting an HK droid was awesome. I love after the fight as well that he takes a bit of time to get up, its a nice detail to show he's not a spring chicken! Jacen asking Hera "why do I have to do as I'm told and you don't?", and you can hear Chopper reply "yeah, what's up with that?" - Chopper you know very well why YOU need to be kept in line! :D I love that Carson is with Hera going off on their own against orders. We saw in Mando he was disillusioned by the red tape the New Republic seemed to be stuck in and so went off himself to get support by getting Din and investigating what happened to Gideon. He's going to have Hera's back. He's become a bit of a legend that fella, give us a series with him and Zeb patrolling the galaxy righting wrongs! The fight choreography was excellent this episode, all these different stances which felt so much like watching a kurosawa samurai film, than Star Wars. We've had fights choreographed similarly in SW before, but not to this level; its been more about speed and how cool it looks in the past, particularly with the prequel fights. I prefer this I have to admit. It was a cool moment with the spinning lightsabres where Ahsoka just struck through the damn thing to show they really aren't all that for someone of her level. And I love that after all the theories about who Marrok was, they literally all went up in a puff of green smoke! It looked like he was an exhumed Inquisitor held together using Nightsister magic, which is so much cooler than him being Starkiller (ridiculously), Ezra or Cal Kestis. Also again his smoke leaving him violently (a bit like the Witch King in Lord Of The Rings too) was also like the blood splattering out in a samurai movie. Lovely details they are sprinkling in here, but thats to be expected when its Filoni. Baylan mentions 'how inevitable' when Ahsoka ignites her sabre. She won't be reasoned with in his eyes and she is Anakin's apprentice so will always coming in fighting. He thinks she is being misguided by not seeing it his way, but Ahsoka will always seek to prevent a war before it starts. Both have been here before. I note that he holds his lightsabre like a claymore sword, which matches someone of Ray's size. He also don's medieval looking armour (as did Marrok and Shin) literally showing him to be some sort of "Knight". His brute power going up against Ahsoka's athleticism and speed. She doesn't ignite her smaller shoto sabre. She's going to need two hands to deflect his blows and also has a hand free to try to get the map. Again showing how well these duels were worked out. Back at Sabine's duel, she almost gives Shin a type of force slap, but Shin isn't impressed. So she catches her off-guard instead by switching to her hand rockets. Nice! Yes Ahsoka grabs the map but is burned by the spell thats on it, it may even be more than that too as she is almost completely disabled, giving Baylan the upper hand. Finding out Sabine's family of Tristan, her father and mother all got killed in the Mandalorian Purge, is new; and helped split her off from Ahsoka. We'll need to get more on this I feel, but it doubles down on her decision to not destroy the map. Going back to Ahsoka's line "can I count on you?" earlier, she said it in a way that suggested she had read Sabine's mind, as that's what Ezra asked her in the Rebels finale "I know I can count on you". Ezra got there first and she was always going to choose Ezra over her master in this situation. She is put in a difficult place and she makes her choice. You are still thinking Baylan is a Sith and being manipulative Mel I feel. Yes he is trying to get her on his side so that the map stays in tact; but he feels true to his word, something a Sith will never be. The Ghost, oh The Ghost! Its become such an iconic ship too, god I love it, and that glorious sound it makes when it re-enters normal space from hyperspace. One of the best sounds in Star Wars. That ending though.... The transition was great between the ocean and seeing Ahsoka back in the World Between Worlds. Some have suggested this is in her imagination. I don't think it is, I think she's really there. Perhaps Morai (The Daughter) brought her there? Anakin says "I didn't expect to see you so soon" - to me indicating she is in purgatory, perhaps balancing between life and death, and The Daughter coming to her aid again. Or you could be right Mel, it might be Force Ghost Anakin saving her; I believe he did so with Luke in one of the recent books. As you all know by now, I've never been a huge Anakin fan, but what always affected me with him was what happened to others close to him. And I have to admit, I reacted similarly on seeing him. Obi-Wan was filming around the same time, so its cool they got Hayden in for what looks like an entire episode next week, so that we can have Ahsoka and Anakin talk once again; which perhaps will bring closure for her and all that has happened to her, so that she may move on and become Ahsoka The White. Episode 5 is directed by Filoni next week and is getting a limited cinema release, so something BIG is about to happen! I can't wait, what an episode this was, everything about it was perfect, and its kicking into high gear now! :D

Oh and one more thing, I always forget to mention it but the way you say Ahsoka makes me think of the old Zima commercials. Seems like money sitting on the table, is Zima still a thing? If they are they should jump on a tie-in of some sort.

Before I get to my thoughts, I should say I finally got caught up and finished Clone Wars this week. Appropriate timing, isn’t it? 😃 “Sabine… can I count on you?” That question at the start of the episode certainly has far fledged resonance considering everything that followed, didn’t it? When Hera leaves Home One, she says “watch him” to Jacen and Chopper. Now the real question is… which one of them was she talking to about the other? Either one would fit. 🙃 Also… I’m pretty sure I see Chopper in the live action StarvWars intro as the last droid. The conversation between Hera and Sabine in their ship while Huyang is working is just dripping with double meanings. They’re both saying one thing but we can tell they mean the exact opposite. “Should I be worried about you?” “…No.” The reason Ahsoka ran outside when the guards initially attacked the ship is she knew Huyang wouldn’t make an error in judgment when repairing that critical, there wasn’t any Force sense involved. Ahsoka telling Sabine to bury her feelings about Ezra - I get what she’s trying to say, but it’s kind of rich, considering we know she did her fair share of individual calls in her youth. She’s speaking from experience… but she might have a little too much of Anakin’s influence in her own personality to be able to tell someone else that. The lightsaber choreography was pretty neat in this episode. Yes, that is an Inquisitor lightsaber Marak was using… and by the way… when Ahsoka struck then, the suit puffed into smoke? You know, considering I just wrapped up in Clone Wars I kind of wondered if it could possibly be Maul. But now the smoke has me thinking… could it be another surviving Nightsister? Given who’s leading this operation…. The lightsaber duel between Ahsoka and Baylan is interesting because you pointed out, they don’t seem to be Sith. A Sith would attack quickly and recklessly, from the outset. Baylan waited for Ahsoka to attack first. Gotta love Sabine’s “I’m using the force… of my blaster!” psych out on Shin. Also the fact that Shin already got the better of her once added a little more tension to the rematch. Sabine ‘s desire to reunite with Ezra is not unlike Anakin’s desire to save Padme. The circumstances are different, but they’re being faced with a choice that’s very hard to turn down. In fact, the entire franchise has been built on the importance of personal relationships versus what the “greater good” is, they LOVE that trope. Except in this case, Baylan is making promises that actually have some base behind them, unlike Palpatine’s boasting like a Dark Side used car salesman. The hyperspace ring is too fast for anyone to catch, it completely wiped at least half of the X-Wings Hera brought just by activating. Actually I kinda always wondered about the physics about that. I remember the world between worlds from Rebels and it’s functions, but more importantly… how did we get here? Is Ahsoka “dead” for the moment? She wasn’t seen when the camera panned over the edge. I did catch Anakin’s calling her “Snips” though… I had a feeling you’d get emotionally blindsided from that little surprise. Seems like Dave knows how to cater to his audience, doesn’t he? But I wonder what will happen next, and why are we where we are? And what of Sabine’s fate on the Eye of Sion? To quote Sarge: “Dagnab it, I hate CLIFF hangers!” 😁

Manny

I’m crying! Is it okay to cry!? They were playing the Vader music but seeing Anakin again like that just activated my waterworks. 😭

kamenriderhime

Ohhhh I'm glad I reminded you of those, I haven't thought of them in forever!! Yeah there's a real marketing opportunity there huh lol.

kamenriderhime

OMG YES IT'S ALWAYS OK TO CRY!!!! Especially in times like this!!! I don't know what the music was about but I'm pretty sure this is the real deal!!! It got me going too, seeing them together again, omg XD

kamenriderhime

WHOA!!! That's great timing! How did you like it? Oh yeah, that "can I count on you" was really the whole theme of the ep....!! HAHAHAH for real, like whos' watching who exactly in the Jacen/Chopper scenario? Oh yeah, you can tell a lot from that conversation between Sabine and Ahsoka. Oh gotcha about the force sense, my bad. I know, we know that Ahsoka has struggled with that conflict between personal and bigger picture too, so it is a bit ironic to hear her say that....on the other hand, she's seen firsthand what happens when someone gives in to their passions too much. The choreography was nuts right!!! Oh, I guess the going theory is that the knight was Nightsister magic. But yeah, I heard theories that it was Maul, Ezra, or another character who I'm not as familiar with but I think is from the games or books or something. Guess it was none of those? :P Yeah that's the thing about their fight, and all of Baylan's dialogue up to this point really - it just doesn't seem Sith. Hahahaha force...of my blaster :P It was a great fakeout! That's the thing, it's not like we haven't made decisions based on personal relationships before in this franchise, and it's not always a bad thing. Good point that Baylan can actually back up what he says too, unlike Palpatine and his pie in the sky evil bs lol. That's a good point, how did Ahsoka get there??? Snips!!!! My heart exploded!!!! Dave knows just what we like! Hahahaha Sarge really said it in this case, it's way too apropos here isn't it haha!!!

kamenriderhime

It's is so visually beautiful isn't it! That really sums up where the two of them are at here, and that "can I count on you" is significant for sure. I'm glad you agree about Baylan not underestimating Ahsoka! So true, it never worked out for Maul did it. I love the Huyang fight! He's still got it - never lost it! Hahahaha Chopper chiming in at that moment was so rich!!! Like if he doesn't know he's a little maniac by now, then that's on him! I love Carson joining in and that's so true that it fits with where we last saw him. OMG I'd love to see him and Zeb on adventures! I couldn't agree more about the fights!!! I think there's something about the deliberate movements that really shows off their skills. I do find Baylan's interpretation of the Jedi and their actions really interesting. Those are some really interesting and detailed observations on the details of the fight too, wow! I love Sabine's fakeout too! Our girl knows how to think on her feet! Oh it was the spell that burned Ahsoka, got it. I know, finding out about her family was so sad!!! That's such a good point about the contrast between Ahsoka's line here and Ezra's line to Sabine. It makes total sense she'd choose Ezra. That's a good point actually about Baylan - he really does seem like he intends on staying true to his word and backing up his claims. He's being manipulative, but there's a sort of genuine honesty behind it too. The Ghost!!!!! OMG I did not notice the picture, I would have collapsed as a human being and cried the rest of the ep hahaha. OMG the ending!!! That's a good point, it might have very well been the Daughter that brought her there. No kidding that Force Ghost Anakin showed up to save Luke in a book!!! I kinda hope I'm right about that. I hear you about your feelings on Anakin, I totally get that, but I'm also happy to hear you enjoyed his return here!!! Hayden was awesome to come back for this, and from everything I hear from him in interviews and whatnot, I just love his dedication to this role and willingness to come back for it. WHOA, ep 5 is getting a cinema release?!!?!? That's crazy!!!! Some stuff is going down for sure then!!! Dang!!! Can't wait!!!

Tyler Stobbe

I think you know the answer to that, it was a pretty well put together series and did far more to develop characters in the prequels because it had the luxury of more runtime. There was a lot more to explore. Before I forget, I meant to say this earlier but… was Ahsoka force choking Shin when she thought Sabine was dead? Speaking of Anakin’s influences… 👀

Saltire

Yeah I didn't see Kanan's picture either during my watch, I saw someone had spotted it elsewhere. It's even Freddie Prinze as well which is awesome! I wonder if Mary Elizabeth Winstead has a photo of Obi-Wan under Hera's seat too, since she is married on Ewan McGregor. Tbf we should all have a pic of Obi-Wan someplace, shouldn't we! :D I wonder if there will be some flashbacks in the next episode and we might see him too! Many have been asking for Rex in this series also, maybe, just maybe!! Fingers crossed! Such a shame that Ray Stevenson never got to see the tremendous response across the fanbase for him as Baylan here; you can't take your eyes off him anytime he's on screen, and he was apparently really excited to see the reaction. :( I almost find myself agreeing with Baylan when he says to Ahsoka "It didn't have to be like this!!". Fascinating character so far. Yeah the book which Anakin saves Luke sounds a strange one; Luke teams up with Lando of all people and he stumbles across Exegol from Rise Of Skywalker, where Sidious is plotting his return. I don't know what happens, but yes apparently Anakin saves the day and brings Luke back from the brink. I don't know how Luke then didn't report about Sidious and Exegol, perhaps there was some amnesia involved, but I wouldn't mind it if they made it a thing that Anakin tries to right some of his wrongs now he's "more powerful than you could possibly imagine"; and I would like it to be the case with Ahsoka here, like how he saved her multiple times in Clone Wars. Its good to see the excitement Hayden has for coming back; with the reception he got in the main for the prequels, he would have been well within his rights to say to everyone "stuff it", and who knows, perhaps this could be the start of something else for him here back in Star Wars. Its great too for the character of Ahsoka for the casual fans, as seeing her with Anakin, even though she has said she was his apprentice, just adds extra weight for many to see how big a deal she has become for many, and why she deserves her own series. I loved Rosario's reaction too; throughout all this, she has been mainly stony-faced, but she lit up fully seeing her master and big brother back. Damnit, my eyes are watering again writing that! :D

kamenriderhime

It's so easy to miss things like that on a first watch! Isn't that wild that they're married in real life?? Oh, I'd die if Rex shows up!!!! Here's hoping!! It's so sad about Ray Stevenson! He's really doing an amazing performance here. It's so layered and he really does steal the scene for every scene he's in. Whoa, that's quite a plot for the book!!! I think it would be fitting and sweet if it was Anakin who saved her here. I know, it makes me cringe that there was such a negative reaction to Hayden for so long, but he certainly has been a great sport about it all hasn't he! So true about Rosario too - when she needs to go beyond the stoic attitude, she really does and pulls it off so well!!! OMG, I cried while editing it too :P

kamenriderhime

I can guess, yeah :P And so true, they really had time to develop everything. Ohhhh I'm not sure, was she??? I didn't catch that!

Cody

This episode was so good! I never noticed before just how big Baylan’s lightsaber is, the hilt is huge! Makes sense for a big guy like him and it makes him look even more imposing. Really curious what the deal with Marrok was cause it looked like Nightsister magic. And OMG THAT ENDING, I’M SO EXCITED FOR TOMORROW! THATS OUR MAN! ;__;

kamenriderhime

It really was!! Oh yeah good call about the lightsaber too! It's intimidating for sure. Yeah Marrok's got some connection with the Nightsisters for sure. OMG YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our guy is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'D
