Hey everyone!  I'm back with Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, episode 17!  Good lord!!!!  So much going on in this one!!!  Like for one thing, the fight scenes here were SO off the walls and intense!!!!  And who knew Megumi could produce something so fierce?!  The fact that Sukuna used his domain expansion says a lot!!!  And jeez, I don't think there's too much left of this area....it looked like there was a giant hole where Shibuya should be :O  And Sukuna switches out with Yuji just in time to see all the devastation that they caused, yikes.  Also, on some brighter notes, ponytail is officially gone and it looks like Nanami is back?!!?!!?  OMG!!!!  Great ep!  Can't wait for more!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

To quickly answer some questions: Sukuna said "it's almost time" because his control over Yuji's body was only temporary so Sukuna didn't surrender control of the body, he ran outta time "Malevolent Kitchen" and "Malevolent Shrine" are the same thing, but the most used translation, which was present in Season 1 was "Malevolent Shrine". But if you look into Sukuna's abilities and how he talks, you can see he talks alot about food. He's a foodie and a chef, it seems :D On Mahoraga's ability, the narrarator was saying that it adapted to the phenomena of being sliced rather than Sukuna's specific "Dismantle" attack, which is why "Cleave" was no longer working either and he had to burn it Awesome episode! Loved this reaction as always

Technical Alert before I forget: please check your cropping parameters for the OBS on this show. The subtitles, in particular, the ones displayed above the main area, are not visible. If you look at the first 1-2 minutes of the reaction that should be enough time to see where things are cutting off. So, I said at the end of the Chainsaw Man reactions that MAPPA currently had their hands full… whatever these animators are getting paid, it doesn’t seem like enough. This episode was 🔥. Literally. So as far as what Sukuna is after, he seems to have a keen interest in Fushiguro but we don’t know what specifically for yet. All we know is that something he has piqued the curse’s interest. To explain what Fushiguro actually did: he is capable of summoning the Shiloh am I he wants to control, but he must subjugate them first. On his own. If anyone else assists in this task, he cannot collect the shikigami he’s fighting even if he’s victorious. His tactic here was to summon Mahogora, a shikigami that no one has been able to beat (for obvious reasons) - and draw Shigemo into the ritual with him. He also knew he’d likely be killed, but figured Sukuna would intervene, which he did. Speaking of Sukuna, he’s just out here living his best life. Seems almost like he’s just happy he finally got something that would challenge him, because he seemed almost gleeful during the battle. He even got his own popcorn and soda for it. Dude, I’ve heard of styling on something, but this is ridiculous. He also mentioned that certain weapons would be dangerous against him if he was a cursed spirit, but he’s inside Yuji’s body, so that’s a benefit for him, as it resists those attacks. As far as his demeanor goes, he seems pretty calm. I kind of get Thrawn vibes in a way from him. Although they’re definitely different personalities - but it’s like, he’s seeing ten steps ahead all the time. The fight scene was epic, and two things, no three… occurred to me during it. One, Mahogora looks a lot like Hanami - two, what would Fushiguro be like if he could actually subjugate Mahogora - and three, Sukuna isn’t even at full strength yet. He’s still got more fingers to get. The school board’s concern over letting Yuji live last season is becoming more and more justified. We have hundreds to thousands of corpses (some even got sliced up in midair during this battle) and Shibuya is a giant hole in the ground. Then to top it all off, just as Yuji’s body is adapting to the number of fingers - Sukuna leaves him the parting gift of “while you were out, I did all this.” Which refers to the scene at the start, when he was being told to help people - but his body just slaughtered an entire city with no regard for its citizens. “Things are looking pretty bad, aren’t they?” Also we have half-crisp Nanami? What does it all mean!? Get more red string out, I’ve exhausted the ball we were using. 😅 And there are only six episodes left… 👀

Ohhhh ok thanks for clarifying that! You've gotta love that he's a foodie haha! Oh and thanks for clearing that up about the adapting too. I'm so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you!!!

Hey!! I'm on my way out to a craft fair right now - do I need to re-export this reaction or is it readable? It looked okay from what I saw when syncing it but if the subs are totally cut off/not readable at parts then I'll be sure to re-export and re-upload the file later! This episode really was fire and DANG, Mappa is on fire too! Right, he wants Fushiguro, we just don't know why. Ohhhhh ok cool, that makes way more sense to me know about how this all worked! Hahahah Sukuna really is just out here living his best life, popcorn and all! Ohhh interesting that Yuji's body is beneficial for him when it comes to things that would hurt a curse. I can see the Thrawn vibes for sure. Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the thing looked like Hanami! Exactly, this really went far in showing me Fushiguro's potential. And yeah, this isn't even fully powered Sukuna, like dang. I'm starting to see why the school was worried too. Half-baked Nanami, what the heck!!!! Only six eps, really?!?! Sheesh! I'll go grab the red string!!!

Manny

Oh gosh this was off the charts intense. Man what an episode. Just mayhem everything! Now I can’t tell but that was a lot of energy used. I’m so surprised Megumi gave him that much of a run for Sukuna’s money. I feel like he retreated but I’m not quite sure. Oof that was exhaustingly awesome. I’m so happy to see Nanami again but he’s seen better days. I hope he’s okay. I can’t take this anymore more. Just too much intensity for me to take 😵‍💫 💓

99% of the subs are readable, it’s just in the current cropping format the 1% of dialogue CR chooses to display at the TOP, and not the bottom of the screen can’t be seen. For this particular reaction: not a HUGE problem, but it should be adjusted before the next episode gets recorded. :)

Hi Hime :) With the appearance of Mahoraga, we understand better why Sukuna and Toji are interested in Megumi, since if Mahoraga can face Sukuna with 15 fingers and also adapt to his technique, that makes him a threat of Gojo's level. For the end, yes Yuji was starting to adapt, Sukuna felt it and let it overwhelm just to traumatize Yuji. It's Sukuna after all. But this final scene is precisely the scene that was shown on the networks where Junya Enoki, Yuji's VA, seemed to have a breakdown while recording the scene. We can understand why and in the end, he did a great job. Nanami is alive...for now. Because he's still in a severe state and if Shoko doesn't treat him with her cursed energy reversal technique, I don't know if Nanami will still be there for several episodes. Which would really hurt me, because as I said at the end of season 1, I have two favorite characters in the show and strangely they both have N.K for initials, Nanami Kento and Nobara Kugisaki.

kamenriderhime

Ok great, thanks for letting me know! I'll double check my settings next time! I think it's actually the program I use to compress/convert the file that's doing it!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) That's so true, now we know why they're so interested! Gotcha, thanks for clarifying about Yuji adapting! Someone sent me the video of the VA breaking down, WOW!!!! So emotional!!! He killed it for sure! YAY Nanami!!! But yeah, he didn't look good at all! I hope he can get to Shoko! Awww he's such a good one to have as one of your faves! So is Nobara!!! So funny about the initials!!!

This episode was absolutely insane & shocking in some great ways and in some terrible ways but I loved all of it. Before I get into the episode I want to say something forgot in the comment I left for the last episode. I can understand why some people might be disappointed with Toji dying even if I thought it was great writing. And that’s because him being in the story brings up a lot of interesting possibilities and that might have been a great way to go but with how the séance power was written to work with how this turn of events ended up it makes sense. Also for the record I think your villain impression was great LOL. On your comment about things being unpredictable sometimes it’s great when stories or at least it doesn’t make a story bad if things are predictable but I also love when things are unpredictable. That 1st shot of Yuji remembering his grandfathers last wish/hope transitioning to Sukuna in the same pose surrounded by destruction is rather chilling with how it sets up/foreshadows Yuji’s breakdown. I love getting a in-depth explanation of Megumi’s technique with details about the subjugation. Using something he can’t control as a sort of force of nature to defeat an enemy is smart, crazy and awesome. I like having another example of explaining your power to make it stronger with Megumi going through the trouble of explaining specifics. I love the dawning horror/realization on blonde’s (I refuse to call this guy by his name he is just pathetic & I find that to be good writing) face when the ritual starts. I love how this is accompanied by the flashback with Gojo talking about the past of the powers they have & some clan history. It’s an interesting way to show how high Fushiguro’s potential as a sorcerer is. Also it shows how kind of crazy he is since he was going to use it against Todo in season one during their fight before it was interrupted without much provocation. I love the imagery of the animals appearing as Mahoraga is unleashed. Also Mahoraga’s design is wild and suitably inhuman considering what was to come. Even if I very much dislike blonde his power is really interesting & cool especially the memory loss aspect. I think it’s great to see Sukuna’s intelligence as a villain when he’s able to figure out that Megumi is going to die if he doesn’t defeat Mahoraga himself. It’s interesting that when Sukuna 1st became interested in Megumi it seemed to be because he was interested in his potential/strength but now it sounds like Sukuna is factoring Megumi into the plans/preparations he has going on with this Uraume which is also ominous. Even if Mahoraga wasn’t able to win in the end it’s awesome, intense as well as scary to see something on or close to the same level of power as Sukuna. And I love how the animation goes crazy to reflect the power/speed at play here. Sukuna’s backflips look so good man I love it. And I think the show does a great job of showing how much closer Sukuna & Mahoraga are in terms of strength with Sukuna having to try harder and taking hits. I love the way this battle develops/constantly escalates like going from throwing cars and destroying parts of buildings/1 building to throttling buildings & destroying city blocks because that’s usually a great way to structure a fight. And then we start to see all the death all of this destruction starts to cause once Sukuna realizes simple attacks aren’t going to cut it against this thing because he doesn’t understand it’s powers yet. Also him growing another mouth on his neck to break the sword was disturbing but awesome. It was horrifying to see them just killing people once they reach the areas that still have people around I think the 1st really chilling moment was all those people falling from the roof of a building. I love when the music starts to speed up and become more intense once Sukuna actually starts to get serious. I can understand that this fight is hard to follow at times but I think it being so fast-paced & chaotic must have been how it was in the manga and the animators most likely were doing their best to pay respect to that. I’m hoping at least some of the civilians were saved by Inumaki because it looked like he was definitely sensing the power those 2 were displaying. If that is the case because he had to do it quickly it probably wasn’t a lot of people but I hope he saved as many as he could. The red and black flashing/colors the 1st time Sukuna uses rapid fire slashes really impressed me & the episode just continued to do so. I love the movements of the characters and objects & I am not the most well versed in animation but I think the animators more loosely modeling things which can make paused shots look not as good but makes the motion more fluid and greater. I have to say I was not ready for a lot in this episode but Sukuna peeling a train car like a orange was wild. I didn’t realize fully while 1st watching that Mahoraga was getting huge while trying to crush Sukuna with more train but once you do it’s insane. Also around then is when Sukuna has a look on his face we have not seen before & it’s either shock that this thing can perceive and to some extent understand his technique or fear of some kind I have to say that look being either emotion is interesting since it’s not something normal or expected from him. Sukuna just laughing as he is killing people is chilling especially seeing the monstrous joy/glee on his face realizing that he is facing something/someone strong enough to see his technique/challenge him. The way he is bowing/as you said reveling in everything as rubble is falling around him & he is turning the rubble into nothing is a perfect moment for his character. I like his intelligence on display as he figures out what’s up with Mahoraga by doing something to it that he knows it shouldn’t survive to know about its adaptability. Also I like the way the metal/water Mahoraga blasts away from itself looks as it falls apart. Cool detail when Mahoragra is under the water it grows bills to adapt. Here is where Sukuna mentions this things similarity to Yamata no Orochi which is from Japanese mythology so Sukuna just casually dropped that a mythological Dragon existed/possibly exists as a curse. The rainbow color as Mahoraga changes its form/heals itself is cool. I love the animation as Sukuna throws who knows how many slashes/attacks at Mahoraga especially the black/white impacts representing Sukuna destroying concrete and steel it’s amazing and downright experimental at points the red lighting/color in the background is beautiful in a horrifying way. Oh yeah you said they were destroying the city earlier when it was not so bad and I was like oh boy… It gets worse. Also absolute adaptability is insanely powerful & useful it’s no wonder Sukuna was interested in Megumi seeing all this. I love the moments of transitioning between Mahoraga’s image/shots of him and Mahoraga it’s just really amazing presentation. And then we get to Sukuna having to use his domain to win. I love how the music was slowly getting darker as the battle went on but as soon as Malevolent Shrine is unleashed the song changes to something even darker in tone. I love how there are black scribbles covering his face as he forms the hand sign for his domain. It’s really sad to see some girls who I think were seen in an earlier episode talking about how they are finally safe just as a giant explosion goes off & so many die instantly. The animation of all these slashes going off all around Sukuna as well as Mahoraga constantly being destroyed & reforming is beautiful and all around awesome. It’s great to get a more thorough explanation of Sukuna’s techniques/domain and he’s got it all covered power check, versatility being able to attack anything with cursed energy which is a lot and another power to attack anything else and you would think that’s enough but there’s more with the range pact which is an insane area everything is covered. Also the divine feat moment with how he controls his domain is both terrifying & badass. I don’t know why but I find it funny that Sukuna makes himself weaker to protect Megumi by making his range less. I think the show does a great at showing the scale of the description here by showing the areas being destroyed as well as many different cities of Japan showing how this event can be seen from so far away it’s that cataclysmic. We are witnessing a cataclysm in real time and it is horrifying. I don’t think the entire city was destroyed just a lot of it the only way you survive is being far enough away or as I have seen people saying underground. You know what’s darkly funny I think blonde died because he tried to run away and wasn’t close enough to Megumi to be in the safe zone. Also in a weird way Nanami was the one who killed blonde as the one who exhausted his miracles good riddance honestly. What Sukuna does to Yuji here is so cruel and fucked up I mean it’s great as more establishment for Sukuna as a villain but the trauma & PTSD it’s going to cause for Yuji is immense. Also yeah Yuji was regaining control of his body Sukuna just wanted to bring him to the sight of this massacre/disaster to be evil. Yuji’s breakdown here is sad as hell & has such great voice acting it’s hard to watch but captivating as a character moment. I’m happy someone shared the voice actor losing it since I had not seen it yet it’s very impressive. And having the breakdown happen while showing shots of all the death/destruction is haunting. The thing is something like this was bound to happen with how there isn’t really a good ending for him at this point in terms of the story & in his mind since the plan is to get all the fingers and then die/the killed by assumedly Gojo and Yuji probably feels this way even more after this giving us some suicidal tendency just to make things darker. He can’t imagine a life past absorbing the fingers & die and at this point there is nothing in the story telling us that there could be a possibility of a life after this we can only hope that something will come up that makes a possibility like that possible. Some people complained that the opening song playing here didn’t fit the moment/undercut his emotions but the thing is that’s the point because it’s been confirmed that the song was written from the perspective of a cursed spirit and in this specific moment from Sukuna’s perspective just laughing at Yuji’s hopes/determination to save/protect people & his despair here. Let me know if you want to hear about the translators lyrics that show this. Also obviously he’s not a murderer but he sure as hell feels like one having all those memories & his own body having been used as the instrument of this bloodbath. This is not a Naruto situation Yuji & Sukuna will never be friends let alone ever work together it’s not that type of show. I love and hate the drawing/animation of him at the end of the episode being very rough/sketchy. The thing about this moment is that its really interesting to do this to your main character and I think it will lead to really great stuff for his character in the future. Seeing Kento in that horrible state at the end is rough and yeah if it doesn’t get help soon I am relatively sure he’s most likely gonna die. Also the details on those injuries is disturbing to look at. At least this means Maki is probably alive even if she’s badly injured. Fun or not so fun fact 1 of the animators working on the destruction could not find the floor plan 1 of the buildings so they made it 1 of Mappa’s buildings as a subtle way to stick it to the company without the possibility of getting in trouble. Really shows how bad things are at that company and how much the animators hate them. Praise the animators as much as possible because the more that comes out about the company the worse it seems to be. Sukuna was having the time of his life this episode I agree. Getting a snack & drink shows that LOL. I think it’s great that you can experience the episode again while editing it sounds fun. I don’t blame you for having your jaw dropped a lot in this reaction it’s what an episode like this will do to you. Oh yeah you saying poor Shibuya made me think of a joke I have been seeing around of people saying what did Shibuya do to you(Sukuna) LOL. I did not have any predictions about what was going to happen next after this episode because so much crazy stuff was happening. I have now seen the next episode and even realizing I was not ready & preparing myself I was still not ready. Finally apparently I don’t know how much but this episode wasn’t as finished/polished as the animators wanted and it still ended up almost looking like a movie it’s impressive/incredible. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

kamenriderhime

Yeah, this was a really intense episode! It was really unsettling. It's amazing that the episode looked so good despite not being at the level that the animators wanted! I can't imagine what it would have looked like fully-realized!
