Hey everyone!  Here I am with the sixth ep of Oshi no Ko!!!!  OMG........you guys, this one was too real!!!!  Poor Akane :(  She was trying so hard, and to have it all blow up in her face like this was brutal!  The amount of overwhelm that comes from the constant flow of hate on social media in a situation like this was just exhausting and devastating to watch.  I really, really thought that was it you guys!!!  I'm SO glad Aqua was there, omg!!!!!!!!  They did a great job of capturing the emotion of this situation but MAN, I was wrecked after this one!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

When you see the reaction time is longer than one of your average JoJo reactions, I feel pretty safe saying we hit a nerve. 😅 The warning at the beginning of the episode did not originally get put there, I imagine it was added after some people requested that a trigger warning be issued. As for the information put at the end of the episode, it didn’t exist in the initial broadcast either, the person in charge of doing the English translation felt it would be prudent given the content. On a lighter note, if you’re not sure which episode you’re watching, it should be fairly obvious that the show always starts with the theme. If it’s the Japanese phonetic lyrics, you’re watching an even numbered episode, if the lyrics are translated to English, you’re watching an odd numbered episode. The scene of Yuki wanting to quit at the beginning of the episode kind of shows just how much entertainment is able to manipulate the viewer. She’s using a degree of her own personal feelings to, as she put it… exaggerate for better ratings. Entertainment in most forms is, in fact, just a heightened sense of reality for most viewers. Akane is a diligent worker, and the scene where she’s grilling for everyone else despite being a vegetarian herself, kind of puts into perspective what kind of person she is. Note the foreshadowing piece of advice: “your options depend on how much of a risk you can handle.” Ruby thinks Aqua’s enjoying spending time with pretty girls - the ironic thing is, he’s more happy about not having to worry about the kind of food he has to eat. A few in the cast are using it to show acting skills, but most just want to leave a good impression for future gigs. Reality shows do show sone true aspects of a person’s identity, but there’s definitely a guard up… in most circumstances. The first pressure Akane starts getting is from the person who is in charge of her manager - and while he’s getting chewed out, neither was aware she was listening to the whole exchange. So that’s the first sign something is going downhill. Kana in the meantime has to school Ruby about badmouthing products. Just because you’re a Pepsi person doesn’t mean Coke might not want you to do something for them - but they absolutely won’t if you badmouth them of your own volition. The title of this episode is “ego surfing,” and as Kana says, all performers do it. It’s instant feedback, gratification, criticism, and also helps them decide on their adjustments. Recall how Ai made adjustments to how her smile looked after reading a positive tweet about a concert she had just finished. “Fans and the content they consume are in a state of mutual surveillance. We can’t forget that if you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you.” I believe putting these two quotes together the point being made is, it’s overall a good thing to want to know what your fans think of you. As long as you take it under advisement, and in moderation. Aqua says probably the most damning line when he notices Akane trying to hit on Nobu: “I almost forgot she was on the show.” If her co stars barely are noticing her, what does that say to what’s being put out to broadcast? Also the reason she decided to become more aggressive was because the director gave her a suggestion to become “the bad girl.” The biggest problem Akane has is that on a television show, people expect you to project. Yuki might have less experience, but she’s picked up the triggers to get the attention.m, while Akane is letting her real persona out, the problem is, it’s not something that draws a lot of attention. The scene with the fingernail scratch is obviously the trigger for everything that follows, but it’s treated pretty much like just an on the set accident. The thing is, both parties make up even before anything is shown… which is why the following events hit as hard as they do. Of course, people feel they have the right to say whatever they want, and you know there’s going to be emotional responses to something like that without the context. What makes matters worse, is Akane takes the time to apologize on social media, and it literally just makes people feel that more justified in trashing her. And the thing is, she’s reading most of it, if not all of it. As Mem-Cho explains, “when it comes to flaming, the more earnest the target is, the more they’re hurt by it.” And what’s happening to Akane on a mental scale is exactly that. I think while her mother notices something is a little off because of her demeanor, she lacks the instinct to pry a little deeper - and it just keeps piling on… not just online, but work, and school as well… and the dark side of the internet is “I can say whatever I want, because I’m never going to interact with this person,” not even bothering to think how it might affect someone’s feelings. This is why a lot of internet personas don’t respond to everything. Im sure your Patreon people are usually pretty thoughtful and nice, but don’t tell me you’ve never seen a YT comment that wasn’t worth the time spent reading it. Some people think an internet connection justifies whatever they think. In Akane’s case a few seconds became her rep. I can think of a couple examples of this - you’ve constantly railed at Palpatine in Star Wars reactions, but I can’t see you ever saying “I despise the Ian McDiarmid because of the character he plays that I hate.” I heard about this after the fact, but the actor for the character of Geoffrey in GoT got a lot of death threats because everyone hated the character so much. And yet he’s doing a role - everything I saw from behind the scenes from any of the production crew said they all loved working with him while he was on set. Sometimes the line between truth and fiction get too blurred. Even her manager tells her not to tweet anything because it just adds fuel to the fire. Her world’s getting razed to the ground, and nobody even bothers to ask if she’s okay. The two comments that put her over the edge were one saying “I can’t support her anymore” and one that says “Just die,” which fittingly, is given by an anonymous user: we hide behind screen names so our behavior doesn’t get policed. I think this might have been one of the oversights if the internet, allowing people to hide behind any Alia’s they want. The thing is nobody would probably dare say this directly to her face: and the thing is, though - she was reading all of the comments. Even the harsh ones. No wonder her mental fortitude took the beating it did. The last scene has several layers to it: obviously the context of an actress who can’t take anymore jumping off a bridge, but think about this - Aqua saves her from falling from a height that actually killed him in his previous life. And he also says the one thing to her that nobody actually told her out loud during all of this: “I’m not your enemy.” At this point she had gotten to the point where she thought nobody cared what happened to her. This is where Aqua’s powers of observation probably came in handy. Akane spent the majority of the episode wanting to leave a mark… well, consider the mark left and then some. I have another episode to get to, but I think that this is one of the most well-crafted episodes in the show, or any show. In fact, the reason it hits do hard is it knows what it’s doing. I honestly wish more people would at least see this one particular episode, because then, maybe people would think a little harder about what they thought was appropriate to push the SEND Button on. You could probably write a thesis just on this 24 minute episode. I think I already did an essay, so I’m good. Let’s flip the page. I got another forty minutes to write about tonight. 😅 PS besides the fact: Akane’s VA is another seiyuu who is no stranger to filling a big part right off the bat, as her first major role was the lead in Fruits Basket. She’s also starred in lead roles this year from “The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten,” and “The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady,” which finished #1 and #3 on the Winter 2023 list in addition to the role here. So in case you need a chalkboard, Ruby’s seiyuu is doing this as her first role, Akane’s first role was Fruits Basket, and Kana got her breakthrough with Gon.

So, in the vein of Art Imitating Life Imitating Art.....this episode in particular raised some controversy in Japan because it mirrors in some detail a real minor idol celebrity suicide and the mother of the survivor expressed her displeasure at seeing her daughter's life being mined for material....and was immediately attacked on line by rabid fans of the manga & anime of Oshi No Ko! Add to this the fact that when the English Dub was released, rabid Oshi No Ko (Jp. Subtitled) fans viciously attacked the performance of Kristen McGuire (Akane) and her fellow cast members (like Natalie Rial {Kana}, et. al.) rallied to her defense and chided fans for ignoring the moral of the show and this episode itself! It was ugly and bizarre and played out all over Twitter at the time. It's not uncommon for some anime fans to bash the English dub; it's ignorant but it happens....but it's disgusting they made it so PERSONAL, for THIS particular episode....the irony is bitter indeed.

Wow. I was not expecting something like this. I’m just going to the comments and soaking all the information in. It’s a tough subject but one that needs to be told as a reminder. Very heartbreaking stuff.

Whoaaaa....that's intense! And it's horribly ironic that the idol's mother was attacked online by fans....like do they know what even is the point they're trying to make on the show here?! What a mess. And that's so sad about how the dub actors were attacked. Dub VAs take so much crap anyway, but yeah, for this particular episode is incredibly ironic. Wow!!!!!

Kristen McGuire is also a budding comic book artist herself and drew her character for Xmas recently. https://twitter.com/KrisComics/status/1724858024903512424

Hahah you know we're in some steep territory when the length of a reaction rivals the length of a Jojo reaction :P That's interesting about the warnings before and after the episode. Ohhhh good call about the lyrics being the key to which one I'm watching!!! Fair point too about the exaggerated reality of entertainment and that being such a great "hook". Akane really shows the kind of person she is in that grilling scene huh. Lol isn't it funny how Ruby is perceiving this compared to how it really is. The pressure on Akane's manager is a good example of the phrase "crap rolls downhill" unfortunately lol. Yeah the product bashing thing should be obvious in a world of sponsorships!! I just edited the part where Ai does "egosurfing"!!! Great point that being aware of how you're being perceived is good in moderation. Oof, that line about forgetting Akane was in the show, coming from a costar, really does sting! The scratch incident is just so unfortunate! The whole thing is made into something it's not and poor Akane is subjecting herself to every reaction to it. I think this is the exact reason why a lot of creators get out of touch with their comments section - it's so easy to just fill up an entire section with hate (I see this on TikTok a LOT, like way more than YouTube). OMG, I could tell you some stories about the YT comments haha, but even there folks are relatively really decent!!! (I don't think I'm attracting enough attention to really get the full flames and I'm fine with that haha.) Oh that's so true about how actors get actual hate for the roles they've played! That's sad about Geoffrey's actor, he was just a kid at the time too! Yeah I could never hate on actual Ian McDiarmid for Palpatine!!! Such a great point that the worst comments are from "anonymous" users in this scene - like people can just be as hateful as they want with no consequences. OMG that's so true that falling from a height like that killed Aqua previously!!!! I didn't even think of that. All it took was one act of caring. I know, everyone needs to see this ep and internalize it before they even get an internet connection! Hahahaha between the two of us I think we developed a whole course curriculum just for this ep :P No kidding about Akane's VA, wow! And this is Ruby's VA's first role, what a variety in casting. OMG Kana is Gon, I just love that!!!!!
