Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 1, episode 2 of Chainsaw Man!  Oh nice, we're getting lots more worldbuilding in this one!  We learn about Fiends, meet one named Power, learn how Denji isn't quite a fiend, etc.  And we also establish Denji's, erm, goal/motivation for the series apparently!  :P  I'm really curious to see how they're laying this all out and why exactly Denji is different, although I have a few ideas already (i.e. the power of friendship).  It's also nice to see Denji not being, you know, starving and destitute!  Apparently he's even been adopted as a pet.....!!!  But he's on thin ice too, along with the rest of the experimental crew.  Should be interesting!  Can't wait for more!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) The famous door that Denji tries to open will not be explained this season, but it is a very important element. Pochita, that's what I said you would want to have, I know you like dogs and Pochita is adorable, so a future Pochita plush toy is surely to be expected next to Bond behind you lol. You probably see some resemblance with Parasyte, because I think one of the inspirations, like Parasyte, is Devilman. If you don't know Devilman, it's the story of Akira who will find himself with the body of a demon but guarding his human heart, while other demons will take possession of humans while really being demons. Like Denji remains human when the fiends are demons who have taken possession of a human body. Even Pochita sacrificing himself to replace Denji's heart, can recall Migi replacing Izumi's heart in Parasyte. You talked about a leash, but Makima tying Denji's tie is a bit like her putting a leash on him. I was talking about a lot of blood and broken "things", with Aki (Hayakawa) and his altercation with Denji you see where I was going with this. Aki may never be able to have children now lol. Denji collecting magazines and wanting to touch breasts is pretty normal for a young man of 16/17 if I remember his age correctly. It's said a little later in the series, but it helps you understand Denji. Denji is a little wrong about Aki, he didn't put him with Power to get him fired, but after Denji tells him "that he never had friends and that if he could, he would be friends with a demon", so there you have it, Aki put Power on him to see if it was possible. Aki is rather stoic, but he is more sensitive than he shows, when Denji answers him that indeed he did not go to school, you see from his expression that he sympathizes and ends up explaining to him without asking for more. Power is cute and quite fun to follow. This season 1 made her my favorite character even though I didn't appreciate her more than that in the manga, which I can't wait for you to discover more about her. If Denji is a golden retriever, Power is more of a cat. You'll see it later, but the trio Denji, Aki and Power will remind you a lot of Yuji, Megumi and Nobara.

FlameyLynx

Power honestly reminds me of my cat. Like if a stray cat could speak when asking for food, it probably sound something like Power's "prostrate yourself, human" speech

I'm pretty sure you can easily find a Pochita plushie if you want one.

John J Ronald

Despite what the (initial) sub dialogue says, Pochita is like what Penny(RWBY) said "I won't be gone, I'll be part of you."...he lives on with Denji as his devil heart...because he wants to see Denji realize his dream.

John J Ronald

Makima is definitely the boss lady of the organization....beautiful, enigmatic and vaguely terrifying.

John J Ronald

I agree with the consensus, Power is a cat....same chaotic energy as a cat. Does what she wants, impulsively, doesn't give any effs.

John J Ronald

Aki doesn't understand what utter shit Denjis life was before meeting Miss Makima. He'll do anything to never go back to that; he was at death's door. Steady work Devil Hunting professionally is a positive step forward, there's no down side for Denji. Sorry about yer nuts, Aki, but you earned that in payback.

John J Ronald

Makima's also not above using her sexual charm to reinforce Denji's loyalty and obedience. She will always be the dominant (dominatrix?) partner in that relationship, however.

So, one thing that you need to remember is that Denji was literally torn into pieces prior to Pochita reviving him, and reattaching all his limbs. Pretty sure that qualifies as “dead.” Yes, Denji is getting treated like a dog - but he kind of likes it… also what exactly does it say about his previous existence that this is “heaven” by comparison for him? There isn’t much to say right now about Makima, but it’s interesting to note that she’s being very manipulative of Denji - in a way that he doesn’t mind - but I’m surprised you didn’t pick up on just how she’s stringing him along by promising him certain things if he’s a “good boy.” Literally, like when she says “if you’re good now, we can work together later” is about the same as offering your dog a treat. That’s how this relationship is going. Even in the intro he’s got his head in her lap and she’s stroking it like she’s holding a sleeping puppy. Side note: Rooster Teeth is about to do a Death Battle with this character in the next week or so, and, they deemed her an appropriate match for… Gojo. Take that for what you will. Hayakawa seems like the one playing the straight man. That is until he was done in by the Nut Devil. He’s also in charge of both Denji and Power. And Denji is actually being told to live in his house. Remember how Washington is always getting fed up with the Reds and Blues? Yeah, it’s kinda like that. Only these characters aren’t gonna be quite as clueless. I would describe the situation in the world as kind of similar to Jujutsu Kaisen - except everyone’s fairly aware of what’s going on instead. As for Denji’s “motivation,” it’s definitely instinctual on all fronts - you have to remember, he barely had food before this - and he had no time to branch out with anyone… so all these hormonal instincts of a repressed teenager are being let loose at once after being bottled up for years. It’s enough to drive any guy crazy, even if he really means well, deep down. But at the same time… there are worse things to be after than something like that… right? Just make sure you get permission first! 😅 We’ve already heard of a Nut Devil we don’t need a… nope I’m not gonna say it. It’s more effective that way. 😳

kamenriderhime

Awwww there are some similarities to Penny there, another reason to love Pochita! Now I've gotta get a plush!

kamenriderhime

Good way to sum her up! And good to know, I sort of wasn't expecting the story to go there but it's interesting to watch!

kamenriderhime

Oh good call, definitely dead then lol. I know right, his old existence was so awful! Oh yeah, she's totally training him like a dog with treats! WHOA, what?! She must be OP if they put her up against Gojo!!!! Omg Hayakawa is totally Wash here isn't he lol. Good call, it does seem similar to JJK only everyone's aware. That's a great way to put it, he's purely instinctual at this point. He is a teenager who's led a pretty awful life up to this point, and like you said, it's not the worst thing as long as it's all above board / consensual I suppose! It's just a really switch from most protagonists we see in anime lol. Hahahaha oh dear lord, I'm not ready for any more devils of that variety hahaha!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Ooooh good to know about the door, thanks! Awwww yes I think you're right, there needs to be a Pochita with all the plushies in the background!!! Ohhhh yes you're so right, there are tons of similarities to Parasyte!!! I knew it felt familiar. Oh good call about the tie as well lol. Ooooohhh yeah the nut devil may have taken that opportunity away from Aki lol. Yeah I'd say Denji's "motivation" is pretty standard for his age lol. Ohhh so that's why Aki put Power with him! Oooh I can't wait to see more of her! Power's totally a cat, you're right! I can't wait to see more of the trio!!!

FlameyLynx

Idk why but I like the fact Aki seemed surprised when Denji said he didn't go to school. Like I don't think he was genuinely trying to insult Denji's upbringing and he just responded without thinking :(

Hello Melissa, I'm sorry that I answer so late but I was on the road a lot yesterday and today and had completely forgotten to write a comment. The first episode of CSM really got me completely hooked. The animation and music were fantastic and I could immediately sympathize with Denji and Pochita. Those two had to go through so much bad stuff. I would immediately agree to become Denji's girlfriend because he is just so adorable. Yes he has a very strange goal as a Shonen protagonist but that makes him in some way more relatable than other protagonists. The first impression I have of Makima was not a good one. She has a nature about her that I simply can't stand somehow. You don't know yet what her exact goal is and how strong she really is and that makes her a bit scary for me. Also, the way she treats Denji makes me a little uncomfortable considering that Denji is still a teenager (16 years old) and she is a grown woman. Aki, on the other hand, made a good first impression on me. He is first of all very handsome, probably very strong, can manage his household well and takes care of Denji and Power a bit. he is very good husband material. I can't say anything more specific about Power right now, since she's only been seen too briefly. I'm curious how you will find the further episodes.

Hey Bellana! No worries at all, hope your travels went well! I'm late responding too because I was busy this weekend with a craft fair, so no worries! I know, it's all really great stuff isn't it! I feel so bad for Denji and Pochita! He's adorable for sure, I can see the appeal! But yeah, his, erm, more down to earth goals do make him a bit more relatable! That's interesting about Makima, she's definitely mysterious but I hadn't even really put together that she's so much older than him! My bad!! That does make it a bit uncomfortable :/ Aki seems cool, I'm looking forward to seeing more of him! And I can't wait to see more of Power!!! I'm excited to see more :D
