Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 1, episode 6 of Ahsoka!!!  OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You guys, we get two major appearances in this one that I've been dying for since the start of the series!!!  Thrawn is PERFECT, the presence totally translates from animated to live action so well.  I'm still in awe, intrigued, and scared every time he's on screen - just what you'd expect from Thrawn!  And Ezra, omg!!!!!  Like DANG you guys, they aren't missing a beat with translating these characters from Rebels to live action at ALL!!!  His demeanor, performance, look, and voice (is that his VA's voice??) are all just so spot on.  The reunion was epic!  And omg the creatures in this one sent me through the roof, they were so fun and cute haha.  We've done the self-battle journey, now it's time for the big battle!  It's gonna be epic!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Not seen your reaction yet Mel, but its not Taylor Gray, Ezra's VA in Rebels, though Eman Esfandi has got the cadence and seeming charm and goofiness of Ezra down to a tee. He also looks so like Ezra's father Ephram, its uncanny. https://i.pinimg.com/1200x/a0/af/d5/a0afd51f4ab2a4d7b2c573836d49dccb.jpg Great casting. We didn't get sexy Kallus in this series yet, so they gave us sexy Ezra! :P

It's always tricky adapting animation into live action with regards to casting. I've always felt that the most important thing is to nail the tone and idiosyncrasies of the characters. If the accent isn't spot on that's fine as long as the spirit is there. But with Thrawn it's such a huge deal that there was no other choice. A fun bit of casting here: Wes Chatham plays Enoch, the captain of the guard for Thrawn. He's the one with the cool mask. He also has a major role in the expanse which is much more hard science fiction than Stars Wars which leans heavily into fantasy. If you are into harder science fiction I would highly recommend it.

Love the shot at the start with the Purgil's version of hyperspace with all the light beams circling them. It looks like a shot from Rebels itself, which makes me happy! :D I like Huyang sticking up for Sabine in the opening scene. When she's there, he'll happily diss her, but when she's not there to defend herself, he backs that she made the right choice for her. Its a selfish choice and not a Jedi one and could endanger everybody if war comes; but its a choice she was always going to make as Ezra is family. Huyang uttering the famous line "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" kind of hints at even in their universe, that line spoke of old stories, fables and fantasy. As we have spoken about before and I'm sure you know Mel, the original draft for Star Wars was going to be told through the Journal Of The Whills, who were kind of like historians who relayed the events we see in all the media, as tales out of the Journals. And in fact originally, R2-D2 was to be a Keeper Of The Whills who helped tell us the story of the original trilogy from his point of view. Nice echo back to all that. Something new for us about the Dathomiri coming from Peridea, outside of the galaxy; i'm not right up on all the legends stuff so don't know if Peridea or the Dathomiri witches hailing from elsewhere other than Dathomir, has been mentioned before. It makes a bit more sense though as the men on Dathomir are Zabraks who hail from Iridonia originally and perhaps settled on Dathomir before the witches came there. Morgan mentions they used to harness the Star-Whales, whilst in Legends it was rancors they used to use as mounts - so they have upgraded! All cool stuff. The Dathomir witch mothers are terrifying, and they used the witch voice that Mother Talzin had, which is amazing! I can't believe I didn't recognise that the Great Mother is Claudia Black though, who is a sci-fi legend of her own, appearing in Farscape and Stargate back in the day. I don't think cuffs would suffice to hold a Jedi if they wanted to escape, so I can see why the witches put these red ball laser things to hold her further in case she used the force to get out. I wonder if anyone can use the force here since we aren't in the Star Wars galaxy, though if the Nightsisters can use their magick here which is a form of the force, then perhaps so. What Baylan now seeks is very intruiging and if anything sounds more dangerous than the return of Thrawn. That scene where he speaks about the rise and fall of things throughout the aeons, is true and it would be great to put a stop to it all; however I'm unsure that what he seeks will bring around any comfort to the masses. We can see his relationship with Shin is akin to a Jedi Master and Padawan, just in a different way, though the way they act is very different from what Kanan and Ezra had for example. You say "that's a terrible noise" - yes it is, and something terrible is arriving... Thrawn! We've seen many variants of stormtroopers over the years, but these are absolutely terrifying, and the Captain of them, Enoch is the stuff of nightmare, with his gold Greek mask welded into his helmet. The troopers have had to live rough this last decade, hence the red wrappings and gold holding their armour together. In that time they have upped their devotion to their god, Thrawn who is ready to become Heir To The Empire! Goosebumps all round with that scene, what an introduction to our magnificent antagonist. Love Thrawns live look. I was never on board really with Lars Mikkelsen resuming the role from Rebels, even though he is a live actor like his brother Mads (who you probably have seen in many things including Hannibal and here in Star Wars as Galen Erso in Rogue One); but he did impress me in this episode. He brought the threat right from the off. We can see his imperial uniform is a bit worn and that he is older of course; but that doesn't make him less threatening at all. They kept elements of his high cheekbones from his Rebels look, and around his eyes it makes him appear otherworldly, like some blue demon rising from the dead; which is what his colleagues and enemies all thought him to be. Looking into those red eyes, we can still see the fire and determination is there and that the galaxy will know his name on his return, especially if he has been teaming up with Nightsisters. He was defeated in Rebels twice by the force, the first with Bendu, and the second with Ezra taking him all the way here. He won't make that mistake a third time, with having Nightsisters as his allies. Filoni had to find a way of bringing in some sort of wolf didn't he! :D He seems a good boy though, even if he is a coward! The turtle-crab things are adorable, though you could see our doggie friend has dinner on his mind! The one turtle guy Sabine finds, happens to have a rebel alliance logo on his neck! The force does work in mysterious ways I guess! :P Again Baylan speaking about finding some other power that even the Nightsisters are afraid of. When I first knew that they were going to another galaxy to find Thrawn, it stirred something that I remember from Legends about another enemy from there that makes its way to the Star Wars galaxy and causes utter devastation, even moreso than the Empire. I don't know if Filoni will do this, but he has opened the door for it if he wants to go down that storyline. And then we find Ezra! The hug complete with Ezra's Theme was too much! I know Ezra can be hit or miss with some in the fanbase, but I've always liked that fun goofy Jedi, he has a heart of gold and will be a great ally for us in the battle to come. The Thrawntroopers (I actually believe they are called Night Troopers) loading caskets into the Chimaera has to be dead Nightsisters. Are they going to resurrect them like in Clone Wars? That would be awesome and terrifying if they did! Another great episode. Honestly this series has been getting better and better as it has gained momentum, and I can't wait to see what they have planned in the final two episodes!

I love my sci-fi but couldn't get into the Expanse. Saw four episodes and it was fine, but it didn't hook me. Heard so much about it though, so perhaps I should give it another go.

Brian Settles

Yeah I wouldn't say it's for everyone. But if you are thinking of giving it another go I would say that it gets better. Mostly because they start nailing the tone more and figuring out the pacing and technical stuff. Pretty typical stuff with season one of a show.

Brandon Dodge

I loved this episode. We finally found Ezra! He's not played by Taylor Gray, although Eman Esfandi did a spectacular job getting his mannerisms and even his cadence right for Ezra. It was great to see Thrawn again and even to see Lars Mickkelson return to play him in live action. He seems a bit disheveled. Baylan is kinda interesting here. He wants Shin to be something more. He knows of the cycle between the Jedi and the Sith, the nearly endless back and forth, and he's tired, he wants to put an end to this cycle. He probably wants to destroy everything they stood for to create something new, or maybe there's something else he can do here. He kinda reminds me of Kreia from Knights of The Old Republic 2 in some ways. I'm so curious what he'll do next. And it's nice to see Shin questioning things. Some interesting theories about these Troopers. So in the Subtitles they're called Night Troopers, like the Nightsisters. And their Captain is named Enoch, I think there's a reason for that. Enoch was a Biblical Figure in the Book of Genesis and he lived 365 years before he was taken alive into heaven by God himself. He essentially transcended death. I feel like Thrawn and the Nightsisters here have done something similar with the Troopers. They probably used Nightsister Magick to bring back to life all the dead Stormtroopers and keep them alive with their Magick, transforming them into Night Troopers. You even see different metals in between the cracks in the armor which is likely in reference to the Japanese Kinsagi. The 3 Night Sisters that we see seem to be a trio of Great Mothers, as Morgan calls them, similar to Mother Talzin. Their names in the credits are Lakesis, Aktropow, and Klothow. This is likely in reference to the Sisters of Fate from Greek Mythology; Lahkesis, Atropo, and Clotho. They weaved the threads of time with the Loom of Fate controlling everything that happened. And we kinda get references to that with their mentions of fate and Sabine being a loose thread, something they couldn't forsee or predict, which I thought was pretty cool. So we found Ezra, but now we must ask ourselves, how are we gonna get out of here? And even if we can, then what?

I find it rather interesting, that, despite the name of this series, in this episode, she does not appear after the opening title. Which kind of goes to show you just how much Dave is able to do with his secondary and tertiary characters as well. Although, I wouldn’t call Sabine a secondary… Okay, speaking of irony, I believe Huyang’s point about Sabine was that we take tremendous risks for people we care about. If we didn’t, we’d all be cold and stoic like certain characters who popped up this week. If everybody just did the thing that made sense… then what reason would Luke have had to try and save his father? It’s because of those actions Ahsoka got closure in a roundabout way. While we’re on that subject, was that a shot when Huyang was talking about his history of the galaxy stories and Ahsoka saying “the first part was the best?” I mean if it’s trilogies, I think we can all agree the original isn’t ever outdone by the others. Regarding your interpretation of Baylan and Thrawn - they’re very matter-of-fact characters. They say what they mean, and do what they say. However, you also have to decipher the part they’re NOT telling you and what the catch is. The Night Soldiers (Thrawn’s troopers) were chanting his name. Lars Mikkelsen is indeed the original VA for Thrawn and they had him do the real life role. I think this is a good thing, because no voice adjustments have to be made, but it’s also rather impressive how he’s able to match the mannerisms of the animated character. As far as your hang up earlier on how to describe him, I’ll go ahead and say the description to use is INTENSE. Speaking of other characters, the Great Mothers did not foresee Sabine tagging along, and this “loose thread” may end up causing a unforeseen ripple effect in their future. Also Morgan said they w oils need three rotations to load the ship. So that’s our timeline. What are they loading, and why? When Thrawn talks to Baylan, Baylan says “I left the Jedi a long time ago,” and Thrawn replies, “you would not be the first.” That could’ve been a reference to Dooku and Vader. The beast Sabine is riding is called a Howler, and it’s name is Tota. The turtle creatures are called Noti, according to the subtitles. The nomads that attacked her were also Noti, gotta love the way she scared the last one off by breaking its stick. All this talk of Nomads makes me wonder when Skout will show up… Baylan said he seeks the beginning, not the end. He’s right about the Jedi, though - at it’s heart, it was a good idea. The problem was they got too mired up in what they needed to do by the letter of the law and stopped caring about the people they were meant to serve. It’s that same apathy that banished Ahsoka. More irony. As far as what he’s after it occurred to me… is he trying to undo everything as it happened a la Star Trek JJ Abrams little “rewind”? If you could undo the Clone Wars from ever happening in the first place…? This is probably a crack pot theory but it’s got my wheels turning. The voice actor for Ezra is not the same as the actor playing him here, they’re different. Of course, he’s a lot more grown up. Remember both have been gone for some time, even Thrawn doesn’t know the Empire doesn’t exist anymore. So what’s there to go back to? Sabine’s right… just let her be happy she found him for now, I imagine more stuff is coming - especially since Ashoka’s hope if sneaking up on the planet of Peridea has now been thwarted. If there’s only two episodes left there’s going to have to be a lot to cover. Dave’s probably just on his office laughing at us each time the next episode drops at this point. I would. XD

Manny

So much I want to talk about but I really just want to talk about the portrayals, they are so perfect. The presence, the demeanor or mannerisms in both Thrawn and Ezra. They just nailed it. I’m so happy I don’t even care that Thrawn’s scary self is here, they nailed it to the hilt not for me to gush over! :DDD

kamenriderhime

Oh wow!! That's really uncanny for sure, he's got it down alright! And yeah, the casting was awesome, he definitely looks like his dad. Hahaha there you go, a little compromise for the audience :P

kamenriderhime

Absolutely, I think the mannerisms are key, but I love that they just sprung for the OG actor for Thrawn here, it really makes a difference! No kidding about Expanse, I've heard a lot about it! I think it's even been in a poll once or twice! Thanks for the heads up!

kamenriderhime

I know, they nailed it for sure! Seriously, like this is so bad for our crew but Thrawn is just so enjoyable that I can't help but have a good time haha!!! I'm right there with ya!!!

Saltire

Yes I think I will try The Expanse again. If you ever react to it too Mel sometime, I'd be up to see what you think of it too.

Saltire

Yes I can also see the similarities with Baylan and Kreia. It was always fascinating listening to her speak about the force and the nature of being a Jedi and that she also tried to become something more, but in the end fell harder than Baylan by becoming Darth Traya. I wonder if Filoni has been replaying that game since Sion has been also mentioned in this very series too and he was another Sith Lord there. Whether you agree with the thoughts in those games and what Filoni is asking here about what Baylan thinks of the Jedi/Sith cycles or Republic/Empire cycles; it adds to the mystery and heart of what the force should be for everyone and even whether the Jedi way is the correct approach. He never answers those questions either, and leaves it up to us to dwell on the ambiguity of it all. I think Baylan will find what he's looking for and realise how wrong he was in the end, but it will be then interesting to see if Shin follows him down that path, or whether she'll separate from him and realise her own destiny whatever that may be. I'm sure we'll get some answers on that by the series conclusion. The stormtroopers will be interesting too, as Thrawn himself has said here, their numbers have dwindled significantly, so he and the Nightsister Mothers could indeed have resurrected them, which may have been hinted at by Marrok sublimating into smoke. There is definitely something else going on with how devoted they seem to Thrawn by chanting his name and chanting what seems like spells/hexes or something else. Baylan has also hinted at this going on throughout when he keeps muttering "witchcraft". If Enoch in the bible did transcend death and is the stormtrooper Captain here, that more than likely seems probable that they have been exhumed and resurrected - and would be kind of awesome to see when they get back to the galaxy, like the army of the dead in LOTR.

kamenriderhime

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! I feel like I saw the first ep a long time ago but can't really remember much about it.

kamenriderhime

It did look like a shot from Rebels didn't it! I agree, it was great to see Huyang defend Sabine! It's sweet that even though he's a straight shooter, he has her back. And yes, it might not have been the most logical/Jedi decision or whatnot, but considering what's at stake for her and where she's coming from, it really was the only choice. Yes, I remember you mentioning the Journal of the Whills! I love that they nodded to the idea of fables and such within the universe. I was wondering if that had ever been mentioned about Peridea! That's interesting that it's new info, and that we've also upgraded from Rancors to Star Whales! Oh was that Talzin's voice?! Also so cool about Claudia Black! They did such a great job with the Night Sisters here. Good point about the cuffs, I hadn't thought of that. I can totally see how Baylan's relationship with Shin is more Jedi/Padawan than Sith/apprentice. And I agree, whatever he has in mind is something big, even bigger than Thrawn's return. A terrible noise for a terrible occurrence! :P The intro scene was amazing and I agree that the stormtroopers are so creepy! The gold masked trooper felt like something out of Doctor Who to me. In fact, the whole thing felt very Cyberman-ish! I agree that they did an awesome job with Lars Mikkelsen's whole look here, and he definitely has the right presence. That's the thing about Thrawn, he's already been taken down twice but he is so cunning and that will not work on him again. Hahahah Filoni and his wolves though!!! He definitely seems like a good dog! He does seem to want to make our cute little turtle friends into snacks though, but I guess he can't be blamed for that lol. And they are so cute! I know, what are the odds that one would have the logo around his neck?! The Force really does work in mysterious ways hehe. That's a good point about what Baylan was referring to, I wonder if that's a road they'll go down! Guess we'll find out. Ohhhh the Ezra moment was just too good, it definitely made me feel warm and happy inside too! Oh is that what those were, dead Night Sisters??? So creepy! I agree, this series has gotten better with each ep! Can't wait to see the last two!

kamenriderhime

That's amazing that it's not Ezra's original VA, I couldn't even tell! He's for sure doing a great job. I'm glad about Lars Mikkelsen too! I also think Baylan has plans for ending what he sees as an endless vicious cycle, which is interesting. Night Troopers makes sense in conjunction with Night Sisters. Whoa, that's really interesting about the name Enoch and its possible meaning! It would make total sense if they were resurrected with magic from the Night Sisters, and that's a good call about the reference to Kinsagi too. That's so interesting about the ties to mythology too! It is interesting to think that Sabine threw a wrench in the works for the ability to predict. Yeah I have no idea where we go from here now that we've found Ezra!!! Guess we'll find out!

kamenriderhime

Saltire - it'll be really interesting to see where Baylan's story goes! Also great point about the similarities to the army of the dead in the LOTR!!

kamenriderhime

That's the thing, the fact that secondary characters command this much presence is pretty impressive and speaks a lot to how well done this show is! You're so right, there's some irony there about people making decisions to help people close to them, isn't there? Hahaha omg did they break the fourth wall there? That's hilarious! That's true, there's a lot in what characters like that leave unsaid too. Ohhhh thanks for clearing that up about the chanting. Yeah intense is a good word to describe him! Thanks for explaining about the creatures! Hahahahaha omg there's a crossover! That's so true, the concept of the Jedi was good that got mired down with a lot of bad. And Ahsoka knows that better than anyone. Ohhhh that's actually really interesting, I hadn't even thought about the possible connection to the JJ Abrams Star Trek plot lol. That's crazy about Ezra's actor, he's doing such a great job! Yeah, just enjoy the moment for sure! LOL Dave's gotta be laughing it up for sure! Can't wait for the next two!

Cody

We got so much this episode! The revelation that the Nightsisters are originally from a different galaxy, the ring of the planet being a Purrgil GRAVEYARD (metal af), some more crumbs of what Baylan’s goal is, THRAWN AND EZRA!

kamenriderhime

I know right?! Lots of info! And totally metal about the graveyard haha. I'm curious about Baylan's goals too. OMG THRAWN AND EZRA!!!!!! What a treat on both counts!!!!!!!!

Saltire

Yes I can definitely see Doctor Who and the Cybermen in the design of Enoch's mask and even the way he seems to talk suggest something is off about him! Lets see where he goes. It would be great to have a worthy stormtrooper adversary that hangs about for a bit, like what we all thought Captain Phasma was going to be in the sequels with her cool design, until she got binned off fairly quick from Finn. I hope its an army of dead Nightsisters coming along with Thrawn. The devastation he could cause with them once he comes back will be harrowing, yet kind of awesome to behold too! Looking forward to episode 7, and in fact may stay up late late tonight to watch it!! Need to see what they next have in store! See you Thursday!

kamenriderhime

Oh cool, I'm glad I'm not the only one who got those vibes! I can't wait to see what they do with it. That would be really cool to have a Captain Phasma level character! We'll see I guess. Ooooh that would be so creepy and so amazing if it was an army of dead Nightsisters! As of now the ep is already out and I'm just about to watch it!!! Can't wait!!!

Marta Kira Ayanami

HIme, maybe try reading Thrawn novels someday, they're great! :D aaand it's not just that I want you to meet Eli Vanto, Ar'alani and Vah'nya (I can never write her name properly). Not just that. There's other fun stuff there, too. :D
